In this thread, we admire cute outfits

Post links to some outfits you would recommend PNM's wear to recruitment events. If you want to get fancy, you could even label "when" she might wear them (IE: prefs, skit/video, philanthropy, etc.)

Got makeup or jewelry examples you would like to show? Post those links, too!

For Greek Forum, where you meet your recruitment counselor and group, I'd recommend khaki slacks/shorts/skirt and a simple top.

The philanthropy day round varies at schools. Please don't wear shorts or overalls, as they recommend. Overalls don't look flattering on anyone, unless you are 6 feet tall and all legs, without an ounce of fat. Opt for capris or a cute skirt that you can get up and down in easily (there may be some sitting on the floor and doing an easy craft project). Your school may give the PNM's matching tshirts for the philanthropy round.

Remember, keep your tummy, boobs and thighs covered! A strapless dress is fine as long is it looks tasteful and you drape a shawl or cardigan around your shoulders!

Remember, you are aiming for a classy look, slightly overdressed than what they recommend, and wear COLORS. You want to stand out among the crowd and wear clothes flattering to your body.

Also, keep in mind--- these are opinions of sisters of diff. sororities from all over North America. You need to consult the office of Greek Life at your university for what is appropriate. Some schools are more casual than others, etc. (My opinion is to overdress a little to stand out and look classy)

This shirt http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CTZZZZZZZ_.jpg with this skirt http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CMZZZZZZZ_.jpg would be a good combination- simple and classic, yet trendy. At Kent that would be a 3rd party outfit.

DawnDZ 08-10-2004 09:31 AM

That is a really cute skirt. Where did you find it?

adpiucf 08-10-2004 10:37 AM

No one is telling you to buy these, but here are some cute styles and colors that you can look at while shopping within your budget.

While all of these outfits are UBER cute, just remember to check with your own campus on what is appropriate :)

ditto. Some schools you may get laughed at for wearing a Lily. I could see it happening at my school ;) either that, or people would wonder why you're wearing you're grandma's dress. Not to make fun of people who wear Lily, but I hadn't ever heard of Lily until after I graduated.

And most college girls at my school can't afford Ann Taylor.

edited because i didn't even realize lily had only one L

Re: J Crew

I like the J. Crew dress.

I agree with shadokat and kddani. Check with your schools regarding appropriate outfits for rush. I am afraid that some PNMs will see this thread and run out and buy the exact same outfits that are posted here. These outfits are just suggestions. :)

Have to agree with this sentiment......I had no idea what a Lily Pulitzer dress was until about a year ago and at the school I went to you would stand out like a severely sore thumb (and not just because we have rush in Jan).

Black bottoms (skirt or slacks) always look slimming and will look very sharp when paired with a colorful top!

StumpsGirl 08-11-2004 11:40 AM

about checking for whats appropriate...

I know at my school (very casual, southern arkansas) we had a very informal rush and each group had a series of "theme" parties. (Some examples are "Slumber Party with the XYZ's" and then "Hayride with the ABC's") We were all encouraged to wear what was in the theme. No one was forced but it made for some fun conversations. One girl wore Oreo cookie pj's because her nickname was oreo. Another girl wore hand painted cowboy boots at the hayride and EVERYONE loved to ask about them. So even though these outfits make me very happy because I am a shop-a-holic to the core I would most definitely wait until the info meeting or open house before I buy anything suggested. Or if you have a website like the one's I have seen (which are THE GREATEST idea ever) that shows what to wear at certain schools.

Just my suggestion...

PREF WEAR

Just be forwarned, that as much as I hate to make generalizations, every sorority I know of on every campus I am familiar with wears black dresses for prefs.

Sometimes PNMs hear this and freak out that they have to wear black. Sometimes PNMs hear this and freak out that they can't wear black. On most campuses, there is not a hard and fast rule, and if you go by your rush guide, don't get thrown by what the sisters may/may not be wearing.

Also, on some campuses (mine included) you get matching t-shirts for philanthropy round or open houses, and wearing these with jeans or shorts and gym shoes is just fine. However, the following things are NOT appropriate, even in a casual rush (GCers please correct me if you know of a rush where this is okay):

--sweatbands
--anything that looks like pajamas/sweatpants
--baseball caps/bucket hats
--bizarre alterations of the t-shirt you have been given

These are all things that I have seen and wondered about, and in a rush like U of Illinois, that is tough.

A girl I work with was an AOPi at either Georgia or Georgia State and they wore red at pref! That sould really make an impression on a girl to walk into a room full of red wouldn't it? I think that would be kinda cool really. She rushed back in the late 80's or early 90's or something, but she said most of the sororities then wore their "colors" at pref. DZ wore dark green, Phi Mu wore pink, etc... I thought it sounded great!

leesek 08-21-2004 07:30 PM

AGD wears red at pref!

If you are a plus size, you can get dresses from Torrid. Feel free to disagree on the things.

I agree with everyone, check with the Greek Life office.

kddani 08-25-2004 08:05 PM

I'm not a tiny girl myself, but Rollergirl, i'm sorry, many of those patterns and cuts are NOT flattering on larger figures. A person wearing some of those would stand out like a sore thumb, and not in a good way.

Also the basic rule of fashion:
Just because they make it in your size and it looks cute, doesn't mean you should wear it. Things look different on everyone. Hence why I generally don't buy out of catalogs- I NEED to try things on. If you're not sure what looks good on you, take a VERY honest friend with you.

Thank you thank you thank you. I remember so many people from undergrad that were not a size 0 but just because some of their sisters were they thought (or were just clueless) it was cute to all dress in the same teeny tiny tops. Not flattering. I am not an ultra skinny girl either by any means and agree that you need to take a friend and try things on. Also basic black never goes wrong. This post reminds me of when our Rush chair wanted to order baby doll size rush tees. That did not go over well at all!

Discotish 08-27-2004 01:26 PM

I have to disagree, Rollergirl...

I think at a lot of what Torrid sells is very unflattering to a larger size. The quality, cuts and styles are not flattering, even on the models. There are many other companies that sell quality, fashionable clothing that is well made: Lane Bryant, Elizabeth by Liz Claiborne and for those plus sizes who are into Lilly Pulitzer, try www.keywestfashions.com as they have larger sizes in the Lilly look (they were the company that originally made the Lilly print)

PenguinTrax 08-27-2004 02:52 PM

Torrid stuff is good for a night out on the town, but I wouldn't recommend it for Recruitment. There are many nice, conservative options out there in addition to the standard Lane Bryant/Department Store. Target has some very cute and trendy plus items (I shopped there a lot before I had Avner) as does Kohls.

Thanks for that Key West link. I see tons of stuff there that I love and the prices aren't bad, either.

No - not at all. Maybe at your campus those fashions are acceptable. From my point of view, I find them too 'club' for Recruitment. Of course, there is the rather large difference in age between us, too. Just because I wouldn't wear or recommend those outfits, doesn't mean that they are bad or anything. In fact, if I was the size I am now, and 20 years younger, I'd probably wear a lot of those things! :D

That said - I need to check the local Hot Topic store to see if they have that Betty Paige tee shirt...and the Jem & the Holograms stuff takes ME back to my collegian days!!

That's just my opinion...

Disco...

I agree Discotish. Just from what was posted from their website I thought some of those cuts and fabric patterns were just horrendous. But to each her own.

I'm a plus size woman. I know it's a challenge to find clothes that fit , flatter, and within budget. I'd add to Discotish's list plus sizes womens stores such as Avenue, Ashley Stewart, and Marina Rinaldi. Also Talbots has a plus size line.

MissBehaves 09-08-2004 09:41 PM

For the ladies who need white...

Macy's has a cute one on clearance for $13.99!

For the ladies who need black...

Esprit has several nice (but not cheap) dresses.

I wish shopping was an Olympic sport. ;)

trojangal 09-08-2004 10:14 PM

If it were...I think I would medal...according to my hubby.

Kohls is always an excellent place to shop and won't break the budget. Also, here in the SE, Macy's-Rich's has wonderful sale prices right now..

I bought about $600 worth of shoes and clothes last weekend for around $200..and it was all quality..Liz Claiborne, Etienne Aigner, etc..
:)
