UNC Pembroke - My Buddy's Recruitment
I've mentioned in a few places before that I have a friend at UNC Pembroke who is a non-traditional student (Married, over 30, with children) who was interested in pursuing membership in an NPC sorority.
Informal recruitment started there this past Tuesday and was nearly rained out because of the floods. There are two NPC houses on the Pembroke campus, and I'll just call them Josephine and Daphne, from the movie "Some Like It Hot". FIRST NIGHT Josephine This is the chapter my friend really wanted from the beginning. She was impressed with the national organization, and she'd met members throughout her time at Pembroke. We also have an old friend from high school who pledged Josephine her first year at College, and she had great memories of her time as a collegian. She thought she made some good connections with the Josephines. She was going to register for formal recruitment last spring but missed the deadline. Going into the process, Josephine was her favorite, but I told her to be sure to keep an open mind. She approached a couple of Josephine members the day of Informal recruitment and she was disappointed to find that they were kind of closed off to her. She didn't let that deter her, however, and she went to their first event, a pool party (that was rained out). She said that whatever connection she felt with them last year wasn't really there, and while she really respected the organization as a whole, she didn't feel as if she was among her future "sisters". Daphne My friend really liked the members of this organization that she knew from classes and around campus, but leading up to IR she wasn't completely sold on the sisterhood. The philanthropy matches very well with her area of study and future career, so she respected the work they did in that area. She went to their event (another rained out pool party) and she said from the moment she walked in the room, they made her feel at home. She said they're a very "huggy" chapter, and she liked that the members ranged the spectrum from stereotypical sorority girl to more mature sisters who, like her, returned to school after taking time out for their families. She felt so at home here that she completely changed her mind on who was her favorite - now the Daphnes had pulled ahead! SECOND NIGHT My friend decided not to go back to Josephine. I couldn't believe it! Daphne The sisters were supposed to go skating, but (again) the event was rained out. Instead they made cards and did crafts in support of their philanthropy, and my friend said that even if Daphne didn't give her a bid, she would always feel connected to the women in this chapter. She knew that by the time they sang their closing song that she had found her home -- she only hoped that they felt the same way! THIS MORNING - BIDS DAY Bids were posted at 9:00 am, but my friend was in class until 10. The president of the Daphnes was in her class and asked her if she'd gone up to see the bids yet, but when my friend answered no, she tried to cover her tracks. ;) On her way to the student union, she ran into another one of the Daphnes who walked with her to the student union. If that wasn't a dead giveaway, I don't know what is. Now my friend is a proud member of..... Wait for it........ SIGMA SIGMA SIGMA! I'm so happy for her I almost screamed - but she called me at work, so I couldn't. Congratulations to my friend, and congratulations to TRI SIGMA on getting such a fantastic new member -- who already has three little legacies! ETA: Tri-Sigma took 5 new members during Informal Recruitment. The Josephines took 2, both of whom were legacies. |
How cool! Congratulations to your friend and Tri-Sigma! :D

Congratulations to your friend and to Sigma Sigma Sigma. As I mentioned recently in another thread, a couple of Sigma Sigma Sigmas in letters are pictured in the three-page special article on UNC-Pembroke in the brand new 2005 edition of U. S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges. So your friend should have some sisters who are in the limelight, so to speak. :)
Congrats to her and Tri-Sigma!!!! That was an awesome story and I'm so glad that it had an awesome ending!!!
Ex-Lurker, would you happen to know if that issue is available online?

Maybe someone else has better information about accessing the issue. When I clicked my way through the magazine's site, I was able to find a reference to the article on UNC Pembroke, but the link only showed the text of the first page. To get the whole article, looks like you have to pay or else buy the print issue. Sorry. The basic address is http://www.usnews.com and then you can click on the picture of the bright orange cover of the newest "Best Colleges" paperback. It has info about the free online edition and the premium online edition. |
Thanks so much, exlurker. :)
Are you close enough to her geographically to go to her Initiation? I think that would be so cool, to see a close friend be Initiated (who was a friend before the sorority came along).
What a great ending! Congrats to your friend and Sigma Sigma Sigma!
Congratulations to your friend and Sigma Sigma Sigma.:)
Best part about this--- FREE BABYSITTING :) You can't charge a sister to keep her kid.
UNC P is definetly the place for non traditional sisters. My sorority sister's real sister was in the other group years ago. |

This is FREAKING cool news!
I got an e-mail from my buddy today telling me that she's going to be profiled in an upcoming issue of Tri-Sigma's national magazine! And I had a hand in it!
See, after she got her bid, I sent an e-mail to Sigma Sigma Sigma's national HQ praising the women at UNC-Pembroke for taking such a progressive stance toward membership recruitment and accepting my friend as a new member. I basically sang all of my friend's praises, even mentioning that she was the first person to even mention sorority life to me W-A-Y back when we were in high school together. Little did I know that my little interfraternal pat on the back would result in such a fantastic outcome! Someone from Sigma's HQ wrote back and thanked me for my letter, and today I got an e-mail from T. saying that HQ called their chapter president and asked how they might get in touch with T. because they wanted to profile her for the Triangle! I'm not sure when the issue will come out, but what a fantastic honor for my friend. Thank you again Tri Sigma for making her dreams come true! ETA: I have an image in my head of the photo she'll want to use: she'll be in a Tri-Sigma sweatshirt, her husband will be in a Phi Delt sweatshirt, and their daughters will be dressed in purple and/or clothes with sailboats all over them. :D |
That is such a fun story!

That is awesome! I'm impressed you took the time to email HQ to compliment the chapter! We should all do more of that!
Folx, my sister wrote a bomb letter to Sigma Sigma Sigma! Trust me!
congrats to your friend and welcome to Tri Sigma!!!! our national org is so AWESOME! it becomes so inspirational and easy to live up to your ideals when there is such great evidence that your national does as well!!! I'm so glad that she has found a home and I'll be on the lookout for the new triangle!!!

My friend Tracy was initiated last night! She'll probably call me at work today to give me the highlights. It's been kind of a stressful time for her, but she's SO happy to be a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma. :)
Congrats to Tracy! :)
Congratulations to your friend on her initiation!
this really is a great story. This, to me, is how recruitment should work.
enjoy it all, tracy, congrats
Wow! I can't wait to see the article she is featured in! That is so cool. I am so happy for your friend. It seems like everything has worked out for her well.:D
She's in the most recent issue of the Triangle, see page 9:

Great article!
Congratulations again to Tracy and the wonderful sisters of Tri-Sigma ~ truly an awsome story and testament to your sisterhood!!
That article just put warm fuzzies into my heart.
Go Tri-Sig!!!! For stepping outside the box and taking a non-traditional student as a sister. More power to them!!!! |
Great Article.
Question for you Tri-Sigma's (or anyone) on a different subject. There's a story at the end of the magazine about a book "Quarterlife Crises......" by a woman named Alexandra Robbins. Is that the same woman???? |
