Racist and/or Anti-semitic brothers/sisters

I never had any brothers that I knew that were like this.

Did anyone else have any ignorant brothers or sisters like this? I have heard of a fellow or two on Greekchat.com even.

Who are they and how have you dealt with them? They do reflect upon your fraternity/sorority and your letters.

RACooper 09-06-2004 11:42 PM

Unfortunately yes...

Sometimes a character flaw, no matter how twisted, can be hidden pretty deep...

Some "ex-Brother's" attitudes became apparent over the year, and finally culminated with them being called on it... their reaction, by resorting to racial slurs and worse led to the expulsion of said people.

Taualumna 09-06-2004 11:50 PM

Question: Would you call someone from a small town who may never have met people from group X racist? Or, would you call that person "underexposed"? I know a girl who said that she has "only met two Jews". I don't think I'd call her anti-semetic by saying that. She just doesn't come from a town with lots of Jewish people. An administrative assistant at my graduate program said that I should wear red if I marry, rather than white (we were talking about weddings). That's because red is the traditional colour for celebration in China. What she doesn't realize is that it is Chinese brides today tend to wear a western style gown to the ceremony. And this goes in China (at least in major cities) too. That woman is just "underexposed". I wouldn't call her racist.

Uhm no neither of those comments are racist or anti-semitic. The first is not even ignorant - it's the truth. She's only met 2. There is nothing wrong with this. And the second might be ignorant but hateful and racist it sounds not.

The best comment from one of my Brothers: "I dont understand why asians are always going places is small groups" as we drove past a few groups of international students walking from campus to the University Village housing area. The funny part is that he's a Vietnamese-American.

It seems that in our chapter the majority of comments that could be taken as bordering racist are actually built off of their level of interaction with a certain racial/ethnic group. One guy didnt want to try making recruitment calls to guys from a particular part of the US because "I think they'd rather join an LGLO". Turns out he hasnt had much interaction with Puerto Ricans, so he and I talked about that.

Rio_Kohitsuji 09-07-2004 09:19 AM

Oh of course. Around this area it's kind of expected. *shrugs*

Maybe not in your chapter, but you do. We all do. Its not possible to have a GLO with tens of thousands of members without some who are bigoted.

I dealt with it as an undergraduate by admonishing those who made bigoted statements. I caught flack on occasion, but we moved forward.

Perhaps, but my statement was about brothers that I knew.

Maybe he "doesn't understand" because he is Asian-American, and he meant Asian "FOBs" (immigrants)? Just a thought.

ETA: Sometimes those born here don't quite understand immigrants who are their age.

Imperial1 09-07-2004 12:30 PM

Due to the fact that I will be accused of pulling the "race-card" and possibly make people mad by true comments, I will not make any comment concerning the topic of this thread in this thread.

There is even a moderator who harasses people on Greekchat that has posted remarks that are both racist and anti-semitic.

However, in this case several of his brothers as well as moderators in other fraternities and sororities have told him it was unacceptable.

Ironic coming from one who makes it a habit of insulting others based on country, religion, culture, or ethnicity... as they say "healer heal thy self".

Actually now you're making accusations and putting out lies.
You are the one who called me a Jew-boy.
You are the one who talked about how others called you an anti-semite and prefaced your post with a warning about that.

You are also the one who said he wanted to kill me. You are the one who said he wanted to gut me. You are the one who said I should look into why you left the military and insinuated it was for violence.

So please, if your brother wanted to draw me out, he sure as heck will get embarassed. And if you want to draw me out even more, your fraternity will be shamed.

You do remember what shame is right? It's how you felt after you said those things and said you would leave Greekchat so as to not shame your brothers.

Ahem... please do not post misleading statements or outright lies... the post that you refered to with the comment "Jew-boy" is as follows:

http://www.greeksource.com/gcforums/...5&pagenumber=3
Your constant insults against other's backgrounds, politics, religion, culture, country makes your post about racist brothers sadly commical - you meet one every day when you look in the mirror. Case in point: using the term "Anglo" or "Anglo-boy" as a insulting or dismissive term is in fact a racist... after-all that is what you would call me if I dismissed you as "Jew" or "Jew-boy" wouldn't you?

Now as you see it was an admonishment for you to cease spewing you hateful filth by attempting to show you the context of your comments or insults. Obviously this was lost on you... so I'll lay it out:
If you insult another based on his culture or ethnicity then you are making a racists remark
I hope this has dumbed it down enough for you.

Rudey 09-07-2004 05:33 PM

And I'll say it again. You being an Anglo is not a racist statement. You need to stop cheapening other people's sad experiences. Anglo is not a race nor religion.

Again, you called me a Jew boy. You prefaced it with a sentence but that is a nice little insult that Neo-Nazis would use and you actually used it. You are just like those morons in the fraternities who do blackface. You used it and it's unacceptable but I'm sure since you're not Jewish you can tell me it's OK.

-Rudey
--Now please stop shaming those beautiful letters psycho-killer.

Holy Crap are you dumb!

Please use some of your "education"... READ THE DAMNED POST! I stated that if an ignorant and angry little man like you uses the term "Anglo", as you so often do, to dismiss/demean/insult another - then that was the same as making a racist remark. Hell I even provided you with a contextual example to help you understand. Now please, please go back and look at my post before you embarass yourself further with these baseless arguements.

So now you imply I'm a Neo-Nazi, and compared me an ignorant "Blackfacer". Interesting I'll add that to the list of Anti-Semite, Anti-Zionist, Anti-Jewish (I make a distinction between those three), Anti-American, a snuff-film enthusiast, a child molestor, a pedophile, a psycho... etc. Anything else you'd like to add to that list so that I can keep an accurate account of what a horrible person I am?

Why do you persist in being such a hateful little fuck? What is your beef with the world that inspires you to demean, attack, insult, degrade, or harass others simply for speaking? Are you so afraid of others that disagree with you that you have to resort to the tactics of a hatemonger? Please tell us, we'd love to know why.

I don't find anything funny about that phrase at all let alone laught out loud funny. Funny how in a thread about racist types of comments a phrase like this would come up. I'm not an immigrant but live around many and NONE of them like being called that term.

Rudey 09-07-2004 06:05 PM

So you curse. You threaten to kill me. Tell me you want to gut me. Tell me people have called you an anti-semite. Preface posts with warnings that some people might consider you an anti-semite and now cursing. Well you always cursed but I forgot to mention that earlier.

Again, Anglo is not a race. Get it straight.

Again, I don't care what context you use that disgusting language in. Don't. I am Jewish and I am telling you damn well right now that it's unacceptable.

You want to talk about dumb? How old were you when you finished college? How did you shame your letters, say you would leave Greekchat because of it, and then come back on? How did you try and draw me out?

It's sad that a Lambda Chi Alpha can use Jew-boy and try and make excuses for its use.

I believe she's a Chinese immigrant...

And that is not racist nor anti-semitic even if she said she disliked immigrants. But I don't think she feels that way.

CBC, but I do know that some non-CBCs like to be called that. It sets them apart from CBCs, especially "bananas" like myself.

ETA: CBC=Canadian Born Chinese
ABC=American Born Chinese
Banana= yellow on the outside, white inside (synonyms include "twinkie" and the Cantonese term "jook-sing" (hollow bamboo))

That's HK pop culture. Liking dim sum, having the bride change three times at a wedding, celebrating Chinese New Year, etc is still part of being a banana.

adpiucf 09-07-2004 10:21 PM

I'm a third generation Russian Jewish-American and I LOVE my bubble tea... which is in sad short supply over here!

Is there bubble tea in DC? (another reason to move to LA or NYC)

Optimist Prime 09-07-2004 10:24 PM

Racism doesn't fit into my fraternity. My chapter (Iota Zeta) has brothers of all races. Also, the chapter where I'm finishing up (Theta Xi) has all diferent colors of guys. Now that I think of it, so has every chapter that I've ever met. Actully, it violates our creed to be racist. If a pledge said something racist, he would black balled.

those things really don't always comprimise a banana. a banana is someone who gave up all of the nuances of their own culture...in order to assimilate and lose their cultural identity.

Glitter650 09-07-2004 11:01 PM

Just had to say... I have at least 3 places to get bubble tea on my street alone.... :D I rather enjoy it... but only certain flavors.

I'm sure there are some sisters out there who have certain prejudices..but my chapter I feel to be very accepting, and I've never been made to feel uncomfortabe because of comments from my sisters...
