You let the telephone ring about 10 times, and you did not get upset if you could not reach someone right then....you just assumed they were not home.....

APhi Sailorgirl 07-19-2004 01:59 PM

When you told your parents you were going out, that meant out in the neighborhood to play some game or ride on your big wheel (mine was rainbow brite:D )

And if for some reason your parents needed you before dark (b/c everyone went home then) they could just yell from your porch and you would hear them.

Computers didn't use Windows

You had to type in almost an entire page of code to send an e mail and even then it could only go to someone else in your company

It was really cool to layer a sweater over a button down shirt which was in turn over a turtleneck

Remote controls had a cord that connected them to the television

A new show called The Real World consisted of cameras following a group of people 24/7. What a weird concept! It'll never catch on...

People used typewriters and if you made a mistake you needed either white out or correction tape. Or, if you were really cutting edge, you had a correction ribbin in the typewriter.

KillarneyRose wore a size 4

I have some more...

... TVs didn't have remotes
... Cable wasn't offered in your area
... TVs could tune channels 2-13, and maybe you could pull in a UHF station or two if you had a good antenna
... Black and white TVs (!)
... A 300-baud modem was fast
... You wanted to buy a home computer, and your choices were IBM or Apple ... or, there was no such thing as a home computer
... You picked up a pay phone to make a collect call, and a human operator handled the call
... Pay phone calls cost a dime
... You called any business (utility, etc) and a human being instead of an IVR system answered the phone
... Phone numbers started with two letters: HUnter 6-1234
... Having to make sure you were putting UNleaded gas in your car

hannahgirl 07-19-2004 03:58 PM

gas cost less than a dollar!

I think the Orignial "He-Man" Cartoon show was a little better than Cartoon Network's Updated Version.

Rudey 07-19-2004 05:26 PM

Umm there were IBM compatibles I think right from when IBM was selling PCs to families.

I had a Vic 20 to start with. Strange little system. Before the Commodore there were a couple small little computer companies too.

Tandy was the brand that Radioshack bought I believe.

If there weren't, they followed soon thereafter. A lot of people in the mid-80s still felt that if they were going to get an IBM-compatible computer, they should just buy from IBM. Some of the clones were better, and some were cheaper, and some were more geared toward families' computing needs rather than businesses' needs (IBM is not called International Business Machines for nothing), but you really had to know what was out there.

Anyone else remember the TRS-80? (Trash-80)

I had a TRS-80 attached to a color TV from the store "TG&Y." I thought that I was cool stuff because I knew some BASIC.
