Door Songs!
Do other schools besides Alabama participate in door songs during rush? Does everyone get in the door and sing? If you dont have door songs then how do you invite the rushees in?
|
First round we do a cheer as we're pairing them off, that's the only thing allowed by our Panhell. We're doing the whole "no frills" rush. Very different from rush @ Bama, I'm sure :)
|
The way we do it at JSU: Gamma Rho Chis knock on the door of the building (we don't have houses, so rush parties are just set up in random places all over campus), the sorority opens the door, and the PNMs come inside. Once everyone is in and the door is closed, the door songs start. We're not allowed to go outside the building to do door songs, but once the girls are inside, we can do them. So that's what we do. :)
ETA: We do entrance and exit songs every day except Pref. For Pref, we just play soft music in the background...or at least that's how DZ does it. I'm pretty sure the other chapters do something similar. |
We can't go outside either to invite the rushees in. Everyone piles in the door and does the chant. I dont know how to make the pic show up but here is the link to what it looks like.

I know exactly what you mean. We have to wait until the PNMs get inside AND the door is closed behind them. It's a BIG squeeze!

At Ole Miss we do door songs. We stack the doors and sing a quick song/chant and then all run out and scream a Potential New Member's name and then bring her into the house. The crazy thing is that we cannot leave the door, like we all have to stay in the door frame and lean out and sing/chant. (all 180+ too 200+ members) The singing has to stop once everyone runs out to pick up their PNM. Also, the sorority member cannot leave their front porch/sidewalk area, they PNM has to come to the sorority member...strange rules, but they work :)

I think IU still does them...maybe someone who's been there more recently can correct me if I am wrong. I always thought they were fun. :)

At Texas Tech it was (and i'm assuming it still is) very similar to Bama's. Everyone piles up at the door and bangs on the walls (i know it sounds strange), door song starts and continues until all of the PNM's have been paired off w/a sister. Exits songs are the same way....they are started and don't finish until all of the PNM's are out the door. We are not allowed to walk out of the front door though. |
We don't do door songs per se. Our first-round parties were open houses, so PNMs could show up whenever, which makes it hard to sing them in :). A PNM would sign in and someone at the front desk would take her into the room and introduce her to a sister in the room before returning to the desk.
Later-round parties were scheduled at set times. PNMs lined up in order outside the room, sisters lined up inside, and we would sing as the PNMs entered the room and were paired with their rushers. You sang until you picked up your PNM or until the end of the song - which meant that if you weren't initially paired with someone, you had to sing LOUD toward the end! |
We don't really do door songs, per se.... Panhel ushers the girls to the sidewalk in front of the house. Then we all file out while singing or chanting, form a semi-circle on the front walk, and go "pair up" with a PNM. We do this outside. In January. And it takes fifteen minutes. No coats allowed! Thus, when the songs involve clapping, your hands reeeeally start to hurt! :)
For formal desserts and pref, we line up on the grand staircase in our entry way and sing; the PNMs are ushered into the house by Panhel and we greet them there and pair off. The door pictures from Bama and Ole Miss are super cute! |
At the University of Oregon we do door stack for open house. They used to do them at the start of every open house party but now its only the first and last parties. But the members aren't allowed outside the house at all so everyone piles in the door and we sing our song. Then we all back into our foyer (lots of backwards walking practice) and the VP Membership calls the PNMs in the house by name where they're paired up. We're not allowed to sing during the pairing.
What does everyone sing for door stack? We always did an "all greek song" that was basically the chants for every org all strung together, ending with your own. It was really cool. Do other campuses just sing their own songs? I always loved ours: G with an A with an M M with an A with a P P with an H H with an I Gamma Gamma Gamma Phi There she goes, just a-walkin down the street Singin Doo-wah Dee Gee Delta Gamma Delta G With a K and an A and a P-P-A With a D and an E and an L-T-A With a K and an A and a P-P-A Kappa Delta A-L-P-H-A Alpha Chi Omega A-L-P-H-A Alpha Chi Omega Alpha Phi, Alpha Phi says how do you do? Alpha Phi, Alpha Phi wants to welcome you. You've got that Chi-O smile You've got that Chi-O style You've got that special knack You're a Chi-O for a fact Pi Pi Beta Phi P-I P-H-I Pi Phi Me for Pi for Beta Phi for I just love Pi Beta Phi K-A-P-P-A G-A-M-M-A Kappa Gamma That's what I am-a S-I-G-M-A K-A-P-P-A Sigma Kappa you'll agree Is the best sorority |
We didn't do door songs, either, but we did sing as PNMs came into the house. Depending on the day, we were either all lined up on our stairs or in our formal liv. The PNMs were ushered to the door by Rho Chis and then were greeted at the door by a member who then took her somewhere to sit and talk. Then, with about 3-5 minutes left in the party, the floaters would start the exit song (which was usually pretty quiet in the beginning and then got louder as more girls joined in) and we sang for a minute or so after the door closed, because the PNMs could still hear us.

We did the door songs, but we could not sing once we stepped out the door, so as we went to meet / pair up with the girls we had to be totally silent...it was part of no-frills recruitment. But in the door way we would always make a diamond of women who were the only ones the pnm's could really see...it was really cool. We usually used Orientation Leaders that the girls would recognize in the diamond. I remember going through and a good friend of mine was right in the center of the diamond...it has a big impact because it is the first impression of the house (each night).
|
we always did a door song at the beginning and the end...and i never really liked doing them because the PNMs usually looked terrified. *lol* i guess if you're showing up to a place where you don't really know anyone and everyone is singing and clapping and bouncy, it can be a little intimidating. our songs were always just our own songs, although i really like the idea of doing an all-encompassing Greek one.

On the first night, appropriately titled "Go Greek", all the chapters use the same opening song, also titled "Go Greek". In it we sing go greek and the letters of the greek alphabet----and what a good way to learn the letters too!! The other 3 nights we sang, or cheered our own stuff.
|
Our door songs:
G PHi, G Phi B, Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta G Phi, G Phi B, Gamma Phi Beta Girls We are Gamma Phi, Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta Gamma, Gamma Phi, Gamma Phi Beta Girls G A M M A, Gamma Phi Beta Hey Gamma Phi, Gamma Phi, Gamma Phi Beta G A M M A, Gamma Phi Beta Hey Gamma Phi, Gamma Phi, Gamma Phi Beta Welcome to the Gamma Phi house, come on in. We also do: We are the Gamma Phi Beta's, We welcome you here Come in and join our fun and our cheer We're on the U of A campas, sorority row Gamma Phi shouts a welcome hello So you'd like to be another Gamma Phi And wear our crescent and pearls on high So come on along and we'll show you why All over the land, number 1's Gamma Phi |
AT UGA we also sing 'at the door' which usually means all members lined up the stair case. All PNM's come in and the door must be closed before the singing begins. We used to do about 3-4 songs each time. We sang at the end as well.
|
We have formal recruitment in Feb so it's a bit chilly to be by the front door but we do it! We have the staircase near the door too which is where sisters pile in when the small entry way is filled up. Usually the Pres and VP of Recruitment are at the door when the PNM group comes up and open the door while the rest of the chapter is singing.
Having everyone near the door is a nice way for the first sister of a bump group to "meet and greet". |
At Northern Arizona University we do not do door songs on the first night, but for skit night and philanthropy night we do... We have an all greek res hall, where each chapter has a chapter room... the door is closed and the perspecive members are brought to the chapter room and the recruitment councilor knocks on the door... Then we start banging on the door from the inside... then as soon as the door opens we sing... We sing different songs each year...

Looking forward to door song wars! lol! |
At Mercer we sing to the PNM's every night of Recruitment. Open House Night we meet them out at the sidewalk singing and lead them to the house and end with a pile up at the door. It's lots of fun!
:) I Love Alpha Gam! |

I've always enjoyed doing it this way. I know I was slightly taken aback when I went through, but usually our recruitment counselors do a good job of warning the PNMs. |
At the U of Arizona, we do door songs every day except Pref. We still sing on Pref night, but we don't do any screaming or bouncing :)
We have a door song for every time the PNMs walk in, and then a different one everytime they leave. We too can't leave the door-we have to stay inside which means we have to be really really loud! I will admit, its very overwhelming for the PNMs when they enter the very first house because the floors are shaking, the girls are really loud, and you can't see anything except people bouncing, clapping, and singing lol. Door songs are a lot of fun-I can't imagine not doing them! AZSigKap |
What's done at Arizona State University? Anyone know?

Some days we sing, but not every day. There is a lot of emphasis at my school on not wearing matching clothing or singing or chanting *too* much because we have a lot of pnms who don't expect or want the traditional, big, frilly recruitment. On the days we don't sing, we are suposed to talk to each other in the lines, so it's not like we're just staring down the pnms, but we aren't supposed to talk too loud or about anything inappropriate...it's really awkward. On pref night, we're all wearing mainly sleeveless black dresses, and it's freezing (we have deferred recruitment)! We have to be out there really early because you can see the house from waaay down the street. We sing: There's a kite called a Theta kite, Made of gold and light and shadow, Spun by the stars in my room last night. It's a kite made to catch a dream, Hold it tight until I wake, As if to tell me that dreaming's alright. ...over and over and over and over and over, both when the come, and when they leave until we can't see them anymore (which takes about ten minutes). While holding candles that drip hot wax on our hands. Good times, good times. |

It was a little overwhelming, but it was also exciting... especially when you're on the singing side! Come Come Come be a Sigma Sigma Kappa Come be a Sigma Kappa Girl We are Sigma Sigma Kappa We wear Sigma Kappa Pearls... ;) |
At Texas A&M we start by beating loudly on the doors and then start singing and chants while the PNMs are walking in and then same thing at the end of the events.
|
I guess what we do could be called door songs, only we call it "sing and sway." Since we don't have houses, we're in lines shouting ("singing") and swaying in rhythm. As the PNM's come down through the door, the girl at the head of the line closest to the door steps up to meet her, and so forth.
|
At UT, at least in my sorority (not sure about others as I did not go through formal rush), we bang on the walls and the door and scream first. Then we stack the door and sing and "mush" the girls in. That's not for every round though.
I'm glad I didn't go through formal rush. I think I would have been terrified. :) |
Just had to post, because the chat about door songs brought back great memories! Looks like the ADPi song at Bama has changed since I was there (eons ago!). We used to sing:
Hello Rushee, Come on in! ADPi's where the fun begins! We meet you. We greet you. With our hearts full of cheer. We meet you. We greet you. And you'll have a good time here (I think that was the line) Hello Rushee, Come on in! ADPis where the fun begins. We meet you, we gree-eet you With our hearts full of cheer! A-L-P-H-A D-E-L-T-A P-I, PI OH MY, ALPHA DELTA PI, HI! COME ON IN! I think that's how it went. It's been a while since I graduated (17 years!), but I do remember practicing the door song for HOURS! |
UCF is big on door songs. In fact, the PNMs learn a song for each sorority and sing it before going into each house (except for prefs), and the sorority has a different door song for each day.
At ADPi-- (back in my day in the late 90s) Day 1: "In the Jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight" Day 2: "Our House/In The Middle of the Street/ADPi/Is the place you wanna be" Day 3: (Changed the words to the baseball song from A League of their Own) "We are the members of/Alpha Delta Pi..." Prefs: Little ADPi And of course, those were just the entrance songs. We had a ton of exit songs! |
Door Songs
I just had to reply to this thread. Door songs were so much fun! Unless you were 5' tall (like me) and got stuck in the very front row all the way at the bottom. Sliding down on your knees (I should say slamming down because it all happened so fast) 15 times a day was painful! (not too mention 10 times the next day, and six times the day after that! My knees were black and blue).
And while I'm doing this (being very careful not to go flying out the door - I didn't want to be the one to get fined!) we sang: To the tune of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: Oh! Zeta Z-E-T-A-T-A-U-A-L-P-H-A Happiness is sisterhood each and every day When you are a part of this you're always glad to say Zeta Z-E-T-A-T-A-U-A-L-P-H-A Talk about tongue-twister! ROLL TIDE! |
we don't have "entrance songs", a few of the sororities do, but we have one for when the girls leave. Girls are invited in by PX's knocking on the door, and usually the president opens the door, invites the girls in, and welcomes them from the staircase/distributes nametags. We sing them out the door, and the next house they go to, TEM (lives 2 doors down) always lines their girls up on the sidewalk/up to the front door and welcomes them with a song.

Of course we do! Here in Ohio pledges serenade right before initiation. As actives we go around and listen to the pledges serenade to the frats. Pledges sing songs that our made up that pertain to our sorority. Sometime when we knock on the frat doors and they come to listen, they will sing back. It get's really funny!
