Brown Rice vs. White Rice

I've heard that brown rice is healthier. Why, and how much healthier?

Rudey 06-24-2004 08:34 PM

I hate brown rice. The best rice in the world is white basmati rice from Iran or India and it has to be prepared well - often with butter.

The rice from asian countries is peasant rice.

-Rudey
--Yes peasant rice.

ThetaPrincess24 06-24-2004 08:41 PM

I'll eat both..........I cant really taste a difference.

I think Brown rice is "natural" and white rice is "enriched" or something like that. I dont know enough about that really to really say anything.

Here's a nutritional profile for brown rice.

I'm a fan of wild rice, I'm not sure where that falls under.

James 06-24-2004 08:42 PM

Glycemic index. Supposedly Brown Rice doesn't cause the same level of insulin response that White Rice does.

WCUgirl 06-24-2004 08:57 PM

I'm w/ Dionysus on the wild rice. Yellow rice is good too.

What about dirty rice?

Does it measure differently for carb counters (Atkins, etc.)?

aephi alum 06-24-2004 09:02 PM

Basmati rice for me too. It's a pain to prepare correctly, since you must wash it carefully, but it's ohhh so good. I think it also has a relatively low glycemic index for rice, but I'm too lazy to look that up. In terms of glycemic index, I believe wild rice is the lowest.

Depends on what plan you're on. For Atkins dieters, a carb is a carb. You have your carb limit for the day, and you stick to it. For other diets (South Beach?) there is a differentiation between low and high glycemic index foods, and lower is better.

Aw man i love dirty rice, thats some good stuff but i dont know adout the nutritional fact on it though.

What's yellow rice?

The Iraqi guy probably didn't show you the good stuff. There are crappy middle eastern restaurants that serve it and just make it like regular rice. They make it like Anglos for Anglos. There are greasy middle eastern restaurants that make it oily and buttery and that's just appealing to poor people. Then there are the really authentic places that make it and it's like an art. The rice is pristine. There is an amount of butter added in. A tiny portion of the rice has saffron to make it a beautiful color. The aroma is drawn out and you can smell something wonderful - great with aromas and tastes of mint and rose that are usually in other parts of the meal.

i like brown rice better. white rice is only good when my mom makes teriaki steak with gracy and rice

CatStarESP4 06-25-2004 01:19 AM

I love brown rice, basmati and arborio (rice for risottos).

I grew up eating brown rice.

I used to live near a Malaysian restaurant. Whenever I went there for dinner, I would have this warm pudding made with black sticky rice and coconut milk for dessert. It was delicious!

I like yellow rice.
If I prefer one type of rice over another, would that make me ricest?

(I know, I know...that was corny. I'll do it myself, Blaine: -10 points)

Unregistered- 06-25-2004 08:05 AM

White or brown, I don't care...I only like sticky rice.

mmcat 06-25-2004 08:12 AM

i can tell i'm hungry.
they all sound good. i am a fan of fried rice, wild rice and minute rice, of course. mexican rice, sigh, really has to be well prepared.

AlphaFrog 06-25-2004 08:37 AM

Don't eat the Mexican Rice at Taco Bell...it's made with fryer grease, and I'm not even kidding...the recipe calls for 1 scoop of fryer grease per pan. That is about the most disgusting thing I can think of to do too...making Mexican Rice every Sat/Sun morning at 8 AM when I just got through washing the dishes from the night before at 3 AM (I don't think I had legal working condtions at Taco Bell, especially since I was 16 at the time).

AOIIBrandi 06-25-2004 08:49 AM

Brown rice, lower glycemic index and it still has the hull on it so more bran content whereas white is enriched and has been hulled. - This is really only important to dieters I suppose :D

Otherwise I love Wild rice and after that Jasmine or the short grained type rice that is stickier.

BTW to answer the what is yellow rice question, yellow rice is just white rice that has safron (sp?) added to it to give it color and flavor. Also has a couple of other things in it... You find it a lot in the south, but from what I understand it has Latin origins.

How do you know he probably didn't show me the good stuff? Now I didn't describe the bismati rice AT ALL! You get on my nerves! *hands on hips*

Someone else described the yellow rice.

Oh, and send the pm again if you tried to reply to me...I cleaned out my inbox. I'm so popular :D

It's a joke dork although we had a long war with them. In the end it's Persian cuisine made best by Persians. But I'm sure what you had was good regardless :)

There is only one place in Chicago that comes close to decent persian food if you're interested.

In additon, my understanding is the hull or the brown rice is high in fiber. Your stomach has to work harder to process the fiber in brown rice, so there for not as much is absorbed into your body. On the other hand, it is very easy for your body to break down white rice so the starch/sugar is absorbed quickly. The fiber also makes you feel full faster and the full feeling last longer.

_Opi_ 06-26-2004 10:02 AM

The only thing i can stand is bismati rice.

Brown is better for everyone - most americans don't get enough fiber in their diet and brown rice has way more fiber than white!

I LOVE brown rice much more than white rice, but i strongly prefer whole grains to processed/refined grains.

ETA: There is one exception - i LOVE sushi and therefore sushi rice! Sushi made with brown rice is okay, sushi made with sushi rice is amazing.

abaici 06-27-2004 12:24 AM

I LOVE basmati and yellow rice!!!

and, I hate brown rice.
