Speeding Ticket
...
|
rule of thumb in the Ames are to avoid speeding tickets:
10 over in 30 to 45 zones, drop 5mph between 11pm and 6am. 15 over in 55 to 65 zones on the highway and 15 to 20 over on the Interstate, drop 5mph between midnight and 4am oh- I heard most places in CA the minimum cost for a speeding ticket is $75? I've never gotten one above $41 here in IA |
it has been 10 months since my last ticket *knock on wood*.
the first few years of driving, i was really bad. i had a lot of growing up to do. when a judge says to you, 'i do not want to see you in this courtroom again' after looking at your driving record, it is time to get serious. i finally got myself to not care about other drivers. here in Jacksonville, most people are just vicious on the road. they do not care about anyone else. i still get tempted and want to speed every now and then. then again, how many people do not get tempted? i remember two years ago, i got pulled over at 2 a.m. so the cop naturally asks if i had anything to drink. my innocent my mind doesnt realize that he is talking about alcohol, so i say that i had a fruit punch earlier:rolleyes: he looks at me like i was trying to be smart with him. oops. i am crossing my fingers that i make it through 2004 without a ticket. i have gotten a ticket for different reasons every year since my i got my license. the longest that i have gone without a ticket is 15 months but that was over the course of 2 years....so *knock on wood* |

That must be nice. Speeding tickets here start at $100 & move up for every 3 MPH over you are! |
Speeding tickets here start at $131. If you go more than 20 mph over the posted limit, it jumps much higher.
|
You're lucky it was just a ticket.
I don't know what kind of rules you ahve where you are, but in Ontario we have a demerit point system. 16-29 km/h would have resulted in 3 points on your license. Once you reach 6 points, you license could be suspended for a month. When you hit 9 points, it's suspended for either 3 or 6 months. Then after that suspension you're back down at 6. If you hit 9 points again, you're suspended for a year. It's rough. |

Oh geez, a $40 ticket would be awesome!!
I got one back in January or February...I was going I think 71 in a 55...and I got a $112 ticket. |
I've been blessed enough to receive 2 speeding tickets. I've been pulled over with a warning countless times. I'm really bad about it. I don't even realize I'm speeding until I see flashing blue and red lights behind me.
In Florida, you get points on your license for your tickets and the insurance companies just LOVE to increase your premiums by $200 per month for those points. Luckily, we have the option to go to traffic school. |
I got a ticket 2 years ago for going 17 over the limit. and, it was one week before christmas . i payed $75 for the ticket, another $10 to get my driving records sent, and $25 for defensive driving. got stopped twice, but got only one ticket

Sorry to hear it! :(
I've only ever gotten warnings <knock on wood>, but my husband has gotten a couple of tickets. My favorite was the cop who said "I clocked you at 73, but I'm feeling generous, so I'm only giving you a ticket for doing 70." IT'S THE SAME FINE!!! And this was in an old clunker that could do 65... tops... on a good day... if you were going downhill. Many US states have a point system. Speeding results in 2-4 points depending on how fast you were going. Too many points and it's bye-bye license. The points stay there for a few years, but you can usually take a safe-driver course from an auto school to get points taken off sooner. The good news is that most states don't communicate points to other states, so if you get an out-of-state ticket you don't get points. (Exception: I think NY and NJ inform each other about points.) |
Here in NC, they're supposed to take your license from you if they pull you for doing 15 over. I don't think it's enforced too often though.
Yes - I really miss that about FL - being able to take the class and not get the points on your license. You still have to pay the ticket though, which sucks. And pay for the cost of the class. Anyone ever get a speeding ticket and not pay it? What happens? When I was in college, I took a road trip to see my friend in TN. I got pulled by a state trooper, and he wrote me a ticket. I couldn't afford to pay it at the time...and they never sent me a reminder thingie. I've been back to the DMV several times since then, and every time I've asked them if there was anything on my record that needed to be taken care of, and they've said it was clear. So...I don't know. On the other hand, I have a friend who was sitting at his desk at work one day, when 2 cops showed up and arrested him for having an outstanding ticket from NY from like 5 years ago.... |
Y'alls tickets are weak. Here in Oklahoma, back in '97 I received my last ticket... I believe it was around $120 for going 69 in a 45. They've increased a lot since then. I've heard that one town that borders mine has been known to slap people with $600 speeding tickets. The local newspaper did a story on them that showed about 70% of their municipal revenue is from speeding tickets.

I thought it was customary that on the first time you're ever pulled over the officer simply gives you a warning, unless you're going ridiculously fast. I was going 78 in a 65 the first time ever in my life to be pulled over and the asswipe still gave me a ticket. Other than that I have a perfect driving record.

i do not think that is in Florida. at least, it never happened to me. i mainly got jerks for cops. anywho, several years ago, i got pulled over on school campus. the cop actually asked me if i can afford the $100 ticket. i told her no cause i seriously couldn't. then she said that because i could not afford it, i could go with a warning:eek: i wish all the cops asked that, then my record would be ticket free! |
My first (and hopefully only!) ticket cost me 155 bucks. It was in Pennsylvannia (I'm a native New Yorker though so I'm sure his eyes got all gaga over my out of state plates) when I was driving back to Valpo (in Indiana) back in... November I think it was. I was going 82 in a 65 (17 miles over).
Yeah that one hurt the wallet a bit. I try to stay around 75ish now when I'm on Interstate 80. Cops don't seem to mind that. |
I am sorry your day was starting poorly but is it really necessary to call the cop an asshole or an asswipe. Both people on here who insulted cops admitted to doing well over the speed limit. That would means the cops were doing THEIR JOBS. So basically, sucks that you all got caught.
I'm not trying to be a bitch, it really sucks that you guys all got tickets, I've had a few. But maybe we should respect cops instead of name calling for doing what they are supposed to be doing. And theres no need to be further insulting to their faces, unless of course they are being insulting to you as well. |
I got a ticket last night ( at 3:55 am! ) for parking the wrong way in front of my own house! Fvcking cops and their quotas, its rediculous...

Well this is all true. You can't really blame them for giving you aticket nd doing their job, I guess.
But keep in mind: Police, and their families, do not get tickets if pulled over, except in rare exceptions. So in fact, they are giving you a citation they wouldn't get themselves. Remember that everytime you get pulled over for something relatively trivial. In NJ, they just raised the fine on failure to mpresent documents to 177 dollars. So if you left your registration card at home, its a 177 dollar fine with no plea bargain. And the kicker is that as soon as they run your plates they know your car is registered  Quote:

Cops and their families can get tickets. Mr. SSS is a cop and frequently warns me to slow down when I'm driving because he can't help me if I get pulled over.
There are no quotas. But it looks like a cop isn't doing his job if he doesn't give out tickets when all the other officers in the department do. |

I have a really outstanding driving record, with only three moving violations in 40 years of driving. The first violation was within weeks of first getting my license.
Every time I've been stopped or been in an accident (never my fault -- thankfully), the police have been highly respectful and very professional. I am always respectful to them as well. My daughter was once stopped by a real jerk once on the way to a dance at school, and I complained to the County Sheriff whom I had met a couple of times. Two of the officer's superiors got back to me right away. They said he must have had a bad day because he's a really good guy. I told them that was fine, and I didn't want him punished -- but just wanted him to know how his attitude affected young adults and their respect for the police. Which is a long way of saying I don't like to hear police referred to as a$$holes either. If you're breaking the law and get caught, they're just doing their jobs -- and their jobs aren't easy. |
I just renewed my licence in Illinois. Four years ago, about a month after I'd renewed my license, I got a speeding ticket. $75. Not my first, but this time I decided to merely pay it and not go to traffic school like I did when I got pulled over in Chicago (that was my second pull-over but first ticket). Anyway, since I'd had a ticket, I had to RETAKE the written driving test. Fifteen signs plus 20 ABC questions.
I got three wrong (two were skidding and aquaplaning, one was how far in advance to do your turn signal). Luckily, that was passing. So keep in mind that you may have to retake your test if you've gotten a speeding ticket! |

Downtown Nashville: Four-way intersection
Light was yellow, I turn. Apparently, the cop had nothing better to do on a Friday night. He made a U-turn and pulled me over. $50, ridiculous...only ticket I've ever had... Get a clue (or some common sense) cops. |
"Can" but don't generally. At least in NJ. Here in NJ even a PBA card will get you out of most tickets. And family members of policeget a special "shield" that says family member on it.
During my EMT certification one cop was relating a story: They were trying to pll this one guy over and he wouldn't stop, so they went on this merry goose chase and even road blocked the road ahead of him. They found out he was a cop also. They let him go. Even after like 3 cities and the state police were involved. Quote:

Well I got pulled over on my way home from work tonight - - going 21 over -- and *luckily* he didn't give me a ticket. But the officer told me that he could've given me one for $117. I'm luuuuucky.
|
Will the officer himself get a ticket? Just curious. Here they will let oficers go that are driving drunk . . . although they will usually give thema ride home.
But you wouldn't get that chance as a civilian. WE actually had some big press flaps about that stuff here. Quote:
