How did Seventeen impact your life?

I can't believe the magazine is turning 60!

the magazine brings back a lot of memories of growing up. i still have fun reading it now

I remember when it turned 50.... wow, i must've been 13... Their 50th issue was a great one, I still remember it

I remember reading it faithfully. I just got a "Seventeen" style comforter from JC Penney for my daughter's room and it came with a coupon for a year free of Seventeen. She got her first issue last week.. but.. she's only 10! She loved it though. It had Hilary Duff on the cover. It's so strange to see her go from Highlights to Seventeen.. just like I did!

I wrote a paper on it for my semantics class. It was about agenda setting. My paper basically explored how magazines like Seventeen contribute to the consumption habits of young ladies by showing ads even when they don't know what they're seeing is ads. After a talley of how much space was used for ads vs. articles, (I included any kind of product placement/use type articles as ads) I came up with about 80% of the magazine being devoted to advertisers.

Was a good paper. Got a 99% :D

I remember going from Highlights, then to Bop and Teen Beat, then I graduated to Ym and Seventeen. I always got jealous because much of the clothes featured in the issues were from stores that we didn't even have in Hawaii.

Figures...they did a campus feature on the University of Hawaii a year after I graduate. :(

I was such a big fan of seventeen and teen.
Those two magazines were my teen bible growing up when it came to fashion, makeup and boy advice.


My favorite seveenteen mag was that of brooke shields doing a fashion show of clothes and her personal beauty tips for a new school yr edition.

The first issue I got was the December 1991 one with Shannen Doherty on the cover. The issue also had a nice profile on Kimberly Williams, who was making her movie debut in Father of the Bride. Anyone actually going to send Seventeen an email about their experience?

It didn't. I was a Sassy girl.

Sassy--before they changed, went all YM, and then folded--was THE BEST. My mother got subscriptions for my sister and I.

I LOVED Sassy! It was the best magazine.

Sassy is technically Jane now. Well, it was started by the same people. These days it's all Lucky for me :)

Is it really? I never knew that! But when I was younger, Sassy was the best! That was the only magazine I'd read. Now I read Jane, so now it makes sense that they're by the same people.

seventeen showed me all these perfect girls....hmm, yea, it kind of pissed me off and that's about it

I started on Teen and Seventeen, but I loved loved loved it when Sassy came out. At first it was less girly-girl, which was awesome. Then it just sucked. -sigh-

I picked up Jane a few months ago and hated it. While I could give Sassy or Seventeen or CosmoGirl to most 7th and 8th grade girls, I'd say Jane is definitely aimed at HS seniors and adults. I found it more on a line with Rolling Stone in terms of maturity and language, which I kind of found disappointing, since I loved Sassy...

I remember subscribing to Teen first, and then Seventeen...Seventeen seemed SO sophisticated and "New York" as my mom put it when I was first gettting into teenage magazine mode. There was a story in there on what order to apply your makeup that I think I STILL follow - because I had no clue about that stuff.

Jane is definitely aimed at college age girls and 20-somethings who remember Sassy. It's never been promoted as a teenage magazine.

alll those wonderful how to pictures of how to roll your hair...complete with the occasional juice can.

Same here! I loved both magazines! :) I still look at Seventeen when I am on break at work :o

I bought my first Seventeen Magazine when I was 12. We had a subscription until my little sister went to college. I secretly read it then even though I was in college and had moved on to Elle. I remember Jennifer Connelly was on the cover a lot.

I remember being about 17 going to churchcamp (it was a 9 hour car ride for us - I grew up in the middle of Nowhere, TX) and none of us guys had anything to read, so we read the girls' magazines. They had seventeens and I can remember the first one I ever picked up and the first thing I ever read was a letter to the fashion chick and it was some poor teen chick asking if she was a freak because she had little black hairs growing around her nipples. It was at that point I realized I was in over my head.

I use to read Seventeen and YM but I liked Seventeen better because they talked about issues that ALL girls face and they were more diverse in their models.

I loved Seventeen growing up. Sassy (RIP :( ) and YM were also staples in my home. I've tried, but I just can't get into Jane.

My favorite issue of Seventeen was ALWAYS their back to school issue. It always had the latest fashions, make-up, advice, etc.
