"Trading Spaces"/"While You Were Out" Back-to-School
I know this may qualify for the entertainment forum, but I'm wondering if anyone watched "While You Were Out" and "Tradings Spaces" this past weekend. It was a "back-to-school" weekend. On "While You Were Out," they re-did a room in the Phi Delta Theta lodge at University of Richmond, and on "Trading Spaces" they re-did the dining rooms of the Delta Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta houses at Northwestern. Both showed Greeks in a very positive light.
On "Trading Spaces," both the Thetas and the DGs came across very positively. Frank (the designer) had no end of good things to say about how impressed he was with the DGs he worked with. And host Paige didn't fall into the "silly sorority girl" stereotype like she has in the past. But even better was "While You Were Out": host Evan Farmer had brothers reciting the "Cardinal Principles" of Phi Delta Theta, and he ended by saying that they usually work with families, but this time they were working with what was really a special kind of family -- a brotherhood. Really good PR for Greeks in general and for Phi Delt, DG and Theta in particular. |
I also watched both of these and have watched all of the greek episodes in the past...and I must say that these new episodes have been the best so far for greeks! I was just telling a woman who works here in my office about the episode-- she is a Delta Gamma and her daughter is a Kappa Alpha Theta! She excited to watch the rerun now! I am so proud of the way greeks were portrayed...and to add to what you said about Frank, it was so cute when he said he wants to know when they get married, etc. Go Trading Spaces-- and Go Greek!

Anybody know when that "Trading Spaces" episode will run again? I was out of the house last night and couldn't watch. Thanks!

I posted this in the DG forum in our trading spaces thread, but I'll post it here too:
No offense to the Theta's (since they were just following the designers instructions)...but the DG room was just horrible. I mean, by far the most ugly room I've seen on Trading Spaces. What were they thinking? The Theta room turned out beautiful, but the DG room looked so bad. Who thought that a purple/green color scheme was a good idea...and WHO PAINTS A piano white with silver glitter?!?!?!! You can't just CUT chair arms off...and the cloth on the floor was horrid. I feel so bad for the DG's at North Western...they must have had to work hard to re-do it...again. |
No offense either, but I was very displeased with the outcome of the DG room.
Who puts that silver fringe from your light fixtures?!?!? The stuffed animals???? Just like one of the DGs in the show said, 'I feel like I'm in a little kid's room.' I wonder if they left the room the way it was or did they make some adjustments?!?! |
We wondered about that too on the Theta forum, and one DG told us that they had already repainted it, since it was a weird lavendar color...I don't blame them! I'm sure they have made other adjustments, too.
|
Ditto on the DG room....really bad. The Theta room though was beautiful! I think Frank really enjoyed doing the sorority house :p
Did anyone else notice what Paige said during the key/paddle swap when the girls were hugging? "Oh, now they like eachother!" (Or something like that) and her and Ty hitting eachother on the butt with the paddles? That was pretty tasteless. Oh...that Phi Delta room was HORRIBLE! (Lime green walls and painted wood floors??WTF??)The AOPi's got the better deal in that trade! |

The epsiode with lime green walls was a re-run. That was hideous!!! I could barely stand to look at it the first time I saw it. Seeing it again was horrendous. What were they thinking???? Just like the guys said, "Looks like Austin Powers!" |
Kind of related -- I just saw an episode of Designers' Challenge on HGTV where they did a Chi Omega tv room. It was SO gorgeous!
|
I didn't like it when Paige and what's his face exchanged paddle hits with each other...other than that the Theta room was so pretty! The DG room, was a bit juvenille but I liked the light up letters, very neat!

Where can we see pictures of these rooms?

I'm at Northwestern, and some of my best friends are DGs. I was abroad so I haven't seen the kitchen in person, nor do I know if they've redone it, but I know they were all soooooo mad - my friend said it looked like an Easter basket had exploded in there!
I'll let everyone know in a few weeks how the DG kitchen looks up close and personal... and btw the piano was AWFUL! And don't even get me started on the stuffed animals... but on another note I know one of the DG girls and two of the Theta girls pretty well and they are all sooooo nice. |

Great, great, post and all. I'm quite addicted to the show, and I actually beat you to posting about it last week :P They'd been advertising their greek specials for about a week prior to them airing. Good stuff. Glad you posted again though, as my post has slid back to the 2nd page of posts in this section... ;_; |
a good weekend for greeks on tlc...all the workers did beautifully and did their groups proud. frank was consistent as he always is. laura not so. how sad it that.
|
yeah that designer sucks!!!! ah all the shows shes been on...shes always does a bag job! frank got it right with his design...classy, sophisticated, suitable for sorority and its mechanisms. the dg room was just one big purple bla! eek!

I loved the shirts the DGs were wearing when the whole chapter (or part of it) came down to help!!!!
|
I saw the episode and i agree that Ty and Paige swatting each other with the DG paddle was disrespectful and in bad taste. With that said I absolutely LOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVEEEEEED the Theta dining room. Those colors are beautiful together. It was so classy and sophisticated. Just like Theta's.
I was on the phone with my (blood) sister and she's not real knowleadgable (sp?) about greeks, but she agreed that the DG dining room was F-U-G-L-Y with a capital F. Those colors, what was she thinking. I almost died when she painted and glittered the piano....who does that???? The sparkly things hanging from the lights how more pre-teeny can u get. I personally wanted to cower in embarrasment for them. Delta Gammas deserve better than that , and the bad part of it is that they (DG's) had to pay for the re-paint themselves. If I'm not mistaken. Frank was so cute. He actually teared up when talking to Paige about "his" team. How cute was that. He really liked the girls and wants to keep in touch with them. I love Frank. He's one of my favorites |

I got to watch the Delta Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta T.S. today ^_^. |
Phew! The DG dining room unded up not only fugly, but completely tacky, juvenile, and inappropriate for a dining/chapter room. You could tell that the Thetas didn't like it from the beginning, and the DGs hated it in the end. I love purple, but who wants to look at purple walls while you're eating? It would make you feel sick. Maybe, MAYBE it would have been OK in a SSS or SK house, but unless there's a really good reason to paint the dining room purple, just don't.
I agree, though, that the students all came off very well -- they seemed to be mature and hard-working good sports. |

honestly, i think everything on trading spaces comes out tacky and gross. they are so worried about keeping things under budget that they end up buying really cheapy gross things and always end up painting nasty patterns and colors on the walls... i dont think ive ever seen anything on that show ive liked (i didnt see the dg/theta episode)
now queer eye for the straight guy? Thom the interior designer is amazing... |

I'm glad Greek Life and TS worked it out so the show could come to campus that week--it was near the end of spring quarter and everyone was fed up with finals and whatnot. I lived in a dorm in the middle of the sorority quad so I walked thru the set everytime I went to class. Everyone had stories about the show's crew and it seemed like everyone tried to one up each other everyday..."Did you see Frank hanging out at Theta?..." "No...but I got to meet Ty, did you?" "Got MY pic, did YOU?" etc... It's nice to know that each of the houses takes pride in keeping thier homes in great shape. Every house is beautiful and has a great history behind how each org. got its house. |
