Another University of Texas rush story
My daughter is going through rush at Texas. I will try to post a rush thread as best I can from what she tells me. Today everyone had the first round of parties. They started at 9:30 and finish at 7:30 tonight. A long day!!! I have been wondering how it was going and her brother who lives in Austin just called to say he drove through west campus after work and just happened to see her waiting for her next party. She said she was having fun and that it wan't as bad as I had said. ( I had told her she has never been as tired, mentally and physically as she will be during rush) Her brother said he just laughed to himself and thought "It is only the first day." Hopefully she will call tonight and I can post some more.

Good luck to your daughter!

DAY 2
Well, we survived the first round of parties! When I talked to my daughter last night she was tired and said "everybody was so nice" and that she had a great time.
This morning we found out she was invited back to 13 parties!! I am very proud of her. We are from a small town and the only girls she knows in sororities are the ones she has met this spring and summer when visiting the campus. Although I was a Gamma Phi umpteen years ago, and made sure she had recs for most of the sororities. She elected to only go to six parties even though she could have gone to eight. She will go back this afternoon and find out her schedule. There are four parties tonight and four tomorrow monring. When I find our her schedule I will give more info on each sorority. The only advice I gave her today was to have a list of questions to use if there is a lag in the conversation. (And we all know there will be!! Even the girls we think will never run out of things to say generally do at some time during rush!! LOL) And to make sure each group knows how excited she is to be invited back. Well, more waiting. I had forgotten that part about rush. Rush, rush, rush,....wait, wait, wait. To UTEXAGIRL - hope you and my daughter get to meet after this is over. Maybe in the same pledge class. Who knows? |
I'm glad she had a good time! Are you still active in Gamma Phi?
|
congrats for surviving day 1!
|
My daughter just called and she is all concerned about her Pref dress. It is a color, not black. She said that everyone else is wearing black. I told her not to worry, that after Pref when the actives are talking about her and someone is saying "Which girl?" they can say "You know - the girl who was wearing the cute "color" dress." She doesn't want them to say "You know - the girl who was wearing the black dress" and for someone to say "Which girl in a black dress - they all had on black dresses!" Oh well, I did tell her that if she found a dynamite black dress we would talk about it.
You know I thought I was prepared for this - the wait and see, but I have to admit it is more nerveracking than I imagined. And I don't remember it taking so many days, but I am sure it did. Just seems faster when you are going through it. LOL Xylochick216 - no I am not active in Gamma Phi. I live in a small town and there are not any alumnae groups around here. And only a couple of Gamma Phi chapters in this part of the country. Although I did see where Gamma Phi colonized at Texas A&M last year. Maybe someday when my youngest daughter gets out of school. |
I think you gave your daughter wonderful advice. I think she will stand out more wearing a non-black preference dress. It will definitely help the sisters remember her!
:D |
Way to go against the norm......with a colored dress. Sounds like something I would do.......
|
My daughter refused to even look at black dresses because everyone else will be wearing them.
I'm sure your daughter will shine no matter what color she's wearing! |
My dress for pref was this REALLY pretty dark pink color and I remember loving it but being TERRIFIED that AOII/ZTA(where I preffed) would think I wanted Phi Mu!! Luckily, they all just loved the dress and one of my new sisters actually wore it to semi formal!!
I think you gave GREAT advice!! |
Minor problem - the girls were supposed to get their schedules for Period 1 today at 3:00 and the parties were going to start at 5:00. When the pnm's arrived they were told there was a minor problem with the schedules, so they waited for about an hour before they were sent home. Now they are supposed to get a phone call when the schedules are ready and the parties have been pushed back to 6:00. Then they will have to walk over to campus, get their schedule and then go straight to their first party. Ah, the joys of the chaos of rush!!!
So here are the sororities - Alpha Chi Omega Alpha Delta Pi Alpha Epsilon Phi Ahpha Phi Alpha Xi Delta Chi Omega Delta Delta Delta Delta Gamma Kappa Alpha Theta Kappa Delta Kappa Kappa Gamma Pi Beta Phi Sigma Delta Tau Zeta Tau Alpha And here are my names for the six she has chosen to attend - all names have to do with life on campus - Spurs Bevo Cowboys Horns Guadelupe The Tower The parties are supposed to be tonight and tomorrow morning, so I will post as she calls and updates me. |
good good luck to her...
may all be happy |
My daughter called and she has finished the first group of Period 1 parties. The second half will be tomorrow morning. I asked her who she liked and what she remembered about each party and what she wrote down. She said there isn't time to write anything down between parties because you are too busy running to your next house.
So if we had it to do all over again, I think I would buy her one of those inexpensive voice recorders so she could walk and talk and record her thoughts. Anyway, I will let you know about all her Period 1 parties tomorrow afternoon. |
thanks for keeping us posted!!
a little voice recorder is a good idea! hindsight is always 20/20 ! anyhow, i hope she had a great time :) |
Woo Hoo another rush thread.
Your daughter sounds like she is having an incredible time. I know that she will find her home. Post with an update as soon as you can. Question: When is bid day? |
The second half of Period 1 parties end today at 1:00.Then they have the rest of the day off.
Convocation will be at 8:00 Sunday and they should get their schedules at 3:00 Sunday afternoon. Unless they have computer problems like they did yesterday. Period 2 parties will be Sunday night from 5:00 until 9:45. They can go to up to 5 parties. Convocation will then be Monday at 12:00 with schedules for Pref being handed out at 5:00. Pref will start at 6:30 and go until 10:00. You can attend up to 3 events. Bid day will be Tuesday at 3:00. Classes start Wednesday morning. I am nervous about this round of cuts. I had long talks with my daughter about how tough/competitive rush is at UT and I think she was prepared. But then she gets invited back to 13 out of 14 and I think in her mind she is saying "this isn't so tough/competitive". I hope this next round go well. The one good thing is that so far she has not fallen off the deep end over one sorority. She has several she likes, but no one she is totally in love with. (Of course, when she calls this afternoon that may have changed!!) |
She is finished with Period 1 -
Guadalupe - She likes this house - girls were very nice and the conversation flowed Tower - This is not her favorite. She did not feel at home here even on her first day, but the girl that rushed her was very sweet and she felt liked she had to go back. Cowboys - She did not feel good about this group after the first day, but decided to give them a second chance and really liked them after Period 1. Spurs - This is probably her favorite group right now, but only by a little bit. Bevo - Another group she was unsure about, but really enjoyed this round. Horns - She liked this group after the first day, and she still does, but they are not way ahead. She seems to be following my advice to fall in love with three. Let's hope the next round goes as well. |
All this talk about the Tower, Bevo, and Guadalupe is making me homesick for Austin in the fall! Glad she is having a good time - this is a fun thread.:)
|
Sounds like she is having a great time :) ... I wonder if SDT is still in the running....
|
aw, I hope it goes great for her!
|
good luck to you both on the next step.

At my school you didn't have a choice-- even if from the beginning you only liked one-- you had to follow the rounds from 5 to 4 to 2.....
ETA: Unless you were cut and could not go to as many houses required |

She made it through Period 1. She was invited back to four of the six houses. Of the two that cut her, she was planning to cut one of them and the other one she liked, but was not in love with.
Cowboys - This is the group that has been a slow start. Everytime she sees them she likes them more and more. Spurs - This is the front leader right now. She really likes these girls and they seem to be rushing her pretty hard. Horns - She has liked these girls all along and they continue to be a favorite. Guadalupe - She also likes these girls and feels very comfortable with them. If they all invite her back to Pref, I think she will have a very hard time deciding who to choose. I am really proud of her. For the past six months I have been telling her to fall in love with three sororities during rush and to not care which one she gets. Even though the Spurs are the front runners, she says she can see herself in any of the four. She realizes that they all have great girls and she will have a great experience. - I guess all that "preaching" I did must have registered!! Either that or she is telling me this so I won't be worried about her getting hurt!! Who knows?:) LOL |
i hope she has another good night!
|
YAY!!!
Best wishes to your daughter!!! |
Best of luck to your daughter! I think in some ways it's harder on the moms than the rushees. My oldest daughter is only 7 but I can't imagine someone cutting my sweetie!
