Widescreen vs. Fullscreen
When you buy a DVD and you are given two choices between widescreen fullscreen, which one would you buy?
|
i like widescreen better. it just looks cool.
|
Widescreen if I have a widescreen TV?
-Rudey |
I'd definitely get Widescreen, especially if you have a widescreen TV. The aspect ratio would look better, and for regular format, they cut out a portion of each shot. I buy all mine in Widescreen.
|
Fullscreen-letterbox drives me nuts...especially if you have the subtitles on and they're not in the letterbox like they should be.
|
I usually don't care either way, whatever I pick up first really.
|
what ever is available really... i usually buy DVDs used so it's whatever is left. prefer widescreen but it doesn't matter either way.
|
Over the next few years, all of the new consumer TV sets will be moving to the 16x9 aspect ratio format (widescreen), so it doesn't make much sense to me to by equipment that won't be "compatable."
All HDTV sets will use 16x9. |
Widescreen. Because one day, I plan on being rich enough to buy one.
|
Widescreen.
Our TV has a 16:9 aspect ratio.... watching fullscreen movies on it is a PITA. (you can adjust it, but it looks all smushed) |

And since almost everything is available both ways, I'd rather have more of the movie to fit within my screen than to make the movie fill up my screen. |
I worked at Hollywood Video when DVDs first got big, and you have no idea how many came back complaining of the "two black stripes on the top and bottom of the screen", and you'd be laughing at how pissed they got when I had to break it to them that those we're the only ones available.
Course, I worked in the ghetto, and they still never got that widescreen is the best way to watch them. They also complained if they got a spanish subtitled VHS...and they'd get mad if we didn't have the regular kind...it's like "DEAL WITH IT"...it's just words, you can block them out if you watch long enough. |
Widescreen definitely
|
Widescreen.
Fullscreen chops off the sides to acheive a 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Most movies have a 1.85:1, 2.00:1, 2.20, or 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Widescreen TV sets and displays have a 1.78:1 (16x9) aspect ratio. |
wide screen because my parents just gave me their wide screen tv so they can buy a plasma tv
|
I didn't realize how many people liked widescreen. No wonder it's so popular! I can't stand it though. Give me full screen any day (unless I'm watching a movie on a widescreen tv!) Widescreen is so squished, I can't see a thing!
|
Full screen all the way!
|
WIDESCREEN

I heard today on the radio that some manufacturers are going to continue making 3x4 aspect ratio TV's for a while. Buying one would be dumb, though. Confused? |

As far as squished, that's probably from 16x9 sets using stertch modes for 4x3 programming. Most TV manufacturers use poorly implemented stretch modes. The only one that I've seen that gets it right is Loewe. Most TV, that isn't live, is now produced widescreen. That means that you either watch it with black bars on the top and bottom, or that the sides (pan and scan) are chopped off, and you are not seeing the whole picture. |
Widescreen most def

wide screen...full screen is just a generic, bootleg version.
|
Wide screen, for sure.
|
We only buy widescreen-- but we have a 55" hdtv widescreen tv in the family room. And a 40 something" widescreen in the bedroom (not sure why--that was husbands doing.)
|
Ya'll some rich folks on this thread!

Not to say I don't like it, but... it was definitely a pre-me purchase :) I think had I had a say we'd have something at least a *little* bit more reasonable! |

You're right, actually. Having the huge screen is pretty cool. Having a bohemoth of a tv taking up part of the living room is not. I think the actual box stands 6+ feet tall (it's definitely taller than me, and I'm 5'7"), by almost as much wide, and probably 2 - 3 feet deep. That's a big footprint.
I don't hate our tv.... but I do think it could go on a diet :) |
I just hate it when I'm at work at blockbuster and people can't understand that when you rent a DVD 90% of the time it's going to be WIDESCREEN! Unless you have the option of picking from the on-screen menu it will have those bars at the top and the bottom. That's why you bought a DVD player, to see things how the director intended it! Unless you buy a DVD in Fullscreen I can't help you! :p
I prefer widescreen...when I do stuff for class I usually shoot in widescreen because it's a cleaner shot! |

I agree with you, the tv just takes up too much space and needs a diet!! :) |
Widescreen.
