Beer vending machine
Was very surprised today to see a beer vending machine at the Triangle House at Rose Hulman.I.T. in Hoosierland.
Cold beer for a dollar. Visible from the front door. Guess they don't have much of a risk management problem there. |

It is probably an excellent source of revenue. It's their business, and if they are adult enough to handle it properly, then more to them. I wish we had one..... And the post about the vending machines in Europe....AWESOME! |
i like reading this risk managemen stuff..:D
|
One of the 10 fraternities on our campus (not sure how many of them actually have houses, but anyway) has beer in their vending machine... it's only one of the slots and is a mere 40 cents. It's also always the cheapest beer the store has to offer.

Unfortunately, this does have potential Risk Management problems written all over it -- as well as liability insurance increases. Unless this is a super-human chapter, who wants to argue that they will absolutely and totally enforce underage drinking laws? |
The Europeans are so much more advanced than us, damn them.

Hoosier, Hoosier, from what I have read, on this thread, it sounds like you Broke and entered?
Hm, amazing how it gets from seeing through the front door to trespassing! When is it so wrong to stop by other Greek Houses?? LXA is not the only house I have ever been in, anyone else? It is usually nice to keep up some form of Greek Relationships by some. As DeltaAlum said, this could have Risk Management written all over it!:( |
Beer vending machines? I must live in a cave...never heard of it!!! Would be nice though :)

He doesn't stop in houses anyway. He sneaks around peeping through the windows. |
Well Hoosier shouldn't be sneaking around...
BUT Now we all know that there is an unrestricted source for alcohol in a fraternity that's breaking the law. Again, the risk is there and it was exposed and that sucks and now they should manage the issue. Whether it's racist acts, violent threats against another fraternity member and defending your own brother by insulting the victim, or having a beer machine, the risks are unacceptable and I'm sure they are smart enough to handle it well. -Rudey |
I just want to remind you all that hoosier has trespassed on various fraternity properties in an attempt to find any excuse to say "This is a bad chapter", according to his ridiculous, outdated criteria of what a fraternity should be....
If Triangle has been able to control that situation without any hostility from the community or the school, then why should anyone hate on that. |
I did not know it was restricted to Only Members of Your Fraternity to go to your Houses. If that is the case, from the sounds of It, I wouldnt want to be in your House!
Why would Soroitys want to come either if not welcomed and Non XYZ members? No wonder so many Greek Organizations have problems on Campus. Ever wonder why there is little intra action? It seems that the ostrich is not the only one with a head in the sand! Hoosier, do you have little Greek Mice ( No Names Mentioned) in your pocket to take along with you lurking in Other Greek Houses??? LOL!:D |
I never said MEMBERS ONLY idiot. I meant unwelcome guests like him. I know YOU wouldn't mind the thought of some sketch old dude just wandering around, poking his nose in everything at your house, but I wouldn't.
Once again I ask that you ask to be removed as a moderator so that I can add you to my ignore list and I no longer have to deal with your incoherent, error-riddled posts. Or just stop addressing my posts.....it will make life a lot easier. |
Rose-Hulman isn't a dry campus if that makes a difference, or at least it wasn't last I heard. I do think they changed the rule in the dorms from having kegs in your room with the door open to you should shut the door if you are drinking. The crime rate is nill here so a very liberal policy on drinking doesn't seem to effect much of anything. I guess this is what happens when everyone is a uber smart engineering major.

Why Stanely what a nice post!:)
Once again, you have proved yourself worthy of being a Greek Organization member. What a shame we had a nice PM about your situation and me being so supportive. So, Unwelcomed, does that mean that If I am at your school and if your House and Chapter is still there that I could not just stop by and introduce my self as I have done at SX, SN, Fiji, TKE, STG, amd some others trying to see how they are doing? Maybe there is no LXA Chapter there. But, I am interested enough in Greek Life to find out? Not to bad mouth them but if I can be of service with some ideas for them. See what is going on on A Campus. Are you really so narrow minded that You think that Your Fraternity is the only one who is alive. Do you really try to find out about other Greek Organizations other than yours. It takes ALL of Us to make Greek Social OrganiZations work! Go ahead, Stan, suggest that I am removed as a Moderator, Because of you and some others, I would like to say SO LONG GC! But, there are so many others who are much nicer that keep me enjoying GC! Hope you sleep good at night and keep your Chapter open! |
Let's get this thread back on track -- which is discussing beer vending machines, not breaking and entering or personality conflicts.

2) I really try to not to bother you. You do have your Homer Simpson-like moments of genius where you actually say something pertinent. But you've also said things about NPHC, MCGLOs, and various other parts of Greeklife that have myself as many others thinking "What the......" I realize you want what's best for the greeks, but you always seem to misinterpet something or just flat out say something very ignorant...I as well as everyone else am guilty of this too, but sometimes I get the impression that you think this is still 1950's Greekdom... If you want to continue our skirmish in PM, fine....I don't think anyone wants to see Stan v. Tom anymore |
OK So now the info is out there. We can't know for sure if it's true, but we now have heard that said fraternity has a beer machine that dispenses alcohol to whomever. How do you handle the situation?
I say a nice combination of keeping quiet and removing the beer machine reduces your risk. -Rudey |

Stan, great idea.
Risk can be so well, troublesome. whether is it is a wet campus, there can be many problems that can come from this! That is the edge of the knife, is it legal or not. Can Underage Members buy from it? If they can, it is against the law. Well, if they are of 21 years of age. So, what is to keep minors from plugging in money and buying Beer? # 1 violation of state laws. Yes, Alchol Laws differ in Europe, but Laws Govern English Pubs. Why, because there is a Drinking problem there! France, is unto it self! Germany, likewise. of the brave! Still a Risk Management Problem that could happen! What is miney? It has been brought up so many times that Greeks are De-Charterd for a lot smaller things than this! It is a Wreck about to happen! Beer or Charter? |
So many CG members have said so many times that it is just inevitable that college students are going to drink and that there's really nothing we can do about the fact that it is against the rules and the law.
I agree with that. Which, unfortunately, leads me to the conclusion that sooner or later these machines are going to cause problems. I simply don't see older members restricting younger members from buying a beer. I also find it absolutely unbelievable that any national organization, whether "dry" or not, would knowingly allow a beer vending machine in a chapter house simply because of the insurance cost and liability issues. |

--- Back in the day, I knew of a few chapters that had beer in their soft drink machine. :p And I recall one summer going with my brothers to another fraternity chapter house to help the other chapter remove their beer from their machine. They were being visited by their nationals and they had some rule about not having alcohol in the house when no one was residing there in the summer. Or something along those lines. We didn't really care the reason, just wanted to help. And of course we helped them dispose of it the best way possible. ;) Now that I think about it, it was quite fraternal of us to pitch in and help another fraternity. |
I understand underage drinking is a risk management issue, but in Terre Haute where Rose-Hulman is, you can buy alcohol if your underage. All you have do when you go the liquor store and they ask for ID is accidentally give them your Rose ID and they sell you the stuff. There really isn't any limits put on the Rose students.

If Stan reads it, he will learn that Hoosier is "surprised", and Hoosier speculates that "they don't have much of a risk management problem there". Maybe Stan can use some of his recently-received scholarship money to take a speed reading/improving comprehension course this fall. Maybe a Dale Carnegie "Making Friends and Influencing People" course too. Or maybe a Rodney King "Can't we all just get along" seminar. If Stan shoots from the hip and insults people for no reason around the DSP-SDSU house, it's no wonder his ideas and efforts get ignored (as he earlier whined). I know two frequent posters here who ignore Stan. |
If y'all only knew how ironic Hoosier's comment about "How to Win Friends and Influence People" really is...
Definitely a great read. Stan, what book did you get in the mail today? |
Well, judging by your insipid comments about NPHC and the fact that you HAVE visited frat row, I'd imagine more people ignore you than me :D
I don't have to shoot from the hip and insult people. I said you trespassed on SDSU Fraternity property, and I questioned whether or not you did the same thing in this case. If you didn't, good. "Maybe Stan can use some of his recently-received scholarship money to take a speed reading/improving comprehension course this fall. Maybe a Dale Carnegie "Making Friends and Influencing People" course too. Or maybe a Rodney King "Can't we all just get along" seminar." Don't talk about insults when you write tripe like this. You've said some stupid things that have upset FAR more people than I've said. Maybe YOU should read Carnegie's book. You're always wrapped up in what we're doing wrong instead of persuing what could help/benefit us. |
Stan, what book did you get in the mail today?
1 - "My Lie" by Bill Clinton 2 - "Converting your chapter's new living room into a dump" by an anonymous SDSU GLO 3 - "Successful Election Strategies" by Gray Davis |
lol it certainly isn't Delta Sig's living room, because we're always the first to get cleaning and construction service because our courtyard and living room are always the first on the row to be clean and ready, so, you couldn't possibly be talking about me or DSP :D
And if you and your wide knowledge taken from your 15 minutes here wants to dispute that with a guy who's lived here for two years...then I don't even know what to tell you... |

If I wanted to put beer in my chapter house's vending machine, I'd put it in a regular machine full of coke, etc.
Just put the Beer under the Nestea slot and no one will ever find out. |

Like Warm Clam Juice or something equally unappealing. :p |
I wonder how many times they have to refill it.
