Places that Smell

This is a spin-off of the clearance store thread, but does anyone else notice that there are certain stores that just smell bad. Big Lots is one of them. I can't go in there b/c it smells SO BAD. There is a VONS grocery store by me that is the same way.

Does anyone else have stores that they refuse to frequent b/c of the smells?

PoohsHoneyBee 09-07-2004 03:43 PM

i can't go into places or sections of the stores that sell tires, it makes my head hurt

Kevin 09-07-2004 03:44 PM

There are also entire towns. The Mexican side of El Paso was a stinky place.

As far as stores, I can't think of any.

ZTAngel 09-07-2004 03:46 PM

It doesn't smell bad but has anyone else noticed that Abercrombie has a unique scent to it? All the stores have the same scent to it. When I use to work there, I would come home with the "smell" all over me to the point where even my house would smell like it if I didn't wash my work clothes right away.

The JC Penney's in Monroeville Mall is stinky. Other Penney's stores are fine.

Taualumna 09-07-2004 05:08 PM

Chinese herbal stores smell funky.

cutiepatootie 09-07-2004 05:09 PM

Ross always has a funky smell.

I also can't stand walking into the home and garden sections of any store. The smell of fertilizer makes me nauseous.

bruinaphi 09-07-2004 05:34 PM

We have a Ross by my office that never smells bad and has great stuff! I agree that many of them smell awful though!

Sistermadly 09-07-2004 05:35 PM

Old Navy. Whenever I buy clothes there, I have to wash them first to get the stink off 'em.

Co-Sign... I love the gardening sections.. but I feel the neet to hold my breath and plug my nose while browsing :p

GeekyPenguin 09-07-2004 06:06 PM

The Penney's at the mall I work at REEKS and has reeked forever, particularily upstairs. It's awful.

Jill1228 09-08-2004 04:00 AM

Thrift stores have that smell! Ewwww! And I love checking out the thrift stores...

PhiPsiRuss 09-08-2004 09:28 AM

Staten Island and New Jersey.

A lot of the stores at the Regency Square Mall here are stinky. i think that it has a lot to do with the condition of the building.

i HATE walking close behind strange people in the mall. i do not want to smell them.
downtown near the river, the Maxwell house factory, and power plant. nasty!!!

LOL - I did one of my best short stories in creative writing classes on throwing up in a tire store!

I hate driving through Gary, IN in the summer (and I hope I didn't offend anyone), or any other steel city. Blech, the sulfur!

GeekyPenguin 09-08-2004 10:09 PM

There's never a good time to drive through Gary.

Yah- it almost smells as bad as Oklahoma City.

Smelliest city in Iowa: Cedar Rapids. Quaker pollution smells like Alpo.

Peaches-n-Cream 09-08-2004 10:31 PM

The subway smells like urine. The streets smell like garbage when it gets hot.

I think Clinton is giving Cedar Rapids a run for it's money.

There is nothing like the Aroma of Tacoma.......

Of the Kent/Auburn Valley (dairy farms) on a nice summer day.....:p

winnieb 09-08-2004 11:48 PM

I think all of JcPenneys stores stink, some are worse than others.

IowaStatePhiPsi 09-09-2004 12:05 AM

worst smelling department store I've been in would have to be the K-Mart in Webster City, Iowa. I stopped in to use the bathroom and get a bottle of pop will I was driving and thought I was going to die in there.

valkyrie 09-09-2004 11:12 AM

Commerce City, Colorado is the Gary of the west.

Pulp mills are AWFUL.

Dairy farm are gross, but the worst is pig farms. Nothing is worse than that.

There is some factory in The Dalles, and I think it is mothballs or something. When an oinion truck from Walla Walla turns over on the highway that isn't too pleasant either.

Ginger 09-09-2004 12:17 PM

Kaukauna, WI
decent enough small town, but stinks.

We went into a Jewel/Osco the other day to buy approximately 1 million 12 packs of soda since they were on sale, and I had to leave and go outside. It smelled like mold. I don't think I'm ever going into a Jewel/Osco again.

Driving from NYC to Virginia Beach we passed a pig farm. You are correct. It was the worst smell ever. Even worse than the subway or the streets with garbage or Flushing Bay or Newtown Creek on a broiling hot day, and those places stink! I blocked it out of my memory because it stunk so bad for miles. It wasn't just a bad stink for a few seconds. It lasted for about half an hour. Ewwww!

We have a bunch of Jewel/Oscos around here and they all smell fine...at least the ones I go to.

I can't believe no one has mentioned sewage treatment plants! There's a huge one right off the Stevenson (I-55) as you go into Chicago, right around Hodgkins. Even if you have the windows rolled up you can still smell it...you have to breathe through your mouth when you pass by. ICK.

Ha Ha. I also call that place the purgatory they send you to hen you miss your UPS package.

The real stinker of Colorado is Greeley. My parents moved there after I graduated from college and I hate going up there. Apparently you get used to stinky. I'll say "Wow, it really smells out there today" and my mom will reply "Gee, I don't even notice anymore." That saddens me.
