Colors

Be honest..........is there a sorority colors that you dont like? I knew a local and few sororities that are pink and green - I like one sorority that was light blue and silver..... was kinda cool... I know there is meaning behind the colors but honestly the color ITSELF, what colors you dont like and do you really like your sorority colors?

moe.ron 08-23-2004 05:41 AM

It is not for anybody to second guess why somebody's color is such and such. to do so show a contempt for that particular organization.

AOIIalum 08-23-2004 06:38 AM

I love my sorority's color, it's so perfect that we only need one ;)

Honestly? I wouldn't dare question another GLO's colors. That's none of my business as a non-member. To me, it's about the same as insulting their founders! All outward symbols of a GLO are something that should be celebrated, because they are shared with the world. Besides, I'm sure there are plenty of girls who never cared about (insert any sorority's colors here) until they joined (insert sorority's name here).

The B Girl 08-23-2004 07:27 AM

Agree with Kristin. Before I entered college, my favorite colors were lt pink and blue. In fact, ALL of my bedroom stuff (bedspread, pillows, etc) was decorated in pink and blue the first day I got to school. But I didn't pledge Delta Gamma (great organization), even though those were my favorite colors. I didn't really have much red until I joined AOII. I love red/white now, because I love my organization and I know the meaning behind the colors.

Hi BabyP. I am sure there are lots of colors as a rule many people don't like. I can see this turning into a negative thread though if specific organizations are named. ;)

Kevin 08-23-2004 09:10 AM

I like all colors. Or hate them equally. It just depends on how bad the hangover is. ;)

KillarneyRose 08-23-2004 09:15 AM

What's the next thread going to be?

"Which GLO crests do you think are most unaesthetic?"
"Which sorority has the most boring pref ceremony?"
"Any particular badges you think are really ugly?"

33girl 08-23-2004 09:44 AM

I can't believe Beta Chi Omega uses puce and chartreuse as their colors. That's just foul.

ECUJacob 08-23-2004 08:28 PM

Beta colors...

As a brother of Beta Theta Pi, you can believe we are often asked to "defend" or explain our colors. "Delicate shades of pink and blue" aren't exactly popular choices. But, sunrises and sunsets are spectacular things to watch, and I'm damn proud to wear our colors every chance I get.

I totally agree...every sun set is a DG sunset and I watch in awe...

That1LoudChick 08-23-2004 09:34 PM

I hated the color coral! ...Until I found out what it meant to my old (chapter died) local sorority! After I found out the meaning, I realized how good I look in coral! :D

Phi Psi was on Chapin street when Beta was a pup
Phi Psi will be on Chapin street when Beta's busted up.
Their colors are of pink and blue,
A baby pink and a baby blue.
Now doesn't that sound sweet to you
For Beta-Theta-Pi.

As we go marching
And the band begins to P-L-A-Y,
You can hear the people shouting:
"The raggedy-eyed Phi Psi's are out again."

(sorry- first thing that came to mind was this song)

astroAPhi 08-23-2004 10:07 PM

Wow, how sweet and thoughtful of you.

If you knew it was inappropriate (as indicated by the "sorry"), then why post it???

I hope you aren't as big of an ass as this post would indicate. That was just an INCREDIBLY rude thing to post. Really...

BabyP 08-23-2004 10:26 PM

let me rephrase............what colors would you pick for your greek organization - lets say you can pick two or three colors. what would they be and what colors would they NOT be.

I love the colors our founders chose over 130 years ago: bronze, pink, and blue. No one should think "badly" of other organization's colors, because outsiders have NO idea the deep meaning behind the colors.

Our colors are chosen for a reason, and you shouldn't think of "new" colors for your organization

They would be colors that meant something to my organization, not just arbitrary colors out of the crayola box.

Speaking of crayolas, it would be a hoot to find a GLO with "Indian Red" (politically incorrect now, but one of my fav colors as a child) and "Salmon" as their colors. Or perhaps "Brick" and "Carnation Pink"?

IowaStatePhiPsi 08-23-2004 10:37 PM

Of course Phi Psi's original colours were lavendar and pink. They were changed in 1918 to Cardinal Red and Hunter Green.
When Woodrow Wilson died the original colors, pink and lavendar, were the only colors of flowers on his casket.

Quote:

George Smart in the Spring 1924 issue of The Shield wrote:

The New York Times, in its description of the funeral services of Woodrow Wilson, states that the casket was unornamented but on its top lay a spray of lavender orchids sent by men who had served in France during the war and placed there by Mrs. Wilson. The account also states that, as he passed the casket, the Reverend Robert E. Browning laid near the orchids two pink roses.
I wonder whether the men who sent the lavender flowers were Phi Psis. Perhaps not. The rector who placed the pink roses on the casket is not a Phi Psi. Doubtless this combination of the old colors, so dear to thousands of us, was purely accidental. However that may be, it was eminently fitting that the lavender and pink, which were the fraternity colors throughout almost the entire period of his membership, should be the only flowers to grace the casket of the great Phi Psi. That fact adds new glory to the history of lavender and pink in Phi Kappa Psi.

astroAPhi 08-23-2004 10:37 PM

Can we say cerulean? HAHA I love crayolas.

adpiucf 08-23-2004 10:41 PM

I don't think colors are relevant. It's the values behind the organization and its principles.

Colors are just... window dressing. Symbols to remind us of those values.

I'm ok with that. I like consistent values.

Well said.

AlphaSigOU 08-23-2004 11:32 PM

For Alpha Sigma Phi, the official colors are cardinal (red) and stone (gray). However, our coat of arms doesn't have a trace of cardinal anywhere. The stone color is replaced by the heraldic term "argent" (silver).

kandy36 08-24-2004 01:39 AM

people take things oh so seriously..

loosen up people its just a question..

anyways i understand that there are meanings behind colors of course but idk i think some color combos are foul..idk which ones tho lol..

I was coloring the other day with my nephew and some of the "alternative" names of the colors are interesting. But I do understand the need for the change. .

Instead of picking colors that way, you should pick a nail polish name. Some of the names are a bit out there, I wonder what kind of substance the design teams were taking when they come up with the names.

AOcutiePi4ever 08-24-2004 08:14 AM

you guys sort of weird me out. she was just asking what colors you dont like--- your personal preference. if saying you dont like a certain color is making someone else feel like they are dissing their GLO, that someone else has some serious sensitivity issues to deal with. it doesnt ALWAYS have to be pleasentville on this board! mentioning a color you dont like is not "mean", its just simply mentioning a color you dont like! you are NOT dissing a glo by saying you dont like a particular color. i for one, hate the color orange. i dont even know if there is a glo that has orange as one of its colors. and along those same lines, baby poo green and mustard yellow arent very high on my list of favorite colors either.

BabyP has a history of starting really negative threads about GLOs other than her own on this board.

She didn't ask what colors you don't like. If so, that would've been appropriate for chitchat, not greek life. She's asking what sorority's colors you don't like. Totally unnecessary negativity that leads to who's GLO is better argument type threads. Which there are a million of and always turn out ugly

YES.

It's a pattern that many of us here at GC have noticed, and frankly I think it's pretty sad.

AOIIalum 08-24-2004 09:00 AM

Co-sign, ditto, and yes indeed!

It's one thing to ask 'what colors you do and you don't like?' It's one thing to ask 'if you had to pick a sorority by color only, what would you pick and why?' She didn't, and it seems that many of her GLO related posts tend to be more negative. Sure, it's not always sunshine, rainbows and roses. But, I feel it's just like all of the other who's the best/what is XYZ like on your campus threads. Past history indicates that very little good--if any--good can come of them.

Well, Sigma Nu has black, white and gold.

MsCongeniality3 08-24-2004 09:28 AM

A sorority has colors of black and white: Lambda Psi Delta.

MsCongeniality3 08-24-2004 09:29 AM

This is not dissing an organization but I am not in favor of having colors of pink and purple. However, it is all about the organization and like said, colors are just symbolic and window dressing.

I think a lot of the negativity on these threads has to do with immaturity and lack of experience, and is often unintentional. As alums many of us are in our late 20's and beyond. I think back to when I was in undergrad and many of us acted the same way. A lot of it is a developmental issue mixed in with the environment we are in. We just didn't really have the internet back then!! I think that it is good for everyone to step up to the plate and point it out to the undergrads when we see negativity cropping up. Some people are just plain trouble makers too and that also needs to stay off the boards, that is what we can ALL do without. As an aside *again* there are already enough threads about the negativity and stereotypes of Greeklife and individual GLO's as well. Rant over.

I will co-sign because I feel this is 110% true.

And while we are speaking about nail polish colors... Sinful nailpolish has some pretty creative names for theirs. :)

Peaches-n-Cream 08-24-2004 12:59 PM

I like royal purple and pure gold. I remember when I was in college, I really liked pink and green so I bought a green sweatshirt with pink letters. :) I also bought a pink sweatshirt with cute pink teddy bear print letters.

pHiSiG cHiCkAdE 08-24-2004 02:03 PM

To be completely honest when it comes to colors I do not often wear my sororities colors (King Blue and Gold) unless I am wearing my sorority jacket. I like brighter colors. I am obsessed with pink and baby blue. But a color is just a color, it is the meaning behind the colors that matter. I buy sorority clothing in colors I like. Everyone seems to do that. No biggie. To be honest I appreciate my colors but I don't like them. You don't pick your sorority based on your fav. color. Know what I mean? I hope this doesn't come off wrong...
