MTV Video Music Awards

Nothing too exciting so far... seems like they're just trying to squeeze in as many celebs as possible. WTF does Shaq have to do with music videos?

Sister Havana 08-29-2004 08:34 PM

Well, Shaq did have that rap career for a while. :)

Hot rumor is that Britney and Kevin Federline are going to get married live on the air at the VMAs tonight. Don't know how true that is.

smiley21 08-29-2004 08:50 PM

so far i cannot stand it. up until kanye - he is awesome. i do not like setting. i like the way it was done in NY and L.A. there is too much going on this year. and the sound is awful.

i hope kanye is the start of a good rest of the show.

ok i will stop complaining now.

ooh chaka kahn just came out....cool

supposedly stevie wonder is singing with alicia keys. that would rock.

i guess shaq is there cause he joined miami heat

Peaches-n-Cream 08-29-2004 08:51 PM

Chaka Khan sounded bad. And not bad in a good way. She hurt my ears. :(

Oh God, I felt bad for her, she sounded horrible.

I have a TON of respect for Kanye West... he is incredibly talented. And it's nice to see a male artist other than Puffy in a classy suit.

The dude in Hoobastank sounded awful... it sounded like bad karaoke... he was so off key until the strong notes- those are the only ones he hit

it was pretty painful to watch. i also felt the same about Yellowcard:rolleyes: somehow i think the sound was the least of their problems

Really, I heard that she and Usher were performing together.

Glad to see that couples in hiding are fully out tonight (Jay-Z and Beyonce, Marc A. and J. Lo)

kddani 08-29-2004 09:38 PM

Beyonce looks scary tonight

Oh god, it's Jessica singing with Stevie  Would've preferred Alicia by far.

Jessica sounded really weird on With You.

smiley21 08-29-2004 09:44 PM

the sound is screwed up. i thought jessica sounded great, but it was hard to tell cause the sound was bad.

oh yeah, i heard that too

UKDaisy 08-29-2004 09:50 PM

Okay, so far....... I'm thinking it has sucked. I mean, its okay....kinda like a cool free concert. But not the VMA's.

Poor Hoobastank..... i was really, really disappointed.

Jessica Simpson sounded good on Angels, I think. But she always wears me out watching her. She's so "breathy" on moving her head all around on With You. It makes me tired watching her.

Hopefully, something fun will happen......

smiley21 08-29-2004 10:03 PM

i am loving christina and nelly's performance. i cannot wait for her new album to come out. the performance will probably one of the best sounding ones of the night.

kddani 08-29-2004 10:08 PM

I don't know if i've ever seen Christina sound bad... she just has an amazing voice.

I'm also glad that she's found some class

KillarneyRose 08-29-2004 10:19 PM

[hijack]

I got to attend the MTV Video Music Awards and a few of the after parties in 1991. It was a lot of fun for a girl who had been living in her parents' house in Pittsburgh a month and a half prior. My friends and I felt very, very glamorous :)

I'm completely out of the loop now, because I have absolutely no idea who some of these folks are!

[/hijack]

kddani 08-29-2004 10:49 PM

WTF is this cracked out Partridge family in colorful robes weird thing? WTF is it doing on these awards? This music is horrible and it looks like some religious group gone mad!

PoohsHoneyBee 08-29-2004 10:50 PM

by your posts it seems i didn't miss anything sitting here at work

did anything great happen at all?

Xylochick216 08-29-2004 10:53 PM

Is it just me, or is this the worst VMAs ever? People don't look good at all, and the sound isn't that great. The only thing I've liked all night is the GAP ad with Lenny Kravitz and Sarah Jessica Parker. And I'm happy Maroon 5 won an award because they're one of the few bands today that sounds decent live.

Pooh, you're not missing anything. And I'm sure MTV will rerun the heck out of it this week.

Sister Havana 08-30-2004 12:29 AM

These VMAs were bad for the most part. The sound was awful, I really didn't like the stage setup, and what was with that Best Video Game Soundtrack category?

There were some good moments, though, like the Daily Show bits, the Alicia Keys/Stevie Wonder performance, and the Outkast performance at the end. But those were few and far between.

Jadey28 08-30-2004 07:01 AM

The VMA's sucked this year. I like how the Presidental Election was promoted~ trying to get young people to vote, but there is such a thing as overkill. I was impressed with Outkast, Kanye West, and Christina Aguilera/Nelly's performances. But mostly I just sat at the TV and talked with my roommate about how horrible everything was. I did not like the fact that there wasn't really a host...just a bunch of different celebrities for each category. Bad job MTV.

Oh, and the Gap commercials are awesome. I want to go shopping now. :p

ZTAngel 08-30-2004 08:55 AM

I turned it off after the first 15 minutes because it was so bad.

kandy36 08-30-2004 03:58 PM

i saw the beginning and the very end and i hated the fact that they were overkilling with the voting. i mean yea they want us to vote but dont pound it in our heads so much..it gives me a headache lol. oh i also thought it was funny when john kerry's daughters got booed. sorry i think stuff like that is hilarious.

i must say tho, the highlight of the evening was my favorite band winning the viewers choice award. it makes me feel like i helped them win bc i did!!!!!!!!

Steeltrap 08-30-2004 04:35 PM

Dismaying

To see Vivica A. Fox, 40, dancing on the stage with the Diseased (Ying-Yang) Twins. Next thing you know, she'll be dating Lil' Jon, who looks like a walking STD vector.

chideltjen 08-30-2004 04:45 PM

Glad I missed it... Sounds like a trainwreck.

WhirlwindTNX 08-30-2004 08:26 PM

The Olsen Twins

I don't know the girls name, but the half-dead one. I know ya'll saw her last night, she looked like she had cancer. Now if she just came out by herself she might have looked okay. But she came out with her sister for once I could tell a difference. Poor thing

smiley21 08-30-2004 09:01 PM

i loved the Gap commercials too. I hope this means the VMAs will not be in Miami any more. I just hate the way it was taped. ...complete chaos and i hope the person or persons who thought about the Miami awards show concept get demoted. just awful...

hijack- so is carson coming back to MTV and TRL full time? that would rock. he is TRL. i will have to start watching it again. i loved seeing him host the show in the past few weeks.

I really shouldn't make fun of her like that....but there was just such a big difference between the two. I don't even remember what she said. Did anyone hear what the sick Olsen said? And will someone please tell me the girls name? lol ;)

GeoffZ 08-31-2004 01:12 PM

"Sick Olsen" is Mary Kate. All she said was that she wanted to thank everyone for supporting her lately.

The show wasn't too special this year. I think they know now that they need to do it in smaller spaces, casue the sound sucked. The best parts for me were: Kayne (despite off key Chaka), Alcia/Stevie/Lenny, and "Lean Back" (especially Bruce Willis dancing). I liked the Gap commercials too. Sarah Jessica is so cute.

The worst was Vivica trying to "drop it like it's hot" with Lil Jon. And I wasn't feelin Nelly and X-tina's new crap song.

I miss that. I didn't know Bruce Willis had Rythem(sp). ;) :p

Lexicon 08-31-2004 06:53 PM

K, was it the Kerry daughters who got booed or Bush daughters?

And, I'm not a Fat Joe fan, but I learned how to "Lean Back" at Convention this summer and it was fun!

dzfan 08-31-2004 07:02 PM

i think it was the Bush daughters-there was an article about how they had to mute some of the noise too! YIKES. Regardless, I think what both sets of gals said was important-we totally need to take advantage of our priveledges of voting.

Lexicon 08-31-2004 07:06 PM

That's so screwed, considering they party with Diddy or Rush or whomever. Oh well. Thanks.

I don't think they'll do Miami again, the stars kept complaining about the heat.

How about Chicago?

the kerry daughters got booed

Xylochick216 08-31-2004 07:32 PM

Both sets of daughters got booed, which was totally unclassy. They were trying to promote voting. As much as I don't like Bush, I would never boo his daughters or him if I saw them. That's just plain rude.

BSP_Nicole 08-31-2004 10:03 PM

I'm pretty sure that the main reason they didn't have the VMA's in NYC this year was because of the Republican Convention (it would have taken MTV way too much planning w/all of the extra security).

I loved at the end when Outkast was preforming, and Andre 3000 said "And for the millionth time, Hey Ya". It just cracked me up.

(And personally, I hated the Gap ads... but that's just my $.02)

Nicole

he looked super hott

vanda 09-02-2004 12:57 PM

Am I the only one who thinks "Branch Davidian:The Musical" every time I see the Polyphonic Spree ( The guys in the colored robes)? They seem like a huge cult.
