Know your history and policies

Please know your sorority/fraternity policies and history before spouting off half-truths and urban myths.

Don't tell everyone XYZ is your "brother fraternity/sister sorority" just because a lot of you hang out there or date them.

Don't tell people your GLO is one of the largest in the US when it's not. It's called the Internet. People can look things up and know you're BSing them.

Don't repeat the "pin on the moon" and "brothel" myths. They simply aren't true.

Yes, maybe Brooke Shields is your sister...but it's not THAT Brooke Shields. This is where a lot of the fake "famous Greeks" come from.

Whew, that feels better.

kddani 08-17-2004 03:29 PM

thank you, you always know how to say things!

Kevin 08-17-2004 04:18 PM

Whitedaisy needs to turn that into a banner and John needs to affix the banner to the main page.

angelove 08-17-2004 04:35 PM

Thanks 33!

Another tip: If you're posting "famous XYZs" on your chapter's website, but don't know what chapter Susan Lucci/Heather Locklear/Britney Spears/Hillary Duff is from, here's a clue - maybe she really wasn't an XYZ! If she's not on your nationals list, there's another clue.

Sorry for the rant, but this really drives me crazy.

Sister Havana 08-17-2004 04:38 PM

Just because you read it in Pledged does not mean it's true!

(This had to be said. :D )

Not to mention "Mrs. Hall," "Mrs. Wrigley," "Mrs. Campbell," and especially the much-mentioned "Betty Crocker." I hate to break it to you, but Betty Crocker of cake mix and cookbook fame was and is an advertising gimmick, not a person.

And if your GLO had a part-time something-or-other -- consultant / advisor / whatever -- who worked for your GLO west of the Mississippi in the early days and was the first such fraternity or sorority official west of Illinois to be reimbursed monthly by check for BOTH travel and meals . . . well, firsts are important, but some firsts are harder than others for the general public to care about :).

SmartBlondeGPhB 08-17-2004 06:33 PM

VERY good post.............

Look at it this way, would you want someone coming after you and publicly PROVING you wrong? If not, then you need to be sure of your facts before you say anything.

Tom Earp 08-17-2004 06:47 PM

Ah, rumors run rampant on Internet.:)

Yes LXA have had many Well know People as many of us have had in each Organization of ours.

Two of the wildest that I have had:

Harry Truman Who I knew and Robert Urich who I slapped on the back at a Golf Tourny I was playing in and did not realize at the time were LXA Brothers.

Just Check National Web Sites before posting.

Hell, I was so suprised of how many were listed. Kenney Chesney for one, E Tenn.

Oh Larry Brown with the sucky Olympic BB Team!
:(

That's a pet peeve of mine, too. I saw a number of websites claiming that the actress Elisabeth Shue was a Pi Phi, but there's never been a Pi Phi chapter at her alma mater, Harvard. Get your facts right, everyone!

Also: bust out the spell check on your chapter's web site. Nothing makes you look ditzier than a link to your "Calender."

PhiPsiRuss 08-17-2004 07:45 PM

I read where one young woman claimed that Martha Stewart was in her GLO. Martha Stewart went to Barnard when there were no NPC options for Barnard Women.

I should point out, however, that it is true that Moses, Buddha, Beethoven, and Genghis Khan were all Phi Psis. I just don't remember which chapters.

ETA George Washington and John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt were also Phi Psis. I forgot about them. :)

Sorry, AEPi claims Moses. In return we give Phi Psi Mohammed Al-Sadr.

One of our options for recruitment shirts was the whole "We sent a woman to the moon... (insert Phi Mu's astronaut)" Well one part of that was D Phi E and Bette Midler. Thanks to GC I squashed the chance of embarrassment. It ain't their fault... well actually it was our Panhel Advisor (an awesome DZ!) but sometimes u don't know when to believe rumors or not.

It's funny. I have heard from so many people that so and so famous person is an XYZ including Bette Midler and Donna Karan are DPhiEs. I figure if they are not on the international website, they aren't DPhiEs. One person who wasn't a DPhiE insisted Donna Karan is. She heard it from someone who knew a DPhiE at NYU. I guess that's how rumors get started. Shrug.

Anyway what's the big deal about famous sisters and alumnae? It's not like they will show up at your chapter for a mixer one night when they are free.

I keep hearing Bette Midler over and over again, and I'm 100% certain that she attended the University of Hawaii for at least two years. The Greek system was already established there with the local sororities, but I know for sure she wasn't a part of it. She left school to move to New York immediately after her sophomore year.

Even though we did have an astonaut, I hope to never see her name on a recruitment shirt...............that would just be sick (since she died in the Columbia disaster).

But yes, what is the big deal............

shadokat 08-18-2004 10:12 AM

You're absolutely right OTW. Bette went to the University of Hawaii, and never finished, and she is not a D Phi E. Cracks me up...never heard the Donna Karan one...that's a riot!! :)

This chick was adamant about it. "I have a friend who knows a D Phi E from NYU who told my friend that Donna Karan was a sister from that chapter." She had proof! Apparently, the chapter used to receive free DK clothes and stuff. I have no idea if that's true or not so I said that maybe an alumna worked for Donna Karan. She still insisted. I didn't want to argue with her so I said that I'd check the website. It was kind of weird.

I honestly didn't know - how tragic!

PM_Mama00 08-18-2004 01:10 PM

What about that guy from Nantucket? Wasn't he in a fraternity?

agzg 08-18-2004 01:44 PM

This thread is cracking me up!

I keep seeing in places that Carole King is an AGD... however I don't know for sure. She IS an awesome songwriter though.

My friend keeps claiming that God is a Pike.

Too bad God's a woman and She had to be AGD!;)

shadokat 08-18-2004 02:07 PM

When did Donna Karan go to NYU? What years...compare them with their founding....I know they're a recol.

I keep seeing Anne Klein on ADPi lists. Ladies, she designed all that beautiful lion jewelry because she's a LEO, not an ADPi!!!

Unless she's been made an honorable sister while I was napping...

EEKappa 08-18-2004 02:37 PM

Does this mean that Mrs. Campbell is not a Kappa, and those fleur de lis on the soup cans are *gasp* meaningless?

But they told us that back in pledge education 20 years ago! I've heard it enough times that it must be true!!

:p

ROFLMAO... thank for the giggles I needed it.

DZRaider 08-18-2004 03:37 PM

Okay, so this is slightly embarrassing, but I'll post it anyway...

When I first pledged Delta Zeta, I was told that Betty Crocker was a DZ. Well, being the fiesty new member I was, I told my family, friends...like they cared or something! One day, I mentioned this to my dad...he started cracking up and told me that I needed to check my facts before i told anyone else. I was very offended, saying that I knew it was true. Well, about half an hour later, Daddy proudly walked into my bedroom and showed my an internet article stating that Betty Crocker was indeed made up!!! Learned my lesson, that's for sure!!!!

And I agree with everyone else...what is the bid deal????

I'm sure if Ms. King was one of us, she'd be listed under official Accomplished Alpha Gams on the IHQ site. :)

And yes, it's been noted before, God is indeed an Alpha Gam.

She went to Parson's School of Design in the late 60s and early 70s, not NYU. I just googled her and found that out. :)

Snicker.

EEKappa, You have got to be kidding -- you don't look nearly old enough to have been a pledge 20 years ago.

Also ...hmmmm . . . this is another reason why today's shorter new member periods make sense -- there's not enough time to pass along all the misinformation.

agzg 08-19-2004 09:32 AM

EEKappa 08-19-2004 02:07 PM

Best reason for the shortened new member period I've heard!

(Actually, it was 21 years ago, and we were also told that Candice Bergen was a Kappa. She pledged, but didn't initiate at Penn.)

Jealous? Besides I heard from a friend who dated this girl who's father works with a guy who's cousin was roommates with a Beta that Vanilla Ice is a Beta, so I'd think twice before knocking JJJS.
