greek advisor
i wanna be a greek advisor!
anyone know of any school who need/want one? any advice on the road to be one? |
Most universities require at least a masters in higher education administration/college student personnel (or something along those lines). And obviously some experience in Greek Life.
I know of 2 websites that have job listings that may include openings for Greek Life Advisors. naspa.org studentaffairs.com |
My school's greek advisor is actually just working on his masters degree. It's a school of around 15,000 students -- a D-II school.

The industry trade group for greek affairs advisors is the Association of Fraternity Advisors (AFA) and they have a web site at: http://fraternityadvisors.org
Also, PM me if you want the names and e-mail addresses of Phi Psis who are greek affairs advisors. They can probably steer you in the right direction. |
What if you got your BA in something totally diff? I know mine is in Interior Design and I am interested in getting a Masters in Higher Ed and work for a university? Do you think this hurts people if they dont have a BA for this field?
One of my sisters has a major in Fashion and she is currently working on her Masters at Akron in Higher Ed I think and she is a grad student working in the orientation/admissions office. |
Short answer, I don't think it matters. For example, my BS was computer information systems. I've also met other people who were music, secondary ed and business majors.
I don't think they really care what your degree was in, as long as you have a desire to help students. |

Pooh, Is Barry leaving? Last I heard he was the greek life director there. Back in the day Nino was the greek life director. Have no idea what he is doing now, but heard he was still with the student affairs office.
|
Yes, Barry is leaving. :(
Makes me sad, he was a good guy. Anyway, headed up to UTSA, his skills will be put to much better use. So, those are some big shoes to fill. |
Elon University in NC and Lynchburg College in VA are both looking for Greek Life Advisors. Lynchburg has a small, growing Greek community with 10-15 orgs. Elon has 20, I believe, with the addition of Delta Delta Delta in the fall. Links are below.
Elon University opening Lynchburg College opening |
We have an opening for a GA at Sac State. Apparently ours left and high tailed it to Oregon.
The deadline was today or yesterday or something but they still don't have one. We need one that is fair to NPC affiliated locals. :D |
I know this is an old topic but has anyone heard of any Greek Life positions open?
Side note: The one I have found required a masters(UNCW)...I'm not sure why this is a requirement, any ideas? |

Through being an RA and involved in Greek Life at one school, and being involved with Residential Affairs at another, I've never met anyone among my supervisors that has anything less than a Masters degree. Many I've met have more than one M.S/M.A./M.Ed, or they are using their tuition reimbursement to get a PhD/EdD.

Hi folks,
I'm just finishing up my Master of Education - Guidance and Counselling in Education. I am a Student Affairs Professional. To those of you who are wondering about why a candidate for Greek Affairs is often required to have a master's degree, I think I can help answer that. You see, I think the people who participated in a fraternity or sorority sometimes seem to think working as a Greek Life Advisor would be "just" an extension of their time as undergraduate members. However, this is not the case. Greek Affairs is but one of 30 or so sub-sections of "Student Affairs" also known as "Student Development in Higher Education" (SDHE). According to the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) website, here they are: Quote:
All areas of student affairs are concerned with the development of students....including Greeks. Look at the list above, would you want "any ol' person" serving as the director of Counseling and Psychology Services? Of the Equal Opportunity Programs? Of Judicial Affairs? No, of course not. That's why a master's degree is almost always required. A student affairs professional must understand the theories behind student development, the goals and concepts behind higher education in America, and how to effectively work with and counsel students so their needs are met. SDHE Master's programs aren't always easy to get into and the job market for this career field is extremely competitive in where I am here in Southern California (An employee at the Human Resources office told me that about 300 people apply for each 1 student affairs job at UCSD!! ). However, the jobs are very rewarding! If you are interested in pursuing a career in student affairs, check out http://www.naspa.org and http://www.myacpa.org for more info! :) .....Kelly :) |
Thank You!
Thank You for all the info. I knew this was the place to get some ideas!
Don't get me wrong I want to go back to school, but I have been running my own business for 5 years and think sometimes I have learned more in the real world than I would ever learn in school. That in no way means I don't think education is important but I do think I have tons of practice working with younger people and that should count for something. I'm currently looking into online programs since I work full time. Thanks again and keep me posted if you hear of anything! |
I have a masters degree in Higher Education (college student personnel) and it is the best decision I have ever made. I work as an academic advisor and I love it.
By the way, my bachelor's is in chemical engineering - if I can go into student affairs, anybody can. ;) |
I just started a job as a Greek Advisor a month ago!! I have a bachelors and a master's in Counseling Psychology, and spent 8 years working in the psych field before I realized that volunteering for AST was a heck of a lot more fun!!! I have been on AST staff for 6 years, so that was my experience (plus the psych experience helped with group interaction, development, and counseling/advising stuff).
I started out at a small private school where it's OK to go into a job like this without the Higher Ed Master's. Larger schools probably would favor someone with a Higher Ed master's degree because there could be less time for one on one, "on the job" training. (I'm not saying that I have no clue as to what I'm doing, but I require a little more guidance on IFC stuff because I'm not a member of an IFC group...) So far I'm having a blast!! It's really all about finding the right fit for you....I don't know if I'd ever want to work in a huge school like Indiana or Mizzou. I like the smaller schools personally. PsychTau |
Some small schools, like my alma mater, have the Greek Advisor as part of their Hall Director staff. So our Greek Advisor had his dorm duties and then his other duties included dealing with Greeks. The draw back to schools like this is that they tend to have weaker systems. In my four years, we had three advisors, two had never been Greek and one disaffiliated from an IFC and still had issues with them. These jobs without a master's are just that, lower pay and benefits.
|
UNCW has a new greek advisor and we LOVE her......we're so glad she's here!!!!
i know that with UNCW its always been a requirement to have a masters degree. the reason our last advisor left is because he wanted to eventually keep pursuing his degree further and UNCW didnt have what he would like but now we have our new advisor and we couldnt be happier :) |
I just met with the Dean of Students at Cal State Fullerton yesterday. They currently dont have a greek advisory and so the dean of students is filling in. She's not too familiar with the greek system so there have been problems. From what she told me yesterday, they will be interviewing potential candidates in December and hiring hopefully in Jan. Let me know if anyone is interested and I can give you her email.

Master in Higher Edu
Hey All
I am currently finishing up my degree in Higher Education administration and would love to help anyone out. Especially those of you who are looking into gradd school for 05. I will be grad in May 2005 and will be job searching next year. My bachelors is in Broadcasting production. Higher Education has no prerequsite degree. Do something fun and then go into higher ed. |
just to let yall know, UNCW's greek advisor is actually an interim.....which means that her position will open back up in June. I think she's going to reapply but it would be nice if others applied as well
ps - you have to have a master's degree to apply |
i think on our campus all you have to do to be an advisor is work on campus (not like student labor/work study job, but be a facalty person).
My friend Jana is a ZOX (zeta theta chi) and she got a job on campus last year as like the assistant admissions director or something like that and she is now her girls advisor. |
Middle Tennessee State University is looking for a new greek life director. Check it out : www.mtsu.edu
Good Luck! |

NASPA/ ACPA
Is anyone doing a Student affairs job search (greek affairs or otherwise) at NASPA or ACPA?
|
I did one last year at ACPA, and got a job! Let me know if you need help.
|
I attended ACPA last year also. But not as a candidate. I am trying to decide if i want to search at NASPA or ACPA. FOr me NASPA is closer since it's in Tampa (I live in Orlando). I am currently completeing my masters. I am looking for a position that has a mix of Residence Life and Greek Life.
Great on finding a job!! (I am a member of SAI also!!!) |
I could use some advice.
I'm currently doing sales for a catering company and it is hellish. I really would like to re-enter the student affairs field. I am thinking of attending the conference in Oshkosh, WI. But could use advice. In college I was an RA, student gov, AST, on two Presidential Committees and various other activies. I know I'm not ready to start my master's next year and feel like a year as a Hall Director could be good to think about where I see myself going. Any advice on which conferences to go to? I'm currently in Philly and would kind of like to stay in this area. Thanks! |
OSHKOSH
Hi--sorry I can't help you out with a position....But I live in Oshkosh, WI and I was wondering where you were looking to be a hall director at?--Melissa

I would say go to either one of the nationals, I havent heard too many good things about the regionals...then again, I work in academic advising and there are a slew of res life positions at the conventions. I have to be honest and tell you that you may not get a hall DIRECTOR position until you get your masters. But you could become an area coordinator or an assistant area coordinator or assistant director without one - it depends on the school. AC's and AAC's hire, supervise, and train the RA's and do other sorts of duties. I would target the smaller schools if I were you. Hi UCFStefanie!!!!! :D |
There are schools out there who hire students who do not have masters degrees. I would definetly look at smaller schools like syrinx said. The schools who do not have student affairs academic masters programs tend to hire those without masters degrees. From personal knowledge you are probally better off looking at OPE (in wisconsin) or SPE (in Tennessee) for those positions. I know two of my friends both went to SPE and found entry level jobs who didnt have masters. Best of luck in your search.
Hi syrinx!!!!!!! :) ETA: to fix spelling. |
OPE is where I'm planning to go at this point. The national conventions are just too expensive on my salary. I know they are probably worth their money, but I sadly do not have it. SPE...are they more likely that OPE to have jobs in the Philly area? or am i hit-or-miss. Thanks for the adivce!!!!
Melissa- Oshkosh has a huge placement exchange for res life jobs. I'm orignially from Menomonie, WI so it will be easy to see my parents in the same trip. |
UW Greek position open
The Greek Advisor position is open at the University of WA. One of the members of my alumnae chapter is working on reviewing the resumes and passed on the info to me. Here is part of her email to me.......
The position is posted on the UW Website under student services. I can tell you that the Vice President is specifically looking for someone with either experience in or a strong interest in Greek Life. Work experience in higher education is a plus. A Bachelor's Degree is required and a Master's Degree would be helpful. Other skill sets include a solid knowledge base and experience with Microsoft office. |
This isn't really a greek advisor position but it is a position working with our Associated Students.
go to www.csudhjobs.com and on position category click on MPP. it will take you to the General Manager position for ASI. This isn't an entry level position but there may a few people on GC who would be interested in it. The position is at Cal State University Dominguez Hills which is in Los Angeles County. |
