Walmart, Target, or something else?

Just wondering who shops at Walmart, Target or some place else?

I LOVE Walmart. It has everything including groceries, the prices are great and its a one stop shop. I go there like 4 times a week. The place rocks. I seriously couldnt live without it.

I live in a small town with like 3,000 people so we have to go 15 mins outside of town just to a Walmart. They are building a Target near it now, but I hate Target.

To me it just seems like a overpriced knock off of Walmart. Everything I see there is so much more and I could get it cheaper at Walmart. I cant stand to go there anymore.

Where does everyone else shop?

Peaches-n-Cream 06-30-2004 04:57 PM

I have never been to Walmart or Target. My sister bought a really cute bathing suit at Target which makes me want to check it out.

bluz4 06-30-2004 04:58 PM

personally i LOVE target. the walmart around my house is junky-looking and just does not seem to be clean or professional. i went there today actually because i needed claritin and it took me 20 minutes just to find a line with a cashier. i ended up just going to a lane where i could ring my own stuff up.

target has great clothes, a great food shop and just great all around people. plus it sells my dog's food "pedigree" for about the same low price as petsmart.

TARGET or TARJAY (as my fashion-minded coworkers say) rules!

CUGreekgirl 06-30-2004 05:01 PM

Well, I think we covered this for me in the Dating thread... but

WALMART....

I go at least 3 times a week, and if I'm bored sometimes more than that. Its about the only store we have around here anyway. Plus its great because you can get everything you need at once (my Walmart even has a gas station).

I do enjoy Target too though, there just isn't one anywhere around here.

sigtau305 06-30-2004 05:03 PM

I've been to Wal-Mart a couple of times. It's not too bad of a store.

winneythepooh7 06-30-2004 05:10 PM

I live in Target. I go there at least twice a week. Don't make fun of me but I even by clothes in there. Most of my friends do too. I like Walmart but the closest one is in Valley Stream Long Island which is a bitch to get to. Sometimes I will go there when I go upstate to visit my 'rents but Target is my one-stop shop so I would much rather go there. Tar-zhay all the way!

DeltaSigStan 06-30-2004 05:40 PM

All the rednecks in high school always said "THE Walmart"

"I'm going to The Walmart to buy socks"

"I need stop by The Walmart to get some soda"

So, I say it too...

I don't care that Walmart enslaves their employees...if I can get a nice cotton blend t-shirt for three bucks, then go me.

aephi alum 06-30-2004 05:44 PM

Neither!

I won't shop at Walmart because the staff is rude. They actually go out of their way to be nasty.

I won't shop at Target because they did some nasty, sneaky, and underhanded things to get permission to build a store in my town, and lied to the homeowners nearby. Yeah, that's how you get ahead in corporate America, but they were egregious. Nobody in my town will set foot there.

Thankfully we have alternatives... :)

cutiepatootie 06-30-2004 06:12 PM

I love Wal Mart and Target and Ross!!!!! they all are the best! and i can even go into a 99cent only store or a dollar tree and find cute little no nothing items.

I can also go into macys or dillards and find things there too.

I am not snobbish where i can find a deal!

IowaStatePhiPsi 06-30-2004 06:19 PM

I avoid Wal-Mart at all costs because of their labor and business practices.

There was a debate in Chicago about allowing Wal-mart in the city...I believe one will be opening on the west side pretty soon.

I'm a Target a.k.a Tar-jhey chica myself.

Agreed, the Wal-Mart around here is the same way.

AXGidget 06-30-2004 06:41 PM

Definetly Target

I can never leave that store empty-handed...:)

I agree. I don't care how cheap it is. Plus the fact that the lighting in the stores gives me a headache. I sincerely hope that the class action lawsuit knocks them down several pegs.

I go to Target and K-mart, but I still miss Phar-Mor. That was the best store EVER.

Rollergirl2001 06-30-2004 06:51 PM

Target, because it's the closest at my house.

SSS1365 06-30-2004 07:26 PM

Target, because the Wal-Marts I have been to are disorganized and disgusting.

The1calledTKE 06-30-2004 07:29 PM

Depends. If I am going for better quality stuff, Target. If I am looking for a good deal, Walmart.

Co-sign. There's an article in the NYTimes today about how a lot of groups that connect investors with socially conscious corporations are ceasing to refer potential investors to Wal-Mart. It just reminded me what a repugnant company it is.

I don't really go to Target, either. I prefer small businesses where the people really know what they're selling.

Ditto, plus I don't like cheap stuff. Not knocking those folks who shop there but Target, WalMart, K-Mart, Mervyns, JCPennys is all the same to me. Other places I wont shop include The Gap Inc. (includes Gap, Old Navy, and another store they own I forget at the moment)

Steeltrap 06-30-2004 07:53 PM

^^
Banana Republic, which I do shop.

As for me, I prefer Target. But Wal-Mart carries some things that I need, particularly an Almay product I need because of sensitive skin.

PlymouthDZ 06-30-2004 07:58 PM

Target for me...

I hate the lines at Wal Mart.. they are ALWAYS rediculous.. but Wal Mart is closest to my house.. so I usually go there.. Target is a 15-20 minute drive.

bluefish81 06-30-2004 09:07 PM

Target, I love Target I go there 3-4 times a week. I live like 1.5 miles away from it and it's right by Hy-Vee so it's very convenient. Plus when I need help trying to find something, they actually help me and all of the stores are set up exactly the same (or a mirror image).
The Super Wal-Mart here scares me - it resembles a war zone, I can't find anything. I swear they get stuff in and just find an empty space on the shelves for it somewhere. Trying to find someone to help me...HA! That's funny. I read an article a while ago that compared the prices of the two and the difference was so insignificant that I can't justify driving five miles to Super Wal-Mart to save $1.97 on $60 worth of stuff. I will say that I have noticed that Wal-Marts in the South (or at least Texas) seem to be a LOT cleaner than what we have around here.

Rudey 06-30-2004 09:17 PM

If I really need something cheap I guess I'd go to Target. I've gone but since I don't have a car I have to take a bus. I don't like looking like a migrant worker coming home with bags of grocery on the bus so I don't take Target trips really.

How on earth is that possible?! Walmart is so filthy and disorganized. I refuse to shop there, even if they may carry certain items cheaper than Target or Publix. They are being sued by a group of former employees for discriminatory policies against women (i.e. store/district managers using company funds for strip club visits, mandatory meetings at Hooters and sexual harrassment on the job). Not to mention their questionable hiring practices of illegal immigrants for cleaning duties. Walmart was started by some hick in Arkansas. Target was started by businessmen in Minnesota that had half a clue how to run a company. Price difference or not, Target always gets my money. Probably more of it than I would like. :)

tinydancer 06-30-2004 10:37 PM

I like the Target that is near my house. It's kept very clean and tidy! I seem to go in there to get one little thing and come out with a whole basket of stuff. Wal-Mart moved to a new location a little farther away and I HATE it!! It is always crowded and they always have about 2 check-out lines open. It's just not worth the aggravation.

smiley21 06-30-2004 10:48 PM

i love Target. depending on where it is located, i will shop at Wal-mart. i especially love Super-Walmart and Super-Target. they rock.

you will never see me touch K-Mart with a twenty foot pole. there is one 10 min. from here near the beach that is really nice. but i won't go there. usually, the k-marts that i see are not kept very clean.

winnieb 06-30-2004 11:35 PM

I prefer Target--- but still shop at Walmart, as it is closer to home. I will buy groceries there, but not the meat--YUCK!!

And Walmart is gross, dirty, rude employees, etc. Target is clean, quiet, organized--did I mention clean.

Go to walmart and listen to their background "noise" -- "walmart has the lowest prices" "walmart is the best"---they are trying to brainwash us!!!

KillarneyRose 06-30-2004 11:39 PM

I like Target a lot. They have some really cute stuff for around the house.

I am finding that I am starting to like Wal-Mart. They DO have good prices and selection. But the clientale is just yicky.

Anyone ever hear of Big Lots? What an awesome store! You never know what you'll find there and it's dirt cheap.

mmcat 06-30-2004 11:41 PM

kmart because i can get an ongoing purchasing order there...
but i hate it.
oh well...
ditto wallmart on crowds and parking....to get in early you prettty well have to shop before 5 a.m.
and you still have to wait. (yes. i've tried it)

cntryZTA5 06-30-2004 11:46 PM

I love Target! The Wal-Mart around here is dirty with some questionable people in there. I can never find what I need in Wal-Mart.

DeltaSigStan 06-30-2004 11:52 PM

So funny, in San Diego, Target and K Mart are the dirtiest, and Walmart is practically Immaculate compared to them...

What!?!?!?!

Which locations are you shopping in????

ALL of the Target stores I have EVER been in have been very clean. Furthermore, most of the WalMart stores I have been in were disheveled messes. KMart is generally a mess too.

Dude, Stan, have you ever been into the WalMart off of the 15 freeway and Aero Drive???? That place always looks like a tornado just went through it!

Hrm...I just don't get how you and I both grew up here in San Diego and yet we seem to see everything from opposite ends of the spectrum 100% of the time......

.....Kelly :)

navane 07-01-2004 01:03 AM

Ah yes...to answer the original question...I'm a Target fan all the way. I currently live in a townhouse right behind a Target store! I'm in there all the time!

I never seem to find all of these great deals at Wallmart. It's like, instead of $4.99, an item will be $4.97. Though, every once in a while, they have a little item, like a cute belt, on the clearance rack for $1 or something like that. Otherwise, the only thing I go to Wallmart for is to buy beef jerkey at a good price. :)

DeltaSigStan 07-01-2004 01:04 AM

15 and Aero is a lot cleaner than the nearest K Mart in Clairemont.

The Walmart in the College Area is 50 times cleaner than the K mart down the road on 55th.

The Walmart in National City is MUCH cleaner than the Target down the road.....

Hahaha this is QUITE common here in NC. I'm guilty, definitely. Personally, I'd prefer to shop at Target, but since most of the Wal-Marts around here are SUPER Wal-Marts, I really enjoy buying everything in one place. The Super Wal-Mart has pretty good prices on groceries. I definitely am careful about what time and day I go. On Sundays, Wal-Mart is pretty much unmanageable.

Uhm....I disagree. The K Mart in Clairemont (which is where I live), is "clean". However, the products on the shelves always seem to be not-in-stock or in the wrong place. I don't like shopping there as their products are not that great and the selection is terrible.

Compared to the Clairemont K Mart, the Aero Drive Walmart is more cluttered with lots of extra racks and towering displays crammed into every square inch.

I have not been to any of those locations. Heh, I think the last store I shopped at in National City was Fedco!

I think the "worst" Target locations I have been in were in Mira Mesa and the Convoy/Kearny Mesa locations....but even they weren't as bad as a K Mart. The two-story Target in the Mission Valley Shopping Center is super bright, spacious and clean as is the two-story Target in Grossmont Center. One bad Target in National City does not mean that all Targets in San Diego are worse than K Mart and Walmart! :p No, I don't work for Target.... ;)

So, Stan, when are you doing to make it to one of our GC deals?

.....Kelly :)

DeltaSigStan 07-01-2004 02:58 AM

I was there....you didn't make it :(

I'll be at the next one, promise......

big lots is awesome. i got my bed and my desk from there.

KSigkid 07-01-2004 08:29 AM

Either isn't bad for something quick - the Target nearby is better than the Walmart, if for nothing else the staff is a lot friendlier.

Dionysus 07-01-2004 08:58 AM

I like target a lot better than walmart.
