Heart Burn

Anyone know a quick fix for heartburn? I have water, Pepsi, and thats about all.

Chewing gum helps me. When I eat, I drink something fizzy like sprite. I wouldn't do coke or any other soda with caffiene, it is bad for heartburn.

For me, a little baking soda in water works wonders.

Roseblum15 07-31-2004 01:25 PM

milk can sometimes help

That's good idea. I was thinking of Alka Selter tablets maybe?

I go through intense amounts of Tums and antacids and stuff. I bought the candy flavored ones because once you start taking so many it can get gross.

I always thought if you find yourself having to take a lot and over a long period of time you should get checked out for a probable stomach ulcer?

As opposed to every now and then which'd mean hypochondriasis if you felt it was indicative of an ulcer (though could be coincidental).

Like someone else said, if you have heartburn more than like 4 times a week you should go to a doctor. I started having heartburn last summer almost every day. I finally went to the doctor and found out that I have a Hiatal Hernia which causes Acid Reflux Disease. My doctor put me on Nexium and since then I don't get heartburn if I take my medicine. You should be careful with heartburn because if you do have a Hiatal Hernia you can really mess up your esophogus. Hope you feel better.

Tums or Pepto works pretty well for me now.

I had to take Prevacid at one point because it got so bad, but that got it under control and I'm down to just Pepto/Tums now.

Cold Water works like a champ.

My whole family lives off of Prevacid. Unfortunately, I have trouble swallowing pills.

It's great stuff, and I didn't have any side effects. Luckily I didn't have to stay on it for long.

Heartburn vs Potential Ulcer

To me, heartburn is the acid reflex that just stays there.

What about if you have a on/off stomach pain for a few days but no acid reflux type sympton?

If this continues, I might go to the med clinic today..they just better not give me that barium crap:p It makes me want to throw up which defeats the purpose of trying to swallow itl

ETA: Went to clinic and got some meds which help a little. Also thought I was coming down with flu, but that test was negative. Doc wants me to make appt with my real doc to do ultrasound on my gallbladder...no matter what they find, I'm going to AGD TLC next weekend...no refunds;)

UGH i have the worst heartburn. This is an almost daily thing (yes i've talked to my doctor, she gave me prevacid but my stupid insurance company wouldn't cover it, so the doctor prescribed me something else, generic i'm assuming, but i haven't picked it up yet.....)

So I can't stand the fruit flavored kinds, the only flavor i can tolerate is peppermint... but its starting to be a stomach thing too....

ok my b*tching is over now.....

Years later, milk is the only thing that helps right away. I do a shot of milk, real quick, and it's gone. Tums, Rolaids, nothing else helps. Just my milk.

A friend of mine thought she was having heartburn on random occasions over the course of about a year. Every time she had these "heartburn" feelings, she would drink some milk.

Eventually she had one of her episodes and ended up in the hospital and had to have emergency surgery to remove her gallbladder. Apparently her doctor told her that drinking the milk would "mask" the true problem and that it was the WORST thing she could have done. So, be careful what you use to control your heartburn, or see a doctor if it's really bad or constant! You never know what could truly be causing it.

I'm allergic to milk! i can't breathe when i have it.... my allergy is def better than it used to be, so i can have a little cheese or ice cream every now and then, but plain milk def does me in.

Not a home remedy or anything, but I swear by Zantac.

Gum does work though!

honeychile 07-11-2007 09:17 PM

PM_Mama00, have you seen a doctor yet? Persistant heartburn can cause some pretty serious conditions.

In the meantime, have you tried saltines? Not the club cracker or Ritz type, but true saltines absorb a lot of it.

My family is plagued with heartburn. I only get it when I eat certain foods, so it's my own fault. I don't get it all the time though.

honeychile 07-27-2007 09:54 PM

Not listening to my own advice, I took a few Zantac & milk prior to having spaghetti. I'm practically doubled over with pain! blech.
