JocelynC :
That is so awesome. Realizing how many chapters we have, had, and are begining just is inspiring! Last year for recruitment we had a shirt that was the Cheers logo with "Where Everyone Knows Your Name" and at the time we listed 107 chapters...the shirt was amazing and people we so surprized to see how many places have been blessed with the Sigma spirit ;) I wonder if any of the closed chapters would ever open up again? I am just interested in figuring out the expansion strategy of Sigma. It seems that a lot of the recent chapters are located at small colleges (mine included - Ursinus has less than 1400 students), and it would be interesting to see why Sigma is going more toward the smaller schools as opposed to the larger ones. Anyone have any thoughts? heart, Jessica |
what's so awesome is that we are still colonizing so actively!!!! we have no where to go but up!!!!
|
Okay - I found out that Psi isn't closed after all.
|
Yeah Psi chapter's not closed because I'm a member of it haha ;)

Embry-Riddle
Hello from the Embry-Riddle Colony. I heard rumblings of what is up with us, so...
We were to be installed on April 2nd, but grade reports were slow in coming for some reason and we ended up only having about a week from the vote to the banquet, so too much planning to do. We decided that we should tell Nationals we would rather do it in the Fall so we can make it an even more memorable event rather than thrown together. Also, our numbers were on the low side staying steady between 24 and 26 with people transferring out and our open recruitment bringing more women in. We are hoping to have the banquet in September, early October. I am so excited about being initiated that I almost cry everytime I think about it! We worked our tails off for this whole school year and are definately excited about the fall. When it gets closer to time, I will post an invite to the banquet to any Sigmas in the area! Anyhow, that's my update on Riddle. And *snaps* to making the whole huge list! Visit our website made by the lovely Jackie at www.freewebs.com/sigmasigmasigma :D |

Any news on the IU chapter effort? I definitely think expansion is needed there, considering only half the women who rush get a bid. The big hurdle is finding land for a house...there really isn't much, if any, to be had. The chapter at IU closed at the end of the 1993-1994 school year after a few unsuccessful rushes. Alpha Sigma Alpha and Sigma Kappa also closed that year for the same reason. (Tri-Sigma had 35 or so members, Sigma Kappa had 62 and ASA had under 20, most of the chapters at IU have well over 100 members.) There was a story about that in the IU yearbook from that year. One tidbit: when the closing of the chapter was announced, the pledges (they were still pledges back then!) were given the choice to go through and be initiated, or to drop and be able to rerush another sorority in the fall. (The decision was made something like two weeks into the semester) Everyone chose to initiate, no one dropped. That really says something about Sigma sisterhood. :) |
There was a presentation at IU in 2002-03 about recolonization. I was a member of the group interested in becoming a colony.
Representatives from Headquarters gave a presentation to the current greek community, then had another for the women interested in Tri Sigma. We turned in a list of our contact information, but unfortunately never heard anything further. All of the members of that group have since graduated. IU does need another chapter or two because there are so many deserving women who don't get bids because of quotas. |
I didn't join another sorority. I was a sophomore at the time and recruitment had already ended. IU is so competitive that trying to rush as a junior would have been fruitless.
I graduated last December and I've just been really focused on trying to find a job, so I haven't even thought about alumni initiation. It definitely would have been nice to hear what happened. We didn't try to contact the IU greek office because they had been kind-of disorganized and unhelpful before the presentation; plus, the Sigma ladies told us they would update us. *shrug* |
Psi
Psi Chapter is most certainly not closed and never ever has been!!! I know, I'm in it!
To answer whoever posed the question, "Why does Sigma go for smaller schools?" Answer: Because at smaller schools, everyone is greek, thus the greek system flourishes there. Aside from southern schools, you aren't going to find a whole lot of big schools with big greek life. Marshall University has over 15,000 students and less the 5% are greek. |
I don't know if anyone mentioned this but the Grand Valley chapter is closed.
|
Thanks for all the corrections/updates!
|
Edited: Unfortunately, Alpha Gamma chapter @ Ft. Hays State (KS) has closed. See the Winter Triangle for more information.

Small schools
Another reason Sigma chapters tend to me at small schools is because when we initially began colonizing, we went to teacher schools. Obviously these were smaller than most normal university. An example of this is my chapter, Alpha Chi, which is at Murray State University. Murray was originally a teacher's college and we were the first social greek organization to be founded there in January 1942.

The JWU colony has closed. See spring Triangle for more info.

I'm pleased to announce our newest colonization @ the University of Wisconsin-Parkside!
|
Unfortunately, Eta Delta (NC Wesleyan) has closed, see Fall Triangle for further information.
|
I'm pleased to announce that this weekend, the Lynchburg College colony will be installed as the Eta Upsilon chapter of Tri Sigma! Congratulations to these women!
|
Some schools in Missouri have changed names, so I edited this list to reflect those changes:
Central Missouri State University is now University of Central Missouri. (Nu chapter) Southwest Missouri State is now Missouri State University.(Beta Beta chapter) |
convention news
Just got back from convention yesterday.
Tri Sigma will have 2 new colonies in the fall and 2 redevelopments. Women from the schools for the colonies attended convention. I know Pratt in New York will be one of them. I need to go through all my information to get the other school. |

Edited to add the newest colony at Pratt Institue!
I just realized that we are almost to Theta in our chapter designations! |
Unfortunately, our UW-Parkside colony is closed. See the Winter 2007 Triangle for more info.
|
Unfortunately, the Beta Beta chapter (MO State) has been closed. Details will most likely appear in the Spring Triangle.

sad news
It is with regret that the Executive Council of Sigma Sigma Sigma accepts the decision of our Alpha Nu Chapter at Southern Illinois University to relinquish their chapter charter. The chapter will be placed on our inactive chapter roster effective April 20, 2008. All collegiate members in good standing will be granted alumnae status and may assume the rights, privileges and responsibilities of alumnae membership.
OH the tears. :( |

How sad to lose another chapter, especially on Founders Day *sadface Hope they will be able to regroup and come back stronger than ever in the future! |
Oh, I'm so sad...
I hope we can regroup there, too! I hope we can start adding and re-inviting more chapters to that chapter roll soon, too... |
Props to the awesome thread. I was a legacy, but my campus didn't have an active chapter anymore once I got there, so I chose another GLO. Still, kudos to keeping up with your chapters like this!
