How Big Are You?

I was wondering how large your particular organization is?
For example, the Sigma Kappa website boasts a membership of 138,900 members and 245 collegiate & alumnae chapters.
However, I don't know how accurate this is b/c the #'s were the same when I went through RUSH so I don't know the last time it was updated.

Also, my particular chapter has a membership of ~50-60 ladies. I'm not too clear on the exact #. The numbers vary from chapter to chapter so ours is a small one.

I had heard once that we were the 3rd largest sorority but I'm not sure how accurate that is either. Besides, does large mean #'s of members or #'s of chapters? I don't know.

PhiPsiRuss 07-15-2004 10:22 PM

Phi Kappa Psi

Phi Psi has about 105,000 members, 90 chapters, 5 colonies, and 41 alumni associations.

Our average chapter size is 46, which is highest in the NIC.

Our Numbers are infinite and our names are legion.

Tremble as we sweep across the world . . ..

kddani 07-15-2004 10:34 PM

As of summer of 03 KD has: 177,501 members. By now we should be well over 180,000

486 chartered alumnae chapters- more than any other NPC

I believe 127 active college chapters.

Not sure of average chapter size.....

AUDG 07-15-2004 10:53 PM

As of June 2003, DG has:

143 active chapters
1 colony
285 alumnae groups
Average chapter size of 100

KillarneyRose 07-15-2004 10:57 PM

Delta Zeta:

165 college chapters
250 alumnae chapters
I'm not sure how many sisters we have, exactly.

ragtimerose 07-15-2004 11:32 PM

Beta Sigma Phi:

over 100,000 members (forget the exact count) in 30 countries. That's a lot of sisterhood happening. :)

ambición6 07-15-2004 11:40 PM

Wow!!! some of your orgs are impressive. I hope my Familia grows to be that size one day.

I'll let some A Phi expert post on our exact numbers, but as for my own chapter, we are at 33 girls before Formal Recruitment. Total is 40 on our campus.

KSUViolet06 07-15-2004 11:55 PM

Last I heard:

107 collegiate chapters (in 30 states and Germany)
3 colonies
151 alumnae chapters (all 50 states, Australia, The Phillipines, Germany, the UK, and Japan)

Apparently we have a membership of about 107,000 women worldwide (as of last Convention)

We're growing fast too
:)

bluefish81 07-15-2004 11:59 PM

According to the Theta website we have:

Everytime I see the name of this thread I have my mind in the gutter. Either that or I think it's a thread on how fat GCers are.

How can it be possible to have an average chapter size of 100? Am I underestimating the number of HUGE chapters out there? I would have thought that there are way more medium-sized Greek systems than that. But maybe DG is just at ALL of the bigger schools and not as many of the smaller ones? Still, I would be really surprised (in a good way!) if this is true.

AUDG 07-16-2004 01:53 AM

I dunno, I got it off of the website here: http://www.deltagamma.org/dg_fun_facts.shtml

I remember from Stats class that just a few really large numbers can totally skew a statistic. A better judge of "average" is the median.

Well when you take into account that most of our small chapter have 50-60 women in them and our biggest chapter has over 200.....there are many in the middle that boast 100+. It all works out in the end...

Our top 5 chapters -
Alpha Psi-Mississippi: 224
Alpha Iota-Oklahoma: 215
Mu-Missouri: 211
Alpha Nu-Southern California: 204
Gamma Zeta-Louisiana State: 196

Well, according to our National website, Chi Omega has:

240,000 initiated members
Over 170 collegiate chapters (I *think* we're at 174?)
Over 230 active alumnae chapters

ISUKappa 07-16-2004 09:03 AM

Kappa Kappa Gamma:

* 131 chapters
* 200,000 + initiated members
* 330 active Alumnae Associations

Mooch279 07-16-2004 09:24 AM

From the AOII website:
Alpha Omicron Pi has chartered 178 collegiate chapters, and over 320 alumnae chapters located throughout the United States and Canada since its founding in 1897. AOII's membership exceeds 125,000 strong, successful and caring women.

NIC

one can do all kinds of things with numbers.
The NIC has issued, sporadically, the average chapter sizes,
the official colonies, and now interest groups. And there are
likely some unrecognized, or sub-rosa or what have you.
I think Pi Kappa Alpha and SAE overwhelmingly have the largest
average chapter sizes. Kappa Sig is large, so is Sig Ep; the others, well, contact NIC. They would most likely be the most
accurate, figure-wise. Sororities have shot out of sight...
TKE continues to lead with number of active chapters, but then
they have the most, by far, inactive ones. The average size of
TKE chapters looks small 'cause of chartering on small campi with
small chapters. A bone of contention with many....
Alumni....some have been dead a long time. Lambda Chi, founded in 1909 and Sig Ep, 1901, are likely to have a higher
percentage of alums living, than, say, Deke or DU or SAE.
Colonies...are they reactivations, new charters or what? What's
an interest group? What other definitions? Are urban chapters
counted as one or how many, may have as many as ten schools
in "chapter."
Yes, things have changed. But we all love our groups.

ATO/terp 07-16-2004 09:46 AM

From the Alpha Tau Omega Website ( dont knw how old it is)

ATO annually ranks among the top ten national fraternities for number of chapters and total number of members. ATO has more than 240 active and inactive chapters with more than 181,000 members and more than 6,500 undergraduate members.

Its not sporadic, and when the last NIC numbers were released, we had the highest average chapter size; 46. Since those numbers were released, we've climbed to 49.

Thanks to a few generous alumni, we're now at over $18 million. This is the highest outright, and on a per chapter and per capita basis. And we're still growing at a very fast rate. :D

These figures can usually be found on the national website of the particular organization. However, you have to take into account that some websites are somewhat dated so you tend to have a general estimate.

CORRECTION: Sigma Kappa is not the third largest sorority. The figures posted were inaccurate due to the fact that it's been a while since the #'s posted on the website were reconfigured. They could be higher or lower. When & if I find a reasonalble and accurate #, I'll post it.

It's good to see that Greek Life is reall growing & expanding! Keep up the good work.

TSteven 07-16-2004 02:39 PM

Here are two separate lists. The first list is of fraternities with more than 100 chapters. (I did not include colonies or affiliates) The second list is fraternities with more than 100,000 total initiates.

Please do not shoot the massager here. I got the following statistics from the Fraternities Executives Association's web site. Last updated on Monday, May 17, 2004.

http://www.fea-inc.org/fratern.htm

My understanding is that each fraternity's information is provided by the fraternity. So how up to date the statistics may be is depended on each fraternity.

FYI: From the information provided, you can not divide the total number of initiates by number of chapters to get an average chapter size. The number you would get would be the total number of initiates per chapter. To get the historical average chapter size you would then need to divide that number by the total cumulative number of years for all active chapters.

To find the current average chapter size, you would need to know the number of current active members divided by the current number of chapters. The web site does not provide this information.

For example. Fraternity ABC is listed with two chapters and 120 initiates. Chapter A has had 60 members for 3 years while Chapter B has had 60 members for 2 years. If you were to divide 120 by 2 you would come up with 60. But the accurate chapter average would be 24. How would you get there is to divide 120 (total initiates) by 5 (each active year of each chapter - 3 for Chapter A and 2 for Chapter B.) Thus 120/5 = 24.

Perhaps you can you tell I'm a statistics nerd. :D
