Gay Pride Parades

Are they all on the same weekend? Is it like a tribute to the whole NY stonewall thing?

Darn. I forgot to check the local gay pride calendar.

But they have been putting up banners on one of the major streets downtown.

The summer is "Pride Season" in general......Stonewall happened in the summer....I think it's just a coincidence.

I've never had the chance to go to the parade and I'll miss it this year too. :(

There's a Straight-Pride parade coming up in my town. We're all gonna go around and raise awareness about being heterosexual. We're just so proud to be straight.

We're here, we're straight, get used to it!

Jill1228 06-27-2004 02:08 PM

I think Seattle is having theirs this weekend

Rudey 06-27-2004 03:12 PM

I love looking out my window on weekend mornings. I love seeing the sail boats and the harbor from my balcony. But then I hear some awful house and techno music playing. I knew it was the gays. I just knew it. haha. The funniest thing was that there were tons of hottie girls watching the parade along the street. Ooooh Rudey likes the ladies that come out to watch the gay pride parade.

The interesting thing is that many African American gays don't participate in "mainstream" gay events for similar reasons. Not so much the techno music thing, but the lack of subtlety thing.

Explain. Meaning that they aren't ready to be out in public?

Peaches-n-Cream 06-27-2004 06:14 PM

The Gay Pride parade in NYC is quite flamboyant. Maybe it has something to do with this lack of subtlety. For example:

Less so being out in public....moreso looking into a crowd and not seeing anything that represents you or your tastes.

James 06-27-2004 10:39 PM

I have a lot of support for lesbians.

The first Pride Parade was actually a memorial/tribute to the Stonewall Riots (1:18AM Eastern Time, June 28th marks the 35 anniversary of Sylvia Rivera throwing a bottle at the cops).
From there it developed into a march for equal rights and now is a celebration of diversity. The best ones have to be Minneapolis and Denver- with so many gay and lesbian couples having families these days they've evolved Pride into a family affair.

New York's is always the last Sunday in June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots.
Last year's NYC Pride Parade took forever- the first groups across the start of the route (always Dykes on Bikes and somewhere near-behind are the Pan-Asian Bisexuals) was at Noon. My segment didnt get across the start of the line until about 1PM- well after some schmoozing with Rep. Nadler (D-NY), Rep. Frank (D-MA), and the speaker of the New York City Council.
The parade comes to a full halt and silence at 2PM for rememberance of those who have died from AIDS- kind of eerie to be on the streets with over a million people and nobody is making any noise.
The last groups of the parade didnt cross the end of the 3mile parade route down near the corner of Christopher St and Gay St until after 6PM.
> About 100,000 in the parade and over a million watching.

(I was in the parade because a part-time instructor at Iowa State is on the board of directors for the AIDS Center of Queens County and I was visiting to be persuaded to teach for the NYC school system)

Lady Pi Phi 06-28-2004 07:12 AM

This year Toronto's parade didn't get the publicity it usually gets. There's nothing about it in the paper this morning and it usually makes the front page.

It's probably because it's election day today.
