Hurricane Ivan
Thought Labor Day would not be complete until we had started yet ANOTHER hurricane thread. Everyone say hi to Ivan, the newest storm to threaten our poor, battered state.
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ftp/graphics...F/062103W5.gif I swear, if one more weekend is ruined by a hurricane...I'm moving! If we're going to get flooded and blown away, why can't we at least miss some work and school? :( |
ugh, when i first heard about Ivan a few days ago- all i kept thinking was 'please God, no..' i hope it spares Florida. anything could happen, but poor Florida has been through enough. i think it is about time for me to move from the state....:(
|
Oh no! This has been a bad year for Florida...
|
It might become cat. 5. Scary stuff.
|
Dont know why Mother Nature Hates Florida?:(
Have some Nice Brothers There who are hurting for Places to be at! BN at Fl. Tech. are having Founders Day There in a week! Not sure if they can have it now!:o |
I really hope that this one turns away and doesn't hit Florida... you guys have already taken too many for the team :(

Computer models can be quite fickle sometimes, as was demonstrated by Frances. She came barreling down the outer islands of the Bahamas a Cat 3 storm with 145 mph winds but eventually calmed down (by not much) into a Cat 2 storm with over 100 mph winds by the time she made landfall in the Florida peninsula. Predicted tracks over 72 hours beyond the current position are really 'best guesses'.
Ivan's computer prediction model has it probably crossing Hispaniola Island (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and much of Cuba, which has some pretty mountainous terrain; that could slow down his development and temper his bite for a short time until he gets to the open seas, where the warm Gulf Stream can help feed it back to its mean old self. Depending on weather patterns later in the week, Ivan could turn south and enter the Gulf of Mexico, dodging most of Florida except the Keys and possibly the Panhandle if it curves northward once it gets in the Gulf. That's when the rest of the Gulf states and Mexico will hafta be on its toes. Or it can go further north, this time giving South Florida an ass-kicking as it makes its way to the Gulf. Just be careful out there folks... anything can change between now and next week. |
We can't take another hurricane. Our house got destroyed by Frances. We already had roof damage from Charley but Frances decided to rip off all of our tarps and temporary roof repairs since we were unable to get someone out to repair the damage. Water got into the house. It's all in the walls and in the ceilings plus the roof has more damage now. Our house smells like a wonderful mixture of mildew and dry wall. In other words, we can't live there until someone comes out to fix the damage which could take forever considering there's millions of other people who need repairs to their homes also. I'm not sure what to do since my roommate (also my landlord) has her boyfriend's place to run to but mine is in Atlanta. I can't sleep on someone's couch for the next 2 months (it could take that long to fix the damage) so there's a chance I may have to quit my job and move to Atlanta. Sigh....
If Ivan decides to get Central Florida, I think the house will be leveled. :( |

I'm REALLY sorry :( I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers that everything works out, and works out well for you *HUGS* :) |
Not another hurricane for Florida! :( Or anywhere else along the Gulf - AlphaSigOU is correct - it's too early to tell exactly where Ivan is headed.
Stay safe, everyone. ZTAngel, I'm so sorry to hear about your house. :( |
there are new predictions that will follow Charley's path.
i hear that there is some sort of stationary front above Florida that is causing so many hurricane to come our way. right now there is a new front that is causing Ivan to head more west. |
ZTAngel, I am so sorry to hear about your house. :( *hugs*
|
sorry
Sorry to hear about your house!!
You're in my thoughts and prayers!! Cas |
Thursday/Friday are the peak of hurricane season. After this week, (historically) it will begin to slack off (after Ivan, of course).
lifesaver was a meterology major in college, before he changed to another worthless degree, political science. |
as of right now, it is headed for the gulf of mexico. but we know how things change...

ZTAngel, so sorry to hear about your house! :( Best wishes for a speedy recovery and help from FEMA/insurance!
|
ZTAngel- keep us updated. I doubt there is much we on GC can do but offer our thoughts and prayers as well as an outlet for your frustrations over the repair process.
((HUGG)) |
Just saw on The Weather Channel that its now a Cat 5 storm and almost a Super Cat 5 with winds at 160 MPH. Damn, that shit is just scary. Lets hope it weakens before it makes landfall. That shit would be on par with Camille and the 1900 Galveston storm (intensity, hopefully not lives lost).
They also said that 90% of the homes on Grenada were damaged or destroyed. And that happened when the storm was a Cat 3. |
Bend over, Florida... here comes Ivan!
Sucks to be hit three times in rapid succession by three hurricanes... :( Chances are that it may weaken as it crosses Cuba, but it might intensify as it crosses the Straits of Florida. |
This might sound a little mean, but I hope all these storms scare the crap out of all the old people/retirees and inturn makes them want to leave SoFL. Sometimes I wish they all lived in the panhandle.
On a serious note, I'm really worried about Ivan. I was one of the lucky people in my neighborhood to have not lost power, TV, Sat, Water or had structure damage to our house. 3 houses down from me our neighbor had a huge oak tree crash into his house. That was actually a common thing in my neighborhood, seeing trees crashed on houses with 20 ft+ of roots dangling in the air. My roomates and I were being good samaritans and let people in our neighborhood come by for some refreshing AC, kill some beers and use the phone. We actually had parties all day/all night for 3-4 days. All our friends came over, we were barbecue'ing in the storm with 50mph winds going crazy around us, had a frig slam packed full of beer and Jaegermeister with a couple packs of redbull. Keep in mind though, we're in Jacksonville. It was by far a fun labor day weekend even with Frances. I don't think Ivan will be fun for anyone. :( |

Go away you stupid hurricane!
I'm just tired of having no power, no a/c, and not being able to leave the house because we're afraid someone will steal the generators. I just want life back to normal. Oh yeah, and running water. |

i definitely feel your pain considering i live about 20 min. from you. i did not lose any power either since my neighborhood's power lines are underground. Ivan is freaking me out too. this is just one really bad season for everyone esp. florida. i hear that the chance is greater that the storm will either go to the Bahamas or the Gulf of Mexico. florida is just caught in the middle. we are definitely in danger though. i heard on the news that when Ivan went through Guatemala, it destroyed a prison and all the prisoners escaped!! |

I've been in Ft Laud for a week; got here just in time for Frances and I am supposed to fly out to DC on Sat... I hope the airports stay open... I'm tempted to pack my mom and dad up with me!

We were also extremely lucky because Frances got downgraded to a CAT-2 and didn't stay the CAT-4 that it was. I don't even want to think about how badly KSC would be damaged if that had been the case. |
The weatherman called this hurricane Ivan the Terrible. It seems so scary. I hope that all of the Floridians are safe.
|
prayers and good thoughts to all involved.
may ivan pass you by, |
((HUGGS)) to all the Floridians on GC. A few more days, and hopefully Ivan will spare your areas.
Oh- here's a nut in the Iowa State paper saying God is sending the Hurricanes to persuade your vote. http://www.iowastatedaily.com/vnews/.../4141077d54a69 |
I'm wondering how far the radius is on this storm. Because with the current track, it's on the other side of the state from me, so I'm wondering if it's like Charley and we'd only get a few showers, or if we'd get winds stronger than 50 mph.
|
Yet another weekend of mine is disrupted due to the weather :( I'm going to my parents house in Melbourne, because it looks like Tampa's gonna get hit with this one. Problem is, my hometown just took a beating from Frances, so many places are without power there.
As for the whole voting issue, I've been seeing Bush all over the news here. He's loading bottles of water into people's cars, he's helping out with the Red Cross, he's giving his little bro Jeb $ to help us out with the millions of dollars of damage. I appreciate his actions in trying to aid our state. |
Oh Florida!! I hope everyone comes out of this one OK! Hopefully there are no more out there!
|
I feel really really bad for Florida right now :(
I'm going on vacation to the mountains of NC next week. I was supposed to meet my parents and my grandparents (from Texas) there. Well my grandparents have cancelled, thanks to Ivan, and I'm upset because I was really looking forward to seeing them. Mr. SSS and I are still going to meet my parents there, but we may end up cutting our trip short because we'll be in a valley and don't want to be there if there's gonna be a potential for flooding. |
The weather channel says Ivan is 150 miles per hour winds right now, and thats a cat. 4 storm... isnt 155+ winds a cat 5? Does this mean is it 6 mph winds speeds different from a cat 5?
