Clinton has heart attack

Former President Bill Clinton Had a Heart Attack and Is in a New York Hospital (12:20 PM ET)

-Rudey
--I hope everything is OK!

Lady Pi Phi 09-03-2004 12:33 PM

That's bad. He's 58 and having quadruple by-pass surgery.

My grandfather had a triple by-pass and he was never the same afterwards.

Sister Havana 09-03-2004 12:40 PM

Good thoughts to him and his family.

That's scary.

lionlove 09-03-2004 12:42 PM

How scary :( I hope he comes out alright.

Jill1228 09-03-2004 01:02 PM

Good thought and vibes to him and his family

adduncan 09-03-2004 01:04 PM

Many prayers for him and his family - as well as the skills of the cardiologist and surgeon, should he need them.

My dad had a heart attack in 1992 w/ a quad bypass years later. I wouldn't wish either of them on my worst enemy's dog.

KSigkid 09-03-2004 01:11 PM

Hopefully everything turns out ok...there are amazing things that cardiologists can do these days, hopefully he comes out of this feeling well.

Kevin 09-03-2004 01:14 PM

Very tragic. Didn't his father (or mother) die of a heart condition?

AXOjen 09-03-2004 01:25 PM

In terms of politics and character, I have little regard for Bill Clinton. But I'm still deeply saddened to hear of his heart condition and I pray that he makes a full recovery as quickly as possible.

My heart goes out to his daughter, too. This must be terribly distressing for her. I hope that she and Mr. and Mrs. Clinton find comfort from the prayers and best wishes of people around the world.

Edited to add: I'm confused. The latest AP news story says that "It does not appear that Clinton had a heart attack"... merely that he went to the hospital with mild chest pain and shortness of breath. Also, the bypass surgery is not being performed today but at a "later date". Where are y'all finding the information about quadruple bypass surgery and a heart attack?

ZTAngel 09-03-2004 01:27 PM

I hope he's ok. He's so young to being having these problems. Such sad news. :(

DeltAlum 09-03-2004 01:35 PM

If it catches a potential problem and corrects it, it's good news.

It appears from reading several sources that President Clinton experienced mild chest pains and shortness of breath and went to a hospital, where he underwent tests and the bypass surgery was recommended.

Those sources talk about "potential heart problems," but not a heart attack -- although there is often some confusion in this area.

There also seems to be some confusion whether the surgery will take place on Saturday or Tuesday.

PoohsHoneyBee 09-03-2004 01:47 PM

my thoughts are with him

my dad went through the exact same thing

IowaStatePhiPsi 09-03-2004 01:51 PM

((mental hug to the Clinton family))
:(
I hope he gets better quickly.

I think I'll skip the greasy chinese food today and have a salad.

Lady Pi Phi 09-03-2004 01:56 PM

I saw the story on cbc.ca and on yahoo.com. They both mentioned quadruple by=pass surgery.

However, that was an hour and a half ago, and it looks like they have updated their information. I think the earlier reports were mostly rumors.

DeltAlum 09-03-2004 02:56 PM

Reports now say no actual heart attack.

His biological father died in a car accident. His mother had cancer. Maybe his adopted father (Clinton) had a heart condition?

Quadruple bypass sounds intense. One of my teachers in middle school had one of those, and she was out for most of the semester afterwards.

The1calledTKE 09-03-2004 04:30 PM

Good luck and good health Clinton. You were a great president and we still need you around.

It is quite a recovery period. I believe he'll get better than adequate medical care though. Give him a couple of months and he'll be fine.

Sounds like Bill won't be stopping in for a Big Mac at McDonalds any time soon.

wrigley 09-03-2004 05:04 PM

My prayers go out to him and his family.

AKA_Monet 09-03-2004 05:13 PM

Genetic issues...

President Clinton was on "The Daily Show" the last time I had seen him, right after the Democratic Convention and the 60 minutes interview about his book...

He looked like he has lost a lot of weight in all his interviews...

But he was probably under an excessive amount of stress that just wore his body--mainly his heart down...

Prayers to him and his family...

As a past US President, he does have excellent healthcare for life...

Cosign.

My mother had this done in February, and is still recovering. Because they're becoming so common, we tend to think that by-passes are fairly easy operations, but they are still major heart surgery. I feel bad that President Clinton is going through this at such a relatively early age!

Lady Pi Phi 09-03-2004 05:40 PM

I just head on the radio again, that he is having quadruple bypass surgery tomorrow.

I wish him a speedy recovery and good health in the future.

Senusret I 09-03-2004 06:19 PM

Get well soon, Brother Bill!!!!

tinydancer 09-03-2004 09:22 PM

Oh, I saw him on tv recently and thought how well he looked! Holding good thoughts for him and a speedy recovery. A friend of mine had similar surgery back in the spring and the recovery is a real bitch.:(

Taualumna 09-03-2004 10:34 PM

Best wishes on a speedy recovery.

cutiepatootie 09-03-2004 10:47 PM

yeah what was a heart attack was mild chest pains and shortness of breath....last i heard 2 hrs ago was that he is having surgery tomorrow ( sat) and he is at a world renowned hospital in NYC that apparently is the best in the country.

Peaches-n-Cream 09-03-2004 11:04 PM

FYI: Bill Clinton called and talked to Larry King on his show. He will probably have surgery on Monday or Tuesday. He said he was somewhat afraid, but if he doesn't have the surgery he will almost certainly have a heart attack. He sounded in good spirits and even joked that "The Republicans aren't the only people who want four more years here."

Both Presidential candidates extend best wishes to the former President:

GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: And we're out here, we just received news that President Clinton has been hospitalized in New York. He is in our thoughts and prayers. We send him our best wishes for a swift and speedy recovery.

SEN. JOHN KERRY (D-MA), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Every single one of us, every single one of us wants to extend to him our best wishes, our prayers and our thoughts. And I want you all to let a cheer out and clap that he can hear all the way to New York, all the way to New York!

http://www.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0409/03/lkl.00.html

He is at Columbia Presbyterian in New York.

I love it! :)

KillarneyRose 09-04-2004 12:43 AM

My goodness, he's so young for that! He and his family are in my thoughts and prayers.

CatStarESP4 09-04-2004 01:50 AM

Clinton was the first President that I voted for in an actual election (1992) and not at a mock election. I also voted for him again in 1996!

I am still in shock after learning about his condition. I hope he has a speedy recovery! My thoughts and prayers are with with him and his family.

PhiPsiRuss 09-04-2004 09:54 AM

I hope that he gets well soon. It sounds like that you caught his condition early. With current medical technology, this may not be as serious as this type of surgery was 20 years ago.

Optimist Prime 09-04-2004 11:27 PM

...while he happened to be in New York...during the Republic National Convention....I smell conspiracy...I bet both Bush twins AND Zell Miller are involved. Go read my other thread.

cutiepatootie 09-05-2004 02:27 AM

You know you could be onto something........for a split moment i thought ....."hmmm....gee how convienent...he has all this heart trauma the very next day after the convention......taking the spotlight away from bush....." i serious thought that....like janet taking the heat off micheal with a "wardrobe malfunction" and Justin timberlake has always stood by the fact he has always idolized michael growing up........

Conspiracy...... if it looks fishy, and smells fishy....i bet it is fishy ! Sorry getting late and getting silly

So if he ends up dieing thats a conspriacy against Bush too; to take away attention from him?

ZTAngel 09-05-2004 11:05 AM

Yes, Clinton planned his heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery right around the RNC just to take the spotlight away from Bush. Sneaky, sneaky.

swissmiss04 09-05-2004 01:13 PM

Even if Clinton hated Bush's guts, I doubt he'd conveniently have this done now to distract from Bush or the RNC. There's nothing convenient or easy about a bypass surgery.

valkyrie 09-05-2004 06:45 PM

Oh my lord, now I've heard everything. Maybe the next theory will be that Bill Clinton, while having his pretend conspiracy bypass surgery, is posting on GC under the screen name IowaHawkMullet81.

AlphaGamDiva 09-05-2004 07:33 PM

i thought they said he didn't have a heart attack......??? maybe i'm wrong. i know he needed the surgery, but i didn't think it was an actual heart attack.

I can imagine his Day Runner for Friday:

1. Continue to beg Hillary for forgiveness
2. Find more places I haven't been for my book tour
3. Derail RNC by having heart issues. That damned cheerleader won't upstage me!
4. Buy Chelsea's b-day present

It's totally funny to joke about people having life-threatening illnesses and accidents.

HAHAHA.
