ADPiAkron and Hannahgirl's Recruitment Thread
Hello everyone!
Last night Hannahgirl (Delta Gamma from The University of Akron) and myself (Alpha Delta Pi from The University of Akron) attended Sorority Forum at our school as alumnae members of our sororities!! Let me just say that we had a blast seeing each other and talking about greekchat!! When we were talking we both agreed that Recruitment Stories are our favorite and we said we wanted to start a thread ourselves! Well here it is! This is our story about recruitment at The University of Akron as alumnae member's of our respective sororities!! |
cool!!!!!!!! that sounds so awesome! have fun!!
|
Here are the dates for Recruitment at The University of Akron:
September 1, 2004, Z-Day September 2, 2004, Meet the Greeks September 3, 2004, House Tours September 9, 2004, The ABC's of Greek Life September 10, 2004, Leaders of the Pack September 11, 2004, Preference Party and Bid Day |
August 31
Alpha Delta Pi I spent 4 hours over at the ADPi house bagging cookies that the chapter would be passing out at the Z-Day Festival. I had sent out an email about a month prior and included it in the newsletter, that the chapter needed alumnae to donate cookies for this event. I have never been more proud to be an alumnae member when I saw all of the cookies donated!! S adly at this time I heard that only 29 girls had signed up for Recruitment and paid the fee. |
September 1st
Z-Day Festival I called the Recruitment Vice President to see how the turn out was at the festival. She said it was horrible because of the location! Recently Akron opened up its new student rec center, and that day they were giving tours, etc. So they thought that would be a good location to hold the festival-- but obviously it was not! |
September 2nd
Sorority Forum Sorority Forum was sooooo much fun! Each chapter was allowed to have 4 chapter members and 3 alumnae in attendance. Like I said before, HannahGirl was there for DG and I was there for ADPi. A good number of girls attended and more girls signed up for formal recruitment. I spoke with so many girls that my head was spinning! It was like old times rushing again! I had a blast! It was so neat to share Alpha Delta Pi with these women, and also letting them know what a wonderful Greek Community Akron has and how the sororities on campus genuinely care about one another and the betterment of the Greek Community. On a better note-- 60 girls have signed up and paid the recruitment fee! Still not great but muccccccccch better than the other day! |
Tonight is House Tours-- I will let you know if I hear anything and I know HannahGirl will do the same!!!!!! Go Greek-- Go Akron! :)
|
Alright....sorry Andrea has been running this thread by herself since the past two days have been crazy for me.
Ditto on everything she said.... I have always loved Sorority Forum, it is just a great event for the PNMs to come and see the chapters and explore what being part of a sorority is. I, too, enjoyed sharing about my chapter and encouraging the women to continue with the experience that they have now begun. We had a Panhellenic meeting afterwards that Andrea wasn't present for so I'll kind of pass on what happened from there. There are 60 women signed up and as a whole, we need about 120 women for every house on campus to be at total.......:( We have less than a week to at least double the number that are signed up right now....we mentioned to the chapters that in order to help ourselves, we need to help everyone else and work our tails off to get women interested! We have wonderful PR tools (postcards, booklets) that look very impressive so I'm hoping that we use those to our advantage. I'm not sure how house tours went today since I just got home from the Browns game and have not talked to our President or VP Membership. But I'm sure that it went smoothly. Well that is all I have for now. I'm sure I'll update again once I hear about tours! |

I just had to add something else...... One of the best parts of Thursday night was the fact that Andrea and I got a chance to chat. Since I was a freshman when she was a senior, we obviously didn't know each other very well, but b/c of GC, we've been able to connect on this type of level and its great! So much love to Andrea because she definately is one of the great women that drove me to becoming so involved in my collegiate years even if she didn't know it until now. And also a shout out to Shannan because of all the great times we had disaffiliated from our chapters in 2002. I might not have officially been a Rho Gam (I was PHC Pres) but thanks to her and the rest of the Rho Gams, they made the three Council members feel like we were! Much love to Shan also! /hijack! |
sounds like a terrific time is being had by all.
let the good times roll. |
Oh Andrea-- you are too sweet! I am glad to know I left such an impact on others-- but please know you have done the same to the ones who have followed you! I must say Akron has some great leaders!!
We know 120 sounds so easy-- but at Akron you have to understand that it is a true commuter school and only 3000 live on campus...out of 19,000 undergrads. We also have a good number of non-traditional students-- so that adds in also. But I know if the girls worked hard enough to get the word out that 120 is possible!! Wow I cannot imagine all of the houses at total (65)!!!!! Well still no update on the house tours or if the number of PNMs has gone up-- we will keep you updated once we hear something! |
Thanks for the update girls. I am on the end of being House Manager for ADPi so I dont know everything going on with Recruitment. I do get to talk with the Rho Gams who are ADPi and a few other girls, but I dont know all the inside scoops. I too wish we could get a huge number to go through. Im pulling we'll get at least 100 by this Thurs. if not more. Keep us updated. Ill be at the house Weds but its just to make sure its clean and everything is going ok there. I miss doing recruitment :(
Note to DG Andrea. I love you girl, we had a balst 2002 and you were an AWESOME panhell pres. I miss all the stuff we did and fun we had. Im glad you and ADPi Andrea are getting to get back into it and help as alums :) |
Alright so I'm heading to my chapter's meeting tonight to watch them practice and get some loose ends tied up with the advisors. The girls are ready to go and things are set so I'm just hoping that their excitement level is up and that the number of women going through is up also! I'll update a little later tonight!
|
Thanks Andrea! I have not heard from the Recruitment Vice President or my cousin all this week! Kind of bummed but I understand they're busy and do not need me butting in!! :) I will be at the house Friday-- so I can update on my side then! Find out the dish Andrea-- I am so excited!
|
Well just got home from the house and it sounds as if there are now 70 women signed up for recruitment. I was hoping for more than that but I guess we'll just have to deal with what we get. We'll just have to COB like mad!
Some more good news on our side though. We have two new transfer students!! The DG from OU has been around the past month, but we just got a DG from Auburn that we all got to meet tonight. Both girls are so sweet and we're very happy to have them!!! |
Awesome Andrea. Its always great to have some new transfer sisters. :)
Thanks for the update. Its really sad to hear how low the numbers are this fall. I know ADPi needs 20+ for house total. Do you think it is because the locations of the sign up tables being in the rec center? Are they making everyone go to the rec center for something and thats why we had it there or what? I just dont see as many students going through the rec center, even if its new, I see more going to the student center, where we always had sign ups. I am just really disappointed with how everything is going. I know the grad assistants are doing all they can, but do you think if we had a Greek Advisor than we maybe could have this running more smoothly and numbers possibly up? I hate to see all the sororities suffer this year and CORing all fall to get to totals. I know they are all awesome sororities though so no matter what all of them will try their hardest. I just wish there was some way alums could help make greek life more prominent or more advertised on campus. I just never want to see us lose chapters and have low numbers. I still have faith all of us will have a great week this week. Thanks again for the update. |
I had no idea that they weren't in the Student Union.....
From what I've heard from my President, things are just very unorganized. Not having a reliable person like a Greek Life Director over the summer has hurt us tremendously. But now that Susan is in place as Interim Director and we have tons of help from Brandi and Michelle, I think things will move along. I do think that we'll have a hard hit on this recruitment and I think that is why they are thinking of having another in January so we can make up for the women we don't get now. I think what we should do is get the Greek Alumni Council more involved with men's and women's recruitment. I know there are many people involved in that organization that work on campus or something to that effect. Maybe something as little as wearing a button saying Go Greek will help with PR??? I'm just hoping that we can handle everything appropriately and do what we need to do to get closer to total. DG also needs 20+. Alpha Phi and Kappa need 30+, and I think AGD needs 18 or so. So we are all in the same boat together! |
I believe the only thing held in the Rec Center was Z-day-- the Welcome Back Carnival.
Actually, 70 girls is not to bad-- that is if no one drops out and if they all have the GPA! My first year being in charge of recruitment quota was 9!! When you came through Andrea I believe it was around that too (11ish)! So 14 being quota currently is good-- as long as we have some dedicated, intelligent girls! I know we can all get our numbers up-- we always do! Its just that the girls need to be more dedicated to this! In my opinion-- in a "crisis" like this I think that the Rho Gam's and even some chapter exec members should be out walking around getting people to sign up-- in their classes, in the student union, ANYWHERE! I just do not believe the dedication is there! I so wish Greek Alumni Society could do more-- it would be just so hard for the Alums to be on campus during the day with work and all! I keep meaning to talk to my cousin and tell her they need to chalk the sidewalks and go in the classrooms and write on the boards about signing up-- they need to make fliers to distribute and hang fliers evvvvvvvvverywhere! I do not think the word is out and that is part of the problem! GO GREEK should be the only thing the students hear and see when walking through campus! Congrats on the new transfers-- what good schools they come from-- what a wonderful addition!!!!!! |
Yeah it was only Z Day, but still many complained about how bad it was and how noone really came.
I agree it would be great if we had some dedicated, but that desire has to be there. I think its there more for some alums than actives lol. As for actives being out getting the word out, I agree, but just to go along with that, chalking on the sidewalks is no longer allowed. You get fined I believe if you chalk on campus. My diamond bought me chalk one year when I first came in and right after it wasnt allowed anymore. It was a great thing to see all ove campus, but the officials felt it was making the school look bad by putting stuff all over the sidewalks, ect... No matter how many sign up if we can retain those same numbers, well be good, but in the past years, we have had problmes wiht retention so we shall see. Im pulling for all the sororities though.:D |
So I talked to my cousin tonight-- she is a rho gam! She said our chapter is ready to go and was actually just finishing up a recruitment practice.
She said house tours were so-so and that approx 70 girls signed up is where it stands right now. She said she is working the table tomorrow-- I told her to walk up to complete strangers if she has to! ;) Really though I told her to be really proactive at the table and approach anyone she feels may be interested-- don't wait for them to come to you, go to them first! I am not going to be there tomorrow-- are you Andrea? I will update all of you on what I know on Friday night!! Bye for now! |
I'll be at the house every night. Our membership advisor is (I guess you could say) "training" me to possibly take over for her next year so I'm doing a lot for the chapter as it is right now.
Since I was on PHC two years ago and was VP Membership last year, I know the most about PHCs computer program and our computer program so I am pretty much taking care of all of that for them. It's just nice to have that one person that takes care of all of it so its ready to go after the parties are over. I also gathered all the alum that are helping out this weekend so I've been handling all that too. It's surely kept me busy! Well....here we go! Recruitment starts in less than 19 hours! |
Best of Luck to everyone--
Alpha Delta Pi Alpha Gamma Delta Alpha Phi Delta Gamma Kappa Kappa Gamma and all of the wonderful women coming through! And to add on to about getting everyone there-- I totally know what you mean Andrea-- I have been coordinating Pref Food and Alum help all week with the RVP-- I send out emails, people reply, and I let the RVP know! I am so excited! Yes I know I am crazy and that's what makes me- me!! |

Ditto to the good luck wishes! I'm excited too. I keep telling people that I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't love it so much. My appreciation for recruitment has definately grown since serving as PHC pres and VP Membership. I've done and seen so much that goes into it, I just love being apart of that process!!! |
Let us know how Fri, Sat and Sun go, that is if you two will be there. How was it as an alum? What were the potentials like? Any mroe girls sign up?
Im sad because I was going to go help, but I am actually babysitting my nephew Thurs and Fri evening so I cant make it. I hope everything goes great. :) Keep us updated. |
I am not there tonight for ADPi-- but Andrea is there for DG! So we will have to wait to hear what she has to say! I figure it won't be to late when she posts because tonight is for grade cuts only. Let's all pray that she posts saying 100 girls came through!!!!!!!!! *anxiously awaiting Andrea's post*
|
In reading Jocelyn's post I realized I forgot to tell you about my rush crush! I was only there one night so far-- but I know this girl from waaaaaay back! She is a freshman at Akron-- but when she was 8 years old I coached her in cheerleading! She went to the same HS as me and cheered with my younger sister! I wish I had known she was going through so I could have written a rec-- but oh well! Just crossing my fingers that she goes ADPi! Or DG! ;)
|
Well....for the moment you've been waiting for........;)
First round of parties were fabulous! It consisted of conversation between PNMs and actives and there was also a presentation in the middle about the "ABCs of Greek Life". The women who are going through are so great and there aren't many women who have poor grades!! A lot of these women are over 3.0 and I think that is absolutely spectacular!! Alright......I think that is about it. Have a good night everyone, I'm exhausted!! by the way......92 women are signed up for recruitment. 51 attended tonights parties!!!!!!!! Thought I'd leave you hanging for a little bit!!! :p |
Thank goodness. 92, not too shabby. Awesome. I love to hear more girls with high GPAs are going through. Thats awesome, less to cut for grades. I hope we all get some awesome new sisters.... Im so excited now. Thanks for the update and suspense lol.
|
92 women! That is wonderful! But where were the other 41 tonight? Makes me nervous!! I will be at ADPi tonight!! Go Greek-- 92 women is great!

Ok-- to everyone reading this thread-- tomorrow is Pref and Bid Day-- tonight is Philanthropy Party-- so you will have to wait until tonight for an update!! Sit tight!! ;)
Just for those of you from a big school-- 92 girls signing up is awwwwwesome at Akron (although we do have 19,000 undergrads :( )! If only all 92 were going through-- but HG is right, it will leave the rest for COB-- at least 92 took the initiative to sign up and pay the fee!! Sooooo excited for tonight!!! |

Off to the parties....be back later to update!
|
Alright.....
Heres my update....I'm sure Andrea(ADPi) will have one later. The parties were fabulous! DG had an 85% return rate!!!! I think 44 women came back for our Philanthropy round. We had many things going on at once during this party. We gave tours of the house, painted dog bowls as our philanthropy project, and had anchor and star cookies for refreshments. We are very pleased with the women that returned and are looking forward to seeing a lot of them come back tomorrow. As for tomorrow. Quota has been set at 11. Of the 92 that were signed up, 38 or so dropped and I want to say that 54 or 55 are left over. So if anyone drops between now and bid signing, not everyone will have a chance at making quota. Well its been a long night, I'm going to sleep for a couple hours and then I'll be back at the house at 8am tomorrow. I stayed for a little bit and helped set up for Pref and the house just looks absolutely amazing! I'm hoping for another great return rate and looking forward to welcoming some new sisters into DG and into Greek Life at The University of Akron!!!! *Hope all went well with ADPi, Andrea!!!!* |
Everything went great! I am not sure of our exact return rate because I got there late, but I do know 48 girls attended our parties last night. We also gave house tours, and we worked on a project for the Ronald McDonald House. Alumnae and Chapter members donated a large amount of small toiletries to make care bags for the visitors to RMcD House and the bags (donated by McDonalds) were stuffed the bags with red, yellow, and white tissue paper! It was such a cute idea and turned out so well!
Last night was a late night-- so I am still really tired! But my best friend and I helped the chapter out by buying pizza and chips for them and also getting the beautiful nametags ready for tomorrow-- and also were there to give moral support! Also, when I came home I burnt 13 copies of the best song in the whole world to include in the new Alpha gift bag for tonight-- DJ $crilla's Alpha Delta Pi!!!!!! I am unable to go to Pref Party today because I am starting a new PT job at an art studio today at 10am. I will be working until 5pm and will swing by the house on the way home-- my new job is only 1 block away from the sorority house!! My sisters are ready today-- and through all of the usual ups and downs of recruitment- I know I will have some of the most wonderful new sisters by the end of today! Good Luck to Andrea and all the rest of the chapters at Akron!! |
Thanks for the update girls.
Glad to know we will all be getting some great new women. Today seems like it will be a long day, but good. Congrats in advance to ADPi, DG, and all other chapters on U Akrons campus. |

Well everyone I am home from my first day of work at my new PT job and I stopped at the ADPi house on my way home!!
We took 11 new wonderful, and gorgeous might I add, Alpha's!! I am so excited!! I do not know any of the invite/acceptance information so I can't share that-- but who cares when you have 11 new sisters! And in case you were wondering about my Rush Crush-- she is now an ADPi!! Last night she was unable to attend the Philanthropy Parties because she was in the hospital with a horrible kidney infection-- but was able to come today and I was able to be there when she came home to ADPi!! On are more random note, I was saying by to "rush crush" and this girl sitting next to her (another new sister!!) asked me if she looked familiar to me. I said kinda and she then proceeded to tell me I coached her in cheerleading when she was 12!!! Oh boy am I getting old! Damn-- I was doing good recruiting back then!! Gotta start young! ;) Thanks everyone for tuning in! Congrats to Andrea and Delta Gamma also!! I am sure she will have an update tonight! |
Ok heres my update!!!!
Congrats to ADPi on their 11 new Alphas!!! We also achieved quota and have 11 new, beautiful Pi Alphas!!! I have been on cloud 9 since I picked up our list today!! I got the be the person to tell our Pres and VP Membership which was sooo cool! Pref parties were fabulous! We had 27 women attend and our return rate was 80%. I'm soooo proud of my girls!!! We also got 11 girls out of our top 20 on our bid list which I thought was fabulous also! To update on the rest. Alpha Gamma Delta - 11 Alpha Phi - 9 Kappa Kappa Gamma - 2 APhi and Kappa might have snap bidded but only 2 women that filled out cards did not get a bid! Congrats again to all the chapters!!! :D |
Congrats Andrea! I do know we got 11 girls out of our top 16-- the president did tell me that-- but I forgot to ask how many attended our preference party!
Ohhhh poor Kappa! That absolutely breaks my heart-- my understanding was that they even had a consultant and people from other Kappa chapters helping!! Oh please do not let them close!!! |
