Sorority and Fraternity Creeds
With rush (oops, sorry, I mean recruitment) season upon us, GreekChat is no doubt teeming with potential new members looking for information about the fraternities and sororities on their campuses and greek life in general.
As all of us greeks know, each of our organizations has a particular set of fundemental beliefs, convictions or purposes that we, as individual members, try to exemplify in our daily lives. These are most often summed up in what my sorority calls our Creed, although other organizations may use words such as Symphony, Constitution or Purpose. I'm sure this thread idea has been used before, but I thought it would be a nice idea if we could all write down our Creeds here and now to give PNMs some insight into what we are really about underneath all the recruitment fuss and feathers. |

The Creed of Alpha Delta Pi
I believe in Alpha Delta Pi. I believe that my sorority is more than a ritual or a symbol; that it is a way of life. I believe that the principles established by our founders in 1851 are enduring attributes, exemplifying the highest ideals of Christian womanhood. I believe that our motto, "We Live for Each Other," expresses the true spirit of fraternity; and that by living this motto my life will be enriched by true friendships and by unselfish service to mankind. I believe that the privilege of membership in Alpha Delta Pi brings the responsibility to do my best in whatever I undertake, always remembering that leadership requires confidence tempered with humility and courage blended with tolerance. I believe that I must strive to become a well-balanced person by following the dictates of the four points symbolized by our diamond-shaped badge: first, strengthening my own character and personality; second, watching my attitudes toward my fellow-beings; third, recognizing the value of high educational standards; and fourth, developing faith and loyalty. I believe that these four guide-posts, guarded by the stars and friendly hands clasped in the Adelphean bonds of fellowship, will lead me to achieve a rich and useful life. ~ Caralee Strock Stanard (I have this framed and prominently displayed in my bedroom as a reminder everyday of what I need to strive toward) |

The Symphony of Alpha Xi Delta
These things do we earnestly desire:
A clear vision of life, that with gracious and kindly hearts we may share both joy and sorrow, and bring into living reality the sisterhood of women. An appreciation of real merit and worth, steadfastness of soul, that without bitterness or defeat we may encounter misfortune, and with humility meet success. These things, o Lord, help us to instill within our hearts, that we may grow in courage and graciousness and peace. |
I love the title of "The Symphony of Alpha Xi Delta":D
Sounds like a beautifiul song! |
The purpose of Delta Delta Delta shall be to establish a perpetual bond of friendship among its members, to develop a stronger and more womanly character, to broaden the moral and intellectual life, and to assist its members in every possible way.
It shall also be the purpose of Delta Delta Delta to promote and develop mutually beneficial relationships between the Fraternity and the colleges and universities where the Fraternity has established chapters, to develop qualities of unselfish leadership among its members, and to encourage them to assume, with integrity and devotion to moral and democratic principles, the highest responsibilities of college women. (i'm pretty sure that second part was added later...but maybe i'm wrong) |
The Purpose of Sigma Kappa:

Fraternity Mission Statement
The objectives of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. are to stimulate the ambition of its members; to prepare them for the greatest usefulness in the cause of humanity, freedom, and dignity of the individual; to encourage the highest and noblest form of manhood; and to aid downtrodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic, and intellectual status.
|
Alpha Phi Omega's mission statement:
To strengthen the presence of Alpha Phi Omega on college campuses and among its members To support the spread of the Fraternity's principles and activities on college campuses and among its members To provide opportunities for its members and college students to develop effective leadership skills To promote fellowship among all people To provide service to humanity To further our acknowledged freedoms And although the Jaycees are not a GLO, I wanted to share the Jaycee creed with everyone. :) Jaycees seemed like a very natural progression for me after APO and the creed kind of explains it...the principles are very similar. WE BELIEVE... That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earth's great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life. There's a really good interpretation/explanation of the creed here: http://www.iljaycees.org/creed_interpreted.htm |

I will try to make my college, the Sigma Chi Fraternity, and my own chapter more honored by all men and women and more beloved and honestly respected by our own brothers. I say these words in all sincerity: That Sigma Chi has given me favor and distinction; that the bond of our fellowship is reciprocal; that I will endeavor to so build myself and so conduct myself that I will ever be a credit to our Fraternity. - George Ade, Purdue 1887 |

The Purpose of Zeta Tau Alpha:
The purpose of Zeta Tau Alpha is to intensify friendship, promote happiness among its members, to perform such deeds, and to mould such opinions as will conduce to the building up of a purer and nobler womanhood in the world. The Creed of Zeta Tau Alpha: To realize that within our grasp, in Zeta Tau Alpha, lies the opportunity to learn those things which will ever enrich and ennoble our lives; to be true to ourselves, to those within and without our circle; to think in terms of all mankind and our service in the world; to be steadfast, strong, and clean of heart and mind, remembering that since the thought is father to the deed, only that which we would have manifested in our experience should be entertained in thought; to find satisfaction in being, rather than seeming, thus strengthening in us the higher qualities of the spirit; to prepare for service and learn the nobility of serving, thereby earning the right to be served; to seek understanding that we might gain true wisdom; to look for the good in everyone; to see beauty, with its enriching influence; to be humble in success, and without bitterness in defeat; to have the welfare and harmony of the Fraternity at heart, striving ever to make our lives a symphony of high ideals, devotion to the right, the good, and the true, without a discordant note; remembering always that the foundation precept of Zeta Tau Alpha was love, “the greatest of all things.” -- Shirley Kreasan Strout |
Chi Omega Symphony
To live constantly above snobbery of word or deed; To place scholarship before social obligations and character before appearances; To be, in the best sense, democratic rather than "exclusive" and lovable rather than "popular"; To work earnestly, to speak kindly, to act sincerely, to choose thoughtfully that course which occassion and conscience demand; To be womanly always; To be discouraged never; In a word, to be loyal under any and all circumstances to my Fraternity and her highest teachings and to have her welfare ever at heart that she may be a symphony of high purpose and helpfulness in which there is no discordant note. |

The Creed of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity...
That all men are created free and equal. That no society of men can flourish unless members ofthat society are endowed with the opportunities and privileges of freedom. That freedom implies the elimination of prejudice. That the elimination of prejudice means a better understanding 'twixt* men. That it is incumbent upon me to fight for such freedom even with my life. That it is incumbent upon me in my personal life to be devoted to the highest standards of honesty and justice. That because my country is dedicated to the highest standards of freedom and justice for all men of all creeds I hereby pledge allegiance to my country, and to its national symbol. To believe in the life of love,
To walk in the way of honor, To serve in the light of truth, This is the life, the way and the light of Sigma Nu, This is the Creed of Our fraternity. (That's the short creed, the long one is about a page and a half long). |
The Mission of Tri Sigma
Sigma Sigma Sigma exists to provide a lifelong sorority experience for women.
In conjunction with the formation of this Mission, we reaffirm our commitment to the Sigma Sigma Sigma Declaration of Principles. These Principles elaborate on three basic tenets, which are the reasons for our existence as a Sisterhood. · To insure a perpetual bond of friendship · To develop strong womanly character · To promote high standards of conduct |
OUR REASON FOR BEING
The purposes for which this association is formed are: To foster education, to maintain charity, to promote patriotism. To encourage culture, to encourage high scholarship. To assist in the building of character, to promote college loyalties, To perpetuate friendships, to cement social ties within its membership. And to foster the maintenance of college homes by chapters for their undergraduate members. THE MISSION OF ALPHA SIGMA PHI FRATERNITY To Create and to Perpetuate Brotherhood Brotherhood is the development of lifelong human relationships based on respect, mutual love and support. Alpha Sigma Phi provides opportunities for its members to experience Brotherhood through the creation and maintenance of Chapters. By experiencing Brotherhood, the members of Alpha Sigma Phi grow stronger intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically and spiritually, thereby becoming more empowered to enrich society and to improve the quality of life. The chaotic state of moral and ethical values within our society has prompted many of our members to urge Alpha Sigma Phi to expand and strengthen the Brotherhood experience. In addition, increasing numbers of men desiring membership have expressed their eagerness to experience Brotherhood. In response, Alpha Sigma Phi will actively work to create the new chapters and to create an environment of respect, mutual love and support in each chapter. Further, in support of Our Reason for Being and our motto To Better The Man, Alpha Sigma Phi will provide programs and services that assist each member to:
CODE OF CONDUCT

I will respect the dignity of all persons, and therefore, I will not physically, psychologically or sexually abuse another human being.
I will respect the rights of property both of others and my own, and therefore, I will not abuse private or community property.
I will be a financially responsible individual.
I will not use nor support the use of illegal drugs.
I will not abuse nor support the abuse of alcohol.
I acknowledge that a clean, safe and attractive environment is essential to both physical and mental health -- therefore I will do all in my power to see that the chapter is properly cleaned and maintained.
I will achieve academic excellence.
I will encourage and support my Brothers in pursuing the ideals of this Code of Conduct.
|
The Mission Statement of Kappa Kappa Gamma
Kappa Kappa Gamma is an organization of women, which seeks for every member throughout her life bonds of friendship, mutual support, opportunities for self-growth, respect for intellectual development, and an understanding of and an allegiance to positive ethical principles. The following are not an official creed or symphony but are beautiful to us nonetheless. Kappa is...The contentment of friendships, but never the complacency of the clique. The encouragement of individual development, instead of strict conformity to the group. The curiosity to learn and to achieve, not limited to the quest for grades nor to a special time of life. The joy of serving others without the smugness of the do-gooder. The pride in a great heritage of a sound organization, but never the self-satisfaction of the status quo. Finally, Kappa is the ability to build on yesterday while doing today as a preparation for tomorrow. – The History of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity, 1870-1930 A Kappa Symphony Thou Kappa Kappa Gamma live each day in all our hearts And in our lives play most noble sympathetic parts The parts of sister, second mother, counsellor, true friend Of love's ideal to which we raise our eyes until the end Until the end. I think when passed beyond this little sphere We still shall see thy joyous shining light forever clear And hear in all the skies thy call of perfeft womanhood So God may say "on earth and here thou art a lasting Good" |
Phi Kappa Psi
I believe that Phi Kappa Psi is a brotherhood of honorable men, courteous and cultured, who pledge throughout their lives to be generous, compassionate, and loyal comrades;
I believe that I am honor bound to strive manfully for intellectual, moral, and spiritual excellence; to help and forgive my Brothers; to discharge promptly all just debts; to give aid and sympathy to all who are less fortunate; I believe that I am honor bound to strengthen my character and deepen my integrity; to counsel and guide my Brothers who stray from their obligations; to respect and emulate my Brothers who practice moderation in their manners and morals; to be ever mindful that loyalty to my Fraternity should not weaken loyalty to my college, but rather increase devotion to it, to my country, and to my God; I believe that to all I meet, wherever I go, I represent not only Phi Kappa Psi, but indeed the spirit of all fraternities; thus I must ever conduct myself so as to bring respect and honor not to myself alone, but also to my Fraternity; To the fulfillment of these beliefs, of these ideals, in the noble perfection of Phi Kappa Psi, I pledge my life and my sacred honor. Written by John Henry Frizzell, Massachusetts Alpha 1898, and Kent Christopher Owen, Indiana Beta 1958. Adopted by the 1964 Grand Arch Council. |

The Symphony of Alpha Chi Omega
To see beauty, even in the common things of life, To shed the light of love and friendship round me, To keep my life in tune with the world that I shall make no discords in the harmony of life, To strike on the lyre of the universe only the notes of happiness, of joy, of peace, To appreciate every little service rendered, To see and appreciate all that is noble in another, be her bade what it may, and to let my lyre send forth the cordsof love, unselfishness, sincerity. This is to be my symphony I love our symphony :) |

The Object of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia:
The Object of this Fraternity shall be for the development of the best and truest fraternal spirit; the mutual welfare and brotherhood of musical students; the advancement of music in America and a loyalty to the Alma Mater. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia does not have an official creed as such. However, the quote shown below is familiar to all Sinfonians -- learned by probationary members (pledges) and quoted by brothers. One might say that it is an unofficial creed or statement of our standards and goals. It came to us as the closing paragraph in a letter to the Brotherhood from Ossian E. Mills, "Father of Sinfonia" and Honorary Grand Supreme President for Life, in the 1912 FMA Annual. Many of us find it be a very meaningful standard. This it is to be a man of the highest type. To be and not seem; to do and not simply to talk; to have the right ideal, the true motive and patiently to transform conduct in accordance with it. |
To fill my days with satisfying activity
To find dominant beauty in art, literature, nature and friendships To know the peace and serenity of a divine faith To love life and joyously live each day to its ultimate good This is my creed in Alpha Sigma Alpha. |
"This truth comes to us more and more, the longer we live, that in what field, or in what uniform, or with what aims we do our duty, matters very little; or even what our duty is, great or small, splendid or obscure, only to find our duty certainly and somewhere, somehow do it faithfully, makes us good, strong, happy and useful, and tunes our lives into some feeble echo of the life of God."

A heritage that makes a fuller life. Gamma Phi Beta in the present bids Us strive for lasting values and ideals. Gamma Phi Beta in the days to come Will prove that fundamentals can endure. Therefore we shall embody in our lives The truths that make for finer womanhood. Once more we pledge a loyalty that means Adherence to all true and noble things; A learning that enriches all our days With magic gold that is forever ours; A labor that each hour will glorify The simple, common task, the common cause; A love that will be strong and great enough To encompass and pity all the world. |
Sigma Delta Tau:
"It shall be the purpose of this fraternal organization to form a close social and fraternal union of those of similar ideals and to foster, maintain and instill such ideals in the hearts of its members as will result in actions worthy of the highest precepts of true womanhood, democracy and humanity." The mission of Sigma Delta Tau is to enrich the college experience of women of similar ideals to build lasting friendships and to foster personal growth. Theta Nu Xi
Mission Statement
To promote leadership, multiculturalism, and self improvement through academic excellence, involvement in and service to the campus and community,as well as being living examples of sisterhood across different races, cultures, religions, backgrounds, and lifestyles. |
To bind men together in a brotherhood based upon eternal and immutable principles, with a bond as strong as right itself and as lasting as humanity; to know no North, no South, no East, no West, but to know man as man, to teach that true men the world over should stand together and contend for supremacy of good over evil; to teach, not politics, but morals; to foster, not partisanship, but the recognition of true merit wherever found; to have no narrower limits within which to work together for the elevation of man than the outlines of the world: these were the thoughts and hopes uppermost in the minds of the founders of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.
