Northern Virginia/Panhell girls?

are there any GC girls in NoVa interested in getting an (active) Panhell alumna chapter started? From the website there doesn't seem to be one...

any women out there belong to a Panhell alumna chapter who've had good experiences?

adpiucf 07-30-2004 03:24 PM

I'd love to get involved out here, as I just moved to Arlington. I just emailed NPC; there is a chapter in DC. Maybe we can both get involved.

seraphimsprite 07-30-2004 03:36 PM

I'm in NOVA and I'd love to get together. I'm pretty sure the local Panhell alumnae chapter is still active though - according to their website they had a meeting May 5. I never understood how alumnae panhellenics work though - aren't they comprised of delegates from each alumnae group? I didn't think it was something you could just join. But I could be wrong.

I am not in VA, however I am an active member of the APH here in Charlotte. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Also, nhfuhlmer (I hope that's spelled correctly) is a member as well. I haven't seen her on the boards lately though.

As to how they work - they are composed of a representative (Panhellenic Delegate - sound familiar :)) of each Alumnae group. Generally, you can contact them to find out if they have a rep for your GLO yet, and they should be able to let you know. It runs just like a regular panhellenic council would, except you have more than one campus (we have 2 we support). We have an executive council, and meet once per month. We give a $1500 scholarship to UNC-Charlotte, and we give an $1100 scholarship to Queens University.

In ours, if you are a member as a delegate (meaning, you're the representative from your alum. association), your dues are $40. Generally, these are paid by your alum. association. If you are an individual member, your dues are $8. These amounts are for the whole year - which runs from September to May, just like a school year. We have one girl who is one of like three Phi Sigma Sigma alumnae in the state, so since she does not have an association, she comes by herself, and paid the $8.

Anything else you want to know? Just ask. ;)

I guess basically what I'm trying to establish is a non-official panhellenic "young alumns" group.

There are lots of Phi Mus in the area.... but most of them are older career women, who have to schedule their time around their kids, husbands, etc.

I REALLY miss having my collegiate sisters around -- someone to go to the bars with, make up cheesy shirts with, do projects with.

So yeah. Probably I shouldn't drag the term "Panhellenic" in there, when what I really meant was, "I want to establish a fun group of young sorority girls who miss their collegiate sisters and want a group of friends to connect with." It's HARD to meet new girls when you get out of college!

imadeltaz 08-01-2004 01:18 AM

I have had experience with the NOVA Panhell in the past, and if you are looking for a "younger" experience, that chapter isn't it. Have fun!

shadowstar 08-01-2004 06:24 PM

i'd definitely be interested in getting involved in just a "hey, we're young, hot, awesome Greek girls hanging out" kind of group. :) (obviously, i live in NoVA too!) also, if you're looking for ways to stay involved in Greek life, check and see if you're org has an alum association in the area - i was lucky enough that the DC chapter of my AA has a lot of young women i've become good friends with. i also serve on a chapter advisory board for a collegiate chapter and have met some neat people that way as well as having the chance to be involved in a completely different side of my sorority. hope we can work out a time to get together!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-01-2004 06:36 PM

shadowstar, that's actually EXACTLY the sort of group I was hoping to get together!

a VERY loosly oganized group of women who miss the ties and sisterhood events they had in college.

These would be women who:

(1) want to share the bonds of sorority life, albeit with women who weren't necessarily in their own sorority,
(2) want to continue to make new bonds of sisterhood, especially with women their own age,
(3) want a support group of young educated women who are going through the same thing they are
(4) want to HAVE FUN. I'm talking go out to Chili's and talk and drink for a few hours, or go to a club on the weekends, or road trip to the beach. We can still go to our respective sororities' alumn luncheons and stuff -- but this is an inter-alumn group with an emphasis on being wild and young.

My Phi Mu alumna group is AWESOME, just so you know. And I'm sure you guys' is too. I just wish there were more Phi Mus my age who went!

if we wanted we could work on other activities -- philanthropic, etc. -- but for the time being I'm mostly interested in friendship. I don't know about you girls but I am finding it almost IMPOSSIBLE to find great girls my age to be friends with now that I'm living up here -- I've been here almost a year and STILL wistfully think of going out with my sorority sisters on Friday & Saturday nights!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-01-2004 06:42 PM

ps we'd need a name.

"hey, we're young, hot, awesome Greek girls hanging out" had my vote, but maybe something shorter? ;) Greek letters would be cute, but (as has been discussed many times!) it's hard to find a combo that hasn't been used before...

we'll be like a gang of hot awesome greek girls. People will fear us. They'll run for fear the fun will catch.

what about psi eta alpha? i don't know if that has been used, but it sure fits your needs!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-01-2004 07:42 PM

BWAHAHA! LOVE it.

YHA girls, unite!

mmm. We need colors too.

shadowstar 08-01-2004 08:46 PM

i agree that it is tough to meet women around my age, even though i'm in grad school. it's definitely not an environment terribly conducive to forming friendships, especially when you're juggling work and school and all the rest. so having a group of people to hang out with who have at least the starting point of the common bond of having been Greek is great. plus it's good for networking, not only about jobs but good restaurants, the best place to get a martini, the best place to meet young, single, hot, rich men...*lol*

maybe we should try to come up w/ something for Labor Day weekend? there will probably be lots of activities going on in the District anyway - there always are - and people usually have the extra time off work/school.

adpiucf 08-01-2004 08:57 PM

Heck, I am up for something this weekend in the district! I don't know anyone!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-01-2004 09:01 PM

man, can we at least wait until a week from Monday when I get my cast off? :D

yeah, that's what I'm thinking -- girly networking. Jobs, of course -- though we may be limited since we'll basically all be around the same age, and looking for jobs the same places -- but even the little things like where to go to get a decent haircut and if it's reasonable to expect him to offer to pay for me on the 2nd date.

the letters were just girly fun :-) might be fun to invest in, though, especially if we end up expanding the idea and doing volunteer work and such. We'll want a handle to call ourselves (other than Hot Young Greek Ladies.)

shadowstar 08-01-2004 09:04 PM

why are you in a cast?!

i won't be in town for a bit...leaving this Friday and will gone until the 16th...

i think the ideas of letters are fun too...we should come up with Greek letters that would look like it just said "hot". *lol*

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-01-2004 09:11 PM

HAHAHAHA

see, we could just do, "Eta Omicron Tau,"

but I vote we go a *teensy* bit more subtle and either be

HQT
HOP
POT

etc.

love that idea though.

you'll love this: I'm in a cast because one of my pledge sisters, who was called up (Army Reserves) to Iraq, was in town for a 15 day leave period. I was performing my version of an Irish Jig, apparently (I had enjoyed a few adult beverages earlier in the evening) and came down sort of on the side of my foot. I broke a metatarsal (sp?) which is the fingerlike bone inside your foot, but I didn't think it was broken -- after all, I always heard you can't put ANY weight on a broken foot, and mine just hurt like hell -- so I helped some friends move on Saturday.... went shopping on Sunday.... with a white face and gritting my teeth because it hurt so bad!

yeah. Broke it in 2 other places because I walked on it for 4 days before I finally got x-rays. I am not exactly a candidate for Mensa.

adpiucf 08-01-2004 09:22 PM

Y'all are too much. I gracefully decline to wear letters; I'm getting too old to pull that off anywhere but convention, but I would love to meet 20-30-somethings in this area.

And yes, I'm dying to find a place to get my hair cut and highlighted!!! Any referrals would be greatly appreciated!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-01-2004 10:05 PM

Oh, you're no fun ;) I bet we'll talk you into it! Please say you'll at least participate in the obligatory pledge sleepover?

oh.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-06-2004 07:36 PM

ok, so seriously -- who's interested in doing this?

adpiucf 08-08-2004 08:34 PM

Let's meet for martinis!

I need HELP! I have no female friends in this damn town and it is killing me to spend all my time with men! (Well, that has an up-side, too...)

SAVE ME!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-08-2004 08:40 PM

who can do it this Friday?

adpiucf 08-08-2004 08:42 PM

I can!!! Or before!

Again, new in town, don't know a soul... need female friends!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-08-2004 08:59 PM

:D tell me about it!

Well, I'm working Tues & Thurs nights (I waitress for a lil extra money) but I'm free Wed & Friday.

Friday I have somewhere to be from 8 to 9.... but other than that...

I don't want to meet Mon b/c I'm, um, broke. :(

seraphimsprite 08-09-2004 09:39 AM

I'm definitely interested. This week is a little tough for me, but Thursday or Friday are possibilities.

adpiucf 08-09-2004 09:41 AM

We're looking at a Friday girls night :) Please join in!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-09-2004 12:41 PM

definately join us! the more the merrier!

We haven't decided on a meeting place (and when we do, we probably won't post it on an internet board for the crazies) but PLEASE PM either me or adpiucf and let us know you're interested. Or just post here and we'll PM you!

breathesgelatin 08-10-2004 11:05 AM

I'm not living in the NoVA area (yet), but I have a lot of Pi Phi contacts in the area if y'all are going to get this started. It could be really fun!

adpiucf 08-10-2004 12:02 PM

sounds great! I'm excited to make new friends in this new place :)
