Tommy Lee's new reality series looking for campus

Too real to be good
The University at Buffalo enjoyed some positive publicity when MTV visited two years ago to follow the experiences of a fraternity and sorority pledge class.

Despite that, UB said "no" to a new reality show, a series in which cameras will follow a well-known Hollywood celebrity as he enrolls in college and takes three or four classes per week.

"He will also do what normal college students do: root for the football team, study in the quad and have some good ol' fashioned college fun," said an e-mail sent by the show's producer to UB and other colleges around the country.

The e-mail didn't name the celebrity student, but UB soon discovered who it was: Tommy Lee, the tattoo-loving, hard-living rock star and ex-husband of Baywatch beauty Pamela Anderson Lee.

Given Lee's previous video appearance, an X-rated romp with Pamela, UB's decision may be a wise one.

Peaches-n-Cream 08-22-2004 11:33 PM

Was it really positive publicity for Buffalo when MTV was there?

It would be funny to show up to class and sit next to Tommy Lee and his tattoos.

CatStarESP4 08-23-2004 03:25 AM

After SL2 and FL1, does UB really need more aggravation?

I wonder if he will get a degree out of this.

   :o

I would love to be a fly on the wall when he'd go in for the interview.

I wonder if he'll pledge :p

*bump*

Did anyone watch this tonight?

Alpha Sig Scott 08-16-2005 10:15 PM

I watched it. Students looked at Tommy like he was some kind of fossil from the dim 80s.

Watching him try out for the marching band was funny. A drummer who can't drum. Hilarious.

WCUgirl 08-16-2005 10:34 PM

I thought it was cute -- it definitely made me chuckle quite a bit.

His roommate is kinda' dorky. :p

Anyone have any idea what sorority the "hot tutor" is in?

ISUKappa 08-16-2005 10:52 PM

I watched it. I thought it was pretty funny, he was so clueless in class. Dang, I would have a hard time in the Nebraska marching band. 7:00 am practice every day? Ouch!

layla2728 08-16-2005 11:35 PM

the show's site (http://www.nbc.com/nbc/Tommy_Lee) doesn't say what sorority the tutor is in, but the roommate is in Delta Tau Delta, according to his profile.

sugar and spice 08-16-2005 11:40 PM

Paging Kiki to this thread . . .

The "hot tutor" graduated from her high school, so maybe she knows?

DolphinChicaDDD 08-17-2005 08:27 AM

And this is why all chapters should have a website with members names...so we can stalk them.

J/K

The show made me laugh. I'll probably watch it again.

Xylochick216 08-17-2005 09:16 AM

I read this morning that the tutor is a Gamma Phi Beta.

AOII_LB93 08-17-2005 10:59 AM

I hope that UNL got a buttload of money for his appearance there, because man, makes me wonder about the institution of education.;)

I agree. Pretty lacking in social value, but fun anyway.

Brother Delt does look a little dorky, but read his high school and college "resume" and I think you'll see why we pledged him. Pretty impressive.

And, of course, your making an assumption that every "hot" woman at Nebraska is in a sorority.

She might be one of those Gamma Delta Iotas. (GDI)

I think the roommate looks like Eddie Kay Thomas who played Finch in American Pie.

the dorky roommate looks like a mix of my prom date from high school and ken jennings the jeporady winner

tunatartare 08-18-2005 09:26 AM

That must be every parent's dream: having your son share a room with Tommy Lee while in college.

Betarulz! 08-19-2005 11:10 PM

Okay...

First, yes, Tommy's tutor is a Gamma Phi. She did end up getting into med school and is one of my M1 Classmate at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha. I've known her since freshman year. Despite Tommy's obsession with her, and any sort of "created" storyline that they hooked up, they absolutely 100% did not. She has been dating a football player for over 2 years now (the guy who threw the pass to Eric Crouch to beat Oklahoma in 2001 actually). On top of that she is a really, really sweet girl, who really is very intelligent. Unfortunately, she has been getting a lot of shit from the Med Center about her involvement in the show, all the while, UNL is promoting her involvement...I know it doesn't make sense.

Second, Tommy's roommate is a Delt. I worked with him at Old Chicago, and he is an awesome kid. Super, super nice. I also know his gf pretty well too (formerly a Kappa Delta). Matt is a super Greek as well, involved in IFC and has done a lot of outside research on the greek system on his own (it was something we talked about a lot).

Ironically, neither of these two main players in the show even went to the open casting call. Both were found by producers in different places. Matt was a doorman at one of the bars in Lincoln, and Natalie was actually walking out on campus (I heard they caught her coming out of the chemistry building).

AS FAR AS I KNOW...the University did not get any money from the producers or NBC for being the stage of this show. However, I've heard estimates that the six episode run of the show is being estimated at somewhere between 200-250 million dollars in free advertising for UNL. As a UNL alum, I may be biased, but the University itself looks great, most of the people have seem really nice - if a little starstruck - and Tommy is the only one embarassing himself. If you were a HS student who happened to be watching, do you think that you might look at Nebraska at least a little, even if you had never thought about the place before? Maybe.

It will be interesting to see what the end result will be, and how UNL and it's constituents proceed from being known as "the place that let Tommy Lee go to school" but I don't think it will be as bad as most people expect, or as good as some people are predicting.

If you have more questions about the show, I'll probably be able to answer them, so just fire away.

WCUgirl 08-19-2005 11:12 PM

One article I read said that UNL has no record of Tommy being enrolled in any classes. I just assumed that meant he's just showing up to class and acting like he's studying so that they can film a show about it.

tommy lee was on our local radio station this past week promoting his new show. one of radio djs wanted to know if he went to parties and stuff. tommy said that he ended up rushing/pledging a fraternity. they made him wash dishes and other things. he decided it wasnt for him and started his own house. i think he called it "house of tommy." so, i guess we will find out it this is all true.

From what I know about University Policy, if you enroll and then drop out before receiving actual grades (ie end of the semester), I don't think you end up with an actual academic transcript...Tommy was only here for about 8 weeks, and two of those weeks he was out promoting his book, so it was more like 6.

Obviously for a show like this certain liberties were taken, but he really did actually study, and take tests. He really did try to perform well so it's not all just an act.

The fraternity he starts will be The house of Lee. I'm pretty sure that any sort of fraternity scenes of him at a supposed fraternity house will be staged.

And wasn't Matt a past IFC President?

And as a UNL grad school alum, I too may be biased. Regardless, I totally agree that UNL (campus and community) looks great.

DeltAlum 08-21-2005 05:36 PM

Truth is that it's a pretty nice campus. I've visited a number of times.

I also visited the Delt Shelter there several times, and stayed there for a few days one summer.

The last time was Sept. 10, 2001 -- the day before 9-11. The timing might have been right so maybe I met Brother Matt. I was a guest for dinner and Ritual that evening.

Of course it's a big chapter and I certainly don't remember.

I'm not sure...he might have been.

Last night's show I had to laugh at alot. One, all the kids Tommy raced on the track, were just regular students...no actual track team members. Another kid I used to work with was one of the runners.

I also thought that it was kind of ridiculous that they edited shots of the fans during the game, to make it look like we were cheering the band at halftime...especially showing the balloon launch. That tradition is done when Nebraska scores their first points of the game - a lot of times student groups will sell balloons for a $1 before games as a fundraiser.

One of Natalie's friends standing next to her at the football games is another long time friend, and the other girl was the little sister of one of the guys in Beta who rushed me.

I definitely think that this show was better as a whole for UNL, b/c it seemed less focused on the reactions of people on campus to Tommy being there and more on him trying to make a fool of himself...at least he made the band.

We interrupt this program for a Tommy random:

I just wanted to say that I really like Tommy's new song and video.

Ok now back to your regularly scheduled programming already in progress.

:)

Okay, I'm interested to know during what month that football game took place. They looked cold! I'm hoping it was at least October...

Reality TV...it's what the producers want to make it, not what it is in reality! Producers can edit to make someone look any way they want (my personal opinion). Besides... with a resume like Matt's who WOULDN'T want him as their brother? Glad to have you tell us about the REAL Matt!

A great Delt from a really outstanding chapter -- winner of more Hugh Shields Awards (highest award a Delt Chapter can win) than any other I can name.

RedRoseSAI 08-30-2005 10:40 AM

I though it was so cute how happy Tommy was to be playing with the marching band. He had a big smile on his face the whole time. Good marching band publicity. :)

Betarulz! 09-06-2005 11:29 PM

Tonight's episode sucked.

Why the assistant Athletic director was a disciplinarian I don't get.

Likewise with Tommy completing a project for a class he's not enrolled in. (He was enrolled in Chemistry, Horticulture, Native American Lit).

Third, "hard" punishment by working in food service. Surely there could have been a much better story line...something about him needing to get a job or something.

The severely edited drama between Natalie and that other girl...weird.

epsilon99 09-07-2005 11:00 AM

Yeah, I watched it because nothing else was on and I thought the first two episodes were much stronger...last night's was really bad.
