History of Lambda Chi

Does anyone know where I could acquire a copy of the book written about our history..."The History of Lambda Chi Alpha"? I really wanna learn more and I haven't been able to find one.

LXAAlum 03-21-2002 05:11 PM

VERY hard to find as it is out of print, and has been for some time. Although, two years ago, when cleaning out storage, they found a box at HQ, but they sold in a hurry.

Your best bet is to start with local area-chapters to see if they might have a copy you can browse through - might mean a road trip!

Or, try contacting HQ just to see if they do have any remaining copies. A brother at the local colony here had a copy that I read a while back, and it is full of all kinds of good stuff.

Hope that helps.

Who/how should I go about contacting nationals?

Corbin Dallas 03-22-2002 12:00 PM

Former chapter pres told me that the Gamma gets a form about every year, where he can order new officer manuals and such, and he ordered the book off of this form.

E-M International and they said they do not have any!! Has not been in print for several years!

I told them that if they printed that instead of the Member listing it would sell if they let it be know! Member List is to damn expensive and out dated when they print it! Wll never order another one again!

If enuff Brothers e-m them, maybe they will get off Butts and do something!

Try to have anyone you know E-M them requesting it again!!!!!!!!

Andy, that must be the reason you are called lifesaver!!!!!!!

I put on digital in 2 places to try to get guys to e-m International to get it back into print!

I think that is much more saleable than an out dated overprice Directory!:)

lifesaver 04-15-2002 03:06 AM

New LXA History Book in the works!

Brothers,

I read this thread with much interest a few months ago. Then, last week, I was reading through the newest edition of the Paedagogus (the burgundy one with the constitution and statutory code in back) and I saw that a new installment of the fraternity history is due out in 2009. So at least you've got plenty of time to save your money.

I realize that might be a long time for some of you old guys to wait...Maybe they'll do a LARGE PRINT VERSION. :D

In ZAX,
Ottor, Phi-Tau Zeta #246

P.S. Yes, I own a copy of The History of Lambda Chi Alpha.

P.P.S. No, it's not leaving my sight.

P.P.P.S. So don't ask.

scan to website?

IHQ probably wouldn't go for it, but I have a copy of the book
(where do you think I get all this crazy info from?? ;) )

and would be willing to scan it to images (.jpeg's) and put it
on our chapter history website....

but I'm sure IHQ would throw a fit (copyright). I'm going to put out
scanned images of the ThKN pledge manual sometime
this summer, maybe Ritual what and Why, etc.

JoinerLxa 06-23-2004 03:39 PM

scan to website?

oops...I accidentally started a new thread...meant to reply to
this one...couldn't delete the new thread.

I have a copy of the history book and would be willing to
scan it to jpeg images and post it on our chapter history
website.

However, I think IHQ would throw a fit about copyright
(since I'm sure they'll want to make $$$ off the new
edition when its done!)

I'm planning to put images of the pages of the
ThKN pledge manual on there sometime this summer
(if I ever get around to it!)

JoinerLxa 06-23-2004 03:41 PM

delete this!

Oops, this was supposed to be a reply to the History Book
discussion....couldn't delete this thread, maybe our
moderator can??

I "copied" the above note to a reply on the History Book.

LXAAlum 06-23-2004 05:54 PM

Oops! Backwards merged the threads.

Sorry.

This is the HISTORY THREAD.

Scanning the history book

As an undergrad, I was required to take a class on communications law. Here's what I can remember from that class, taken many years ago. Please do not construe this as legal advice, since I am not a lawyer, just a PR flack.

Whether or not GF would have a fit is hard to say. They must, howver, "agressivley protect" their copyright. Faiure to do so will lead to the loss of copyright protection. There was a case several years ago where Disney sued a day care center for painting Disney cartoon characters on their walls. They had to do it, because if they didn't, it would establish a precedent where anyone could use those characters in a similar manner and Disney would have no legal recourse.

The PR coup in that case was that Universal came in and offered them Hanna-Barbara characters (I think) to use instead. It made Disney look pretty bad. The use of the Universal characters was ok, though, because they had permission to use them.

As long as your site is not making money for you, GF would probably only make you remove the material. If you are making money from it, they could probably sue to recover that money, plus real and punitive damges, etc.

That's assuming that someone from GF finds your site and sees the pages, which they might not.

You might be better off to get permission from GF before you start. If you get it, everything would be kosher. Either way, you wouldn't be sticking your neck out.

Also, keep in mind that, as with a term paper, you may quote passages from a book, as long as you attribute them to their source. I'm not sure if there's a limit to how much of it you could quote.

I don't know any more than that. I just wanted to make sure

JoinerLxa 06-24-2004 03:28 PM

I wouldn't post pages from the History Book without permission.

I haven't asked, and probably won't for a while, since I have
alot of work to do on our chapter history website
already....unless there were an avalanche of demand ;)

Iced Gold 06-25-2004 05:18 AM

You should post it Joiner. There's all kinds of information I'd like to obtain by reading it for use right now, while i'm in school, while it's still relevant. It's a nice concept to have this as a commemeration for the centennial, but to purposely prevent brothers from obtaining knowledge from a book that hasn't been released in 10 years would be purely inexcusable.

Tom Earp 06-25-2004 04:51 PM

Ice Gold, when I call InHQ and asked about a current History book, again, they told me it was out of print. They said a new one would be out for the 100 Year Cenntenial. I than asked what about all of the people that would like to have one now?

Many of us may be dead by the time a New One Comes Out!:(

Well, was told No, kind of go sit in the corner for being a bad boy type thing.

I dont know who will be writing it, but since, "History" is supposed to stand, there will be a lot of the same thing as in Peysers Book but just updated from then.

Actually, I found Peysers book a little disjointed as a time line and references.

Maybe just me.

If there should be input, I suggest two Brothers who I will not name now, but they know who they are.

There actually is a lot of Haze in the History Book of teh Olden days as it seems to me.

But, it is still great to read.

JoinerLxa 06-26-2004 01:37 PM

I don't suppose you asked them if it was OK to post images
of the current book online, free for all to see??
