ipod as a gift for signif other...?
soooo i was thinkin about getting my bf an ipod. he's one of those completely-obsessed-with-music types (saw 5 concerts this summer, buys cds on a regular basis, has thousands of songs on his comp at school, even collects records, etc) and i think he'd love it. plus, he's on varsity bball and travels a lot (this way he could take all of his music w/ him instead of picking a few cds to take)
however, an ipod is a very expensive gift... i was thinkin about combining our 2 year anniv, his 21st bday, and xmas ;) i have a very good job this summer (interning in a law firm) and i've also made some $$ from other random things (babysitting, working a few weeks at my old job, ebaying, etc) so i could afford to buy this.. also, they just dropped the price on ipods (yippee!!!) new prices (4G model): 20gb ipod = $269 + tax (free ship) 40gb ipod + dock (incl) = $369 + tax (free ship) they also come w/ free engraving on the back of up to 2 lines if you order it online i'm not sure which to get.. although i'm leaning toward the 40gb (i heard the dock is really useful, and its $35 separately, and doubling the memory for $100 -- or $65 if i'm counting the dock -- is pretty good...) this way he'd never have to worry about running out of space and... hehe.. he could put some of my music on it too ;) anyway, im pretty sure if i got him the 20gb he'd exchange it and upgrade to the 40.. so here are my q's: 1. which ipod would you get? do you think ~$400 is wayyy too much for a gift considering we're college students even if its combined for 3 pretty big events? if you were a guy would this freak you out or would you be really happy? 2. would you even want an ipod? 3. i was thinking about having something engraved on the back... nothing like "OOOH POOKEY I LOVE YOU LOTS AND LOTS MWAHHHH LOVE, BINKYBEAR!" but just a short word that has a lot of significance for us, and maybe the date we started dating what are your thoughts on that? good/bad? ok everyone, lets get some advice :) oh, also: his bro just bought himself an ipod w/ his hs graduation $$ (he got a 20gb back when the 20's were $369 but included a dock) and my bf was talkin about how great ipods are etc but that theyre pretty expensive... im sure hed end up buying himself one or getting one for his 21st bday though |
Go for it, sister! You're coming up on two years of being together? You think he's worth it? (you obviously do :) ) then I think it would probably be the kind of gift that would mean a lot to him because of his musical interests...if you can comfortably afford it, I would do it. Definitely get it engraved as well, that makes it priceless ;)

Re: ipod as a gift for signif other...?
Did you check out the price with the student discount? You save money.

DEFINITELY check out the student discount. You can do it through apple.com and then compare with local ipod retailers.
|
unfortunately, that *IS* the price w/ the discount.. lol
regular is 299/399 (discount is 269/369) ;) |
hey what is the diff between Ipod and MP3 player??

I think it'd be great. I've always been a fan of useful gifts over romantic ones.
I believe what I got my gf after two years was a blender (a very nice blender) |
I have a Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra.
40 GB's- $250 bucks. Way cheaper than an I-Pod. It works like a charm, I love it. I got my boyfriend a $230 dollar gift for our 8 month because that was when he became my longest relationship. Considering how long the two of you have been dating, and how big of a music fan he is, go for it, I'm sure he'll love it. |
My boyfriend gave me an iPod for Christmas. It was a very nice gift. He bought the 40 gig iPod for himself and lost it in a taxi cab. He's still kicking himself over that. He recommends the 20 g just in case people lose it like he did.
|
o god..
if he loses it... i dont even wanna imagine lol maybe ill glue it to him or something lol... so... what did you guys think about having it engraved on the back? |

If he wants it it's a great gift. I agree with ktsnake, I'd always rather get a gift that I want and can really use.
|
Since it's not a very romantic gift by nature, more of a "Woh! Awesome!" gift, you could get it engraved...but I wouldn't get very sappy. May the date you started dating on the back small and discrete with your initials...
Or his name written nicely since it's a gift for him. I don't know, be creative, just remember an ipod is something he'll probably be carrying in public places and you don't want to be so romantic that it's too much so as to embaress him. |
I don't care if the person was my wife, I hate having things engraved with something from someone else. I had a chick give me stuff that had her name on it as well as mine. What the heck was I supposed to do? Show everyone that? Some girls just don't understand guys at all.
-Rudey |
well if i was going to get it engraved, id engrave "wdil" which stands for something that has special meaning without being over the top or sappy or lovey-dovey...
maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe the date we started dating, but im not sure if thats too much def NOT something like: "honeybear, i love you so so so much!!! i love when you sing me love songs! MWAH MWAH MWAH, your baby" |

And yeah good idea about NOT doing something like that, I think he'd beat you over the head a few times with the ipod if you did :P |
My boyfriend gave me an iPod for X-mas and I absolutely love it. (It helps that his bro works for Best Buy and got it at a discount).
|
so what is everyones advice?
- ipod (yes or no) - size (20? 40?) - engraved? (yes or no) - what engraved? "wdil" or "wdil" (top line) "9.1.02" (2nd line) hehehe i still have a little time to decide... ALSO: i wanna trick him and put the ipod box in a diff box and surprise him.... any suggestions? like... put it in the box for something he could believe id get, but wouldnt really be that excited... and then open that and be super-surprised/excited! ideas welcome :) |
I think that a 20 g iPod engraved with his initials or name would be nice. :)
|
I'd say yes to the Ipod and I think 20 GB is more than enough. I'd pass on the engraving though because I don't think a guy would care so why bother.
|
I have a 40gb equivilant type player...
While I only have 12 gigs filled. I plan on borrowing lots of friends cd's.... So 20 vs 40 depends on how many cd's he has / plans to have to borrow, etc. I'd go with the WDIL / Date, but that's just me. Maybe put his name or his initials on it too... I wouldn't have both of your names on their though, just because it doesn't seem right to engrave that on an ipod. and if you're ever concerned with money, if he can stand a slightly larger mp3 player, go for the Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra |
Yes
20 GB because you can choose what you want to go onto your ipod. I have a mini ipod and I only have my 3-star, 4-star, 5-star and workout songs playlist on my mini so I don't have a bunch of songs taking up space that I don't really listen to. My bf bought mine for our 6 month anniversary and he's into computers and says the ipod has a great user interface or something like that. very easy to use. I don't know about regular ipods, but the minis are sold out in a lot of stores and the ones on ebay are around $300. just an FYI. |
I would go with just his initials--if you decide to do the engraving at all. What happens if you break up? He might really dig the iPod, and would want to keep it, but the anniversary date would just be a pain in my ass. Even if you do get married--the anniversary of your dating won't be as important as the anniversary of your marriage.
I'm just saying. |
i wouldnt get a mini...
the minis are 4gb ... $250 (or more on ebay) the regular ones are 20gb ($269) or 40gb ($369) the mini is good for someone who doesnt have much music but wants an ipod in a "pretty color" :) |
Definitely get him an ipod. I'm not sure whether 20 or 40 (because I don't really know much about that). Personally, I think any gift is better (whether to give or to receive) when its engraved, it just makes it more personalized. Like more thought went into it, not that you wouldn't really think about it, but you know what I mean. The suggestions you have for engraving are good, definitely nothing lovey. If you can trick him by putting it in a different box, that would be really fun, he'd be soooo surprised. Maybe you can get a really big box, and fill it with a lot of fun tissue paper and confetti and then have the ipod inside.
Keep us posted on how it turns out :) |
Ummm 40 is not a lot and that's why Apple is coming out with a 60. I and a bunch of my friends have over 40. It'd be nice to have it all on one spot and I know a lot of my friend complain about the mini because they have to keep moving stuff around.
-Rudey |
well why does it matter if its by apple or anything?? its still an MP3 player right??? just buy what you can afford and I am not a fan of engraving (its nice when guys give it to you but when a girl gives to guys hmm noo they are not fan of that kind of thing).
What I am worried about is- what if a guy goes, oh i want the new cooler ones and only after like few months you bought it.. guys always want the new and cooler stuff with all the flashing lights and beeping sounds LOL........... I am sure you can find a good one for 150 and get him bunch of smaller gifts too rather just one big fancy one. |
iPods rock, and I think it's awesome that you want to go with the best! ;)
Go with the 20 gig, and just get the "wdil" engraved on it. He'll love it and you'll be an awesome (pi phi) girlfriend. :) |
i thinkt hat the size depends on how much music he has and wants to transfer over to it. i have the 20gb and i've only used 1gb of that so far, and it's taken me some time to get that much on it, so this size is fine for me. if he's got a lot of music, he may want the bigger one. if you do the engraving, maybe those letters that you mentioned or his initials.
|
1. this *is* the newest flashiest model for a while at least.. they just came out with the 4G line 2 weeks ago... which should be good for at least another year or 2 (although rumor has it they are coming out w/ a 60gb.. but thats just excessive)
2. im not sure exactly how much music he has... a month ago i casually mentioned that kind of stuff and he estimates having ~4000 songs on his comp, and maybe 80 cds... although he just bought 3 new cds this week! this boy buys lots of cds  3. ipod v. other brand? the ipods are lighter, a lot less complicated, nicer looking, and smaller... and i think hed prefer an ipod over another brand. (plus, the iriver ones which are comparable in memory are black, bulky and only about $50 less) |
As the saying goes, bigger is better. Get the 40 GB. He'll appreciate it in the long run. I've got a couple of buddies who bought iPods before deploying to Afghanistan and Iraq. They came back with them, still looking new and working fine. So you know they're durable, lol.
I wish I had one for my trip today. All I've got is the Nike MP3 player (designed for running and other outdoor activities, no where near the amount of memory as the iPod). I could really use a 'road trip' type MP3 player though and I'll probably eventually purchase the iPod when the prices go down as time progresses. Don't they already have 60 and 80 GB models out? |
