DG Songs
During Rush, and Ritual, and Serenades... it seems that we are always singing the same songs. I was wondering else you guys sing.
RUSH- When you go Away to College, Do I see an Anchor in your Eye, DG under the sea (we made up this for theme day), In the mood, Big Toe (I'm sure you guys don't use this one either), I think that's it... SERENADES- A DG & her Boyfriend, & Heartless Hanna - of course! And the ONLY Cheer we ever use is Ruh, Rah, Ramma! Can you all please help me! I would very much like to get more songs - Cheers especially! ITB |

Don't you want to be a DeeGee too? I was Delta Gamma Born and Delta Gamma Bred and when I die I'll be Delta Gamma Dead... So rah rah for DeeGee, rah rah for DeeGee Rah Rah for Delta Gammaaaaa |
hey ladies...i have not heard of half these songs so if you could please email them to me i would appreciate it!!! georginadepalma@hotmail.com
also, for our last Fall Recruitment, a few of our sisters redid the words to Nellys...Ride With Me...i thought it was the cutest song ever...so I figured i would write the words on here for you all to see them! here they are: Where they at? (8 times) If you wanna go and take a ride wit me To learn more 'bout the sisters of Delta Gee And why that we feel this way? (Hey, must be Dee Gee) If you wanna join a sorority A feel of sisterhood like the girls of Delta Gee And why that we feel this way? (Hey, must be Dee Gee) In the new school, new town, feel so right Lookin, tryin ta spot someone real nice Lookin for a little place where I know I'll feel at home (feel at home) We can be hangin' out (hangin' out) on a Friday night or helpin the blind with Service for Sight But as long as you got your friends girl, you know its on (you know its on) I see someone comin towards me who's so much more Honest and real true And sayin' she's my sister is somethin that I love to do I'm always there for you And that ain't nothin new Dee Gee is friendship, loyalty, and sisters too I like the way you're always there And I like those stylish letters you wear I like the way you always seem to care And i can see you smilin way over there (repeat chorus) |

lisa,
i know the year before...Fall 2000...when i rushed...DG had reworded the lyrics to Mambo #5 using all of their own names...but i do not know the lyrics...i will try and find out for ya though... ITB*~ georgina |
omg the Nelly remake was way cute! One of the fun things they had in a skit was a little twist on Jay-Z's song H to the izzo...they instead sang "D to the izzo, G to the izzay"...it was really funny
|
|
we don't sing a lot of those songs either. if any one has any new cheers or songs, let me know or email them to me (uadg@yahoo.com) it would be really cool to get some new stuff going in the chapter.
for recruitment in 2000 we did a remake of george michael's Faith which was really cute. |
dear dg
I am a Delta Gamma at northern illinois university and i know that we sing dear dg a lot at ceremonies.... I do not know the words right off the top of my head but if anyone would like them just feel free to email me!

You wanna know the funny thing? The tri-delt rho chi at our school was the one to teach us the Delta Gamma born and Delta Gamma bred song...
Here's one that we use a lot... I've drawn a complete blank on any others, though! Delta, Delta Gamma I'm so happy, that I am-a Delta, Delta Gamma With my sidekick, A little Hannah When you see the DG's walking You will see the other's talking How they wish that they could be Just like me a, a little DG |
BTW... What are serenades? I saw it on one of the DG's websites, but I have no clue what y'all are talking about.

and oh yeah, there's a song too. we used to sing it at round 2 of rush after the hectic first round where the rushees had to visit 18 houses. it's really fast and fun and everyone gets a kick out of it! does your big toe have a blister from the walking that you've done? have you done so much small talking that you've almost swallowed your tongue? are your smiling muscles cramping and living's just no fun? unh uh! does your big toe have a blister from the walking that you've done? |
what tune does it have?
i want to sing it to the "do your ears hang low" but i dont know if that is right! i could just be weird and crazy!! noreen eta: no smart comments on the weird and crazy!! haha...i know what you are all thinking! :p |
Somewhere There is A DG
We sang this new song during rush, because our theme was the WIzard of OZ:
Somewhere there is a DG(to the tune "Somewhere Over The Rainbow") Somewhere There is a DG very near, She's a friend I can count on when no one else is here. Delta Gamma is friendship always true. When college days are over, Hannah will not leave you. Our time for happiness is now cause sisters we will always be forever... Our times of joy will certainly continue for eternity, we're bound together. When we chose Delta Gamma, we did find, Love and understanding, Frienships of every kind. |
Alpha Epsilon songs
When I was a collegian--I graduated two years ago--I created a songs page for my chapter website. We have words to most of the songs you've all mentioned and a couple that you haven't.
http://www.restech.wustl.edu/~dgamma/dgsongs.htm My favorite that you haven't mentioned is probably "Mmm, Mmm My Sisters" or "What Does It Mean to be A Sister?". "What Does It Mean to be A Sister?" is to the tune of "Friends" by Michael W. Smith. I'd be happy to help any of you with tunes--just PM me. ITB, Angie |
Singing Traditions
From hearing everyone talk, it seems like so many of y'all sing lots of songs. We hardly do any singing, except during rush! Even then, it's not really singing...it's more like screaming our heads off! Our door song is D-E-L-T-A, and when we're leading the girls out of the house, we sing the "Delta, Delta Gamma, I'm so happy, that I'm a..." song. Our skits change every year, but we don't use the older songs that I've seen in the songbook. Ole Miss doesn't have a Songfest or anything, either, so we hardly ever have an opportunity to sing DG songs (and most of us don't know them anyway :( ).
When we have a candlelight, we sing "Going to the Chapel." What kinds of singing traditions do y'all have? |
Doesn't anybody sing "Dream Girl" anymore? What a shame. It's a beautiful song, written just for DG. One of the DG songbooks even has the different parts written out.

We sing Dream Girl constantly! It was my absolute favorite song when I went through recruitment, but I have to admit I'm starting to get a little tired of it. It's completely beautiful though! I think practicing it for prefs just wore it a little thin...
|
I love Dream Girl! The only time my chapter sang it was during candlepasses, so I can never hear it enough! (Sure, I say that now... :) )
My favorite DG song is probably "When You Go Away to College", although a CDC taught me a pretty song to the tune of "Dona Nobis Pachem" that I would love to hear a chapter sing. |
post the lyrics!
|
Dee Gee and the Anchor
Now they are mine Love and sisterhood Through our lifetime (It is either "our lifetime" or "my lifetime"). Enjoy! |
A convention in DC a few years ago they gave all chapters a CD with the DG songs on it plus a binder with the lyrics. You might check with EO to see if they are still available. I liked being able to hear the tune to the songs as well as have the words.
|
Wow, my chapter must be a lot different than all of yours...
I've been in my chapter for almost 3 years now and I've never heard "When You Go Away to College" or "Big Toe"... And we've only sang "Dream Girl" twice... But we do have a lot of fun songs we sing during Fall Recruitment. This first one is to the tune of "High Flying Flag" We're the Dee Gee Crew and we're welcoming youuu To our house full of friendship and fun :::::clap clap::::: Let us tell you offfffff the house we loveeeeeeeeeee The house that we know is for you :::::clap clap::::: Oh our hearts beat true for the bronze, pink and blueeee And our anchors and sisters too :::::clap clap::::: So remember us at Delta Gee and keep your eye on the Dee Gee Crew :::::clap clap::::: This other one, we do for a different day/phase of Fall Recruitment (Just clap throughout the entire song at an even/sort of fast pace) Ohhhhh I wanna be a dee geeee Oh yes, Oh yes, Oh yes I do I wanna be a dee geeeee And wear the bronze and pink and blue Drop your anchorrrr, Come and beeee, Part of our sororityyyyy We love Dee Geeeeeee, So will youuuuu, If you drop your anchor too |
Thank you for posting those lyrics! I have never heard the song that goes to "Your A Grand Old Flag" but I am taking the words to my chapter so we can start practicing! We are always looking for new songs!
|
Dream Girl is my favorite too (obviously--i.e. my signature) and I sing it to my baby as a lullaby. I also sing her the one that goes "Out of my window, looking at the night / I can see your anchors shining bright / Swiftly flows the river to the sea / And your anchors do go silently / D G, I would like to go with you / I would like to sail the ocean blue..." She loves both of them! :)
I think the problem that most people are having is confusing the DG songs that are used for all the rituals with the chants (even the chants that are sung to a tune) from recruitment. That's why some people are like "I've never heard of that song..." Also, I'm not sure if the song that Delta Iota sings for Senior Installation is a chapter thing, or if everyone uses the same one...but if there's a DG from UGA reading this, could you post the lyrics? I love that song and I tear up every time I hear it, but I can't remember the words. |
"When You Go Away to College" Is probably my favorite DG song. During my last collegiate year there were a few of us (myself included) that couldn't get through it without tearing up.
We have a small group (a triple trio) that sings O' Captain. Is anyone else familiar with that song? It's probably my favorite to sing. i was speaking with an alumna from another chapter and they sing a different table grace....I thought "Lord now the board" was the only one...what are the lyrics to the other? |
Gracious Lord
We ask thy blessing On thy bounty which we share May Delta Gamma live forever 'Neath thy guidance and they care. We sang that, standing behind our chairs, before we sat down to dinner (I'm tearing up, remembering those great days). I believe it and others are in the DG Songbook, available from EO. |
sorry to crash.
I've had it stuck in my head forever... On my campus (U of Tulsa) they'd sing something that went: "DG, DG, Sweeter then a honeybee, DG to the bone" There was a whole song, but that's all I remember... Sorry. |
Found this at the DG web site. Don't know the tune...sounds like a cute song, though.
Anchor of Gold She wears an anchor of gold And we are told, she's a DG to the bone If you see that girl walking down the street You can't leave that girl alone She's got eyes like a jewel, teeth like a pearl Gosh, oh gee, she's a gift to this world She wears an anchor of gold And we are told, she's a DG to the bone Delta Gee we love you, Delta Gee First day of rush you go to all the houses Second day of rush you're back where ours is Delta Gee we love you, Delta Gee We'll take Delta Gee, you know we love you Delta Gee |
Quote:
Dg to the boney, bone, bone When you see her walking down the street You better leave her a-lone She'd got eyes like stars, Teeth like pearls She's much cuter than the other girls DG, DG Sweeter than a honey bee DG to the bone |
^^^^ Ahh!!!! Bringing back great memories of going house to house, serenading, then presenting our pledge classes to each other :D

I love "Will You Wear Our Anchor," which we used to sing at prefs. I know a lot of girls didn't like it, though. |
I loved Will You Wear Our Anchor. I pretty much liked all the songs, though there were a couple I wasn't as crazy about as others. The one they sang at installation was, I've since discovered, Now and Forever by Carole King. Here are the lyrics if you're curious:
Now and Forever You were a part of me And the memory cuts like a knife Didn't we find the ecstasy Didn't we share the daylight When you walked into my life Now and forever I will remember All the promises still unbroken And think about all the words between us The never needed to be spoken We had a moment Just one moment That will last beyong a dream, beyond a lifetime We are the lucky ones Some people never get to do All we got to do Now and forever I will always think of you Didn't we come together Didn't we live together Didn't we cry together Didn't we play together Didn't we love together And together we lit up the world I miss the tears I miss the laughter I miss the day we met and all that followed after Sometimes I wish I could always be with you The way we used to do Now and forever I will always think of you Now and forever I will always be with you |
