Which State Has The Worst Capital?

From my visits, I would say Trenton.

_Lisa_ 06-23-2004 10:20 AM

What is the criteria?

Kevin 06-23-2004 10:20 AM

Maybe Cheyenne, Wyoming? I drove through once. Wyoming is just desolate.

Well, in that case I'd have to say Frankfort, KY. It isn't a city by any means more like a tiny little town & a dirty one @ that. There isn't anything of interest there except for a few gas stations, some small restaurants (maybe a Cracker Barrel & Applebee's as for the only chain restaurants) & then the capital building. I've always thought that Lexington or Louisville should be the capital of KY.

KSigkid 06-23-2004 10:31 AM

As someone from CT, and from a suburb of the capital, I'm partial...but I know a bunch of people don't like Hartford.

tsuadpi859 06-23-2004 10:33 AM

Montgomery, Alabama...
the building itself is nice and there's a lot of history in the area surrounding it but the rest of the city is DIRTY....I work here and there is no way you could pay me to EVER live here....

NJ isn't a state. It is a reststop between NY and DC.

Hartford is so damn ugly. But let's just say that the only good project going on there is being done through my firm :D

Betarulz! 06-23-2004 11:36 AM

Topeka isn't too bad, but also kind of dirty...

Lincoln is a great place - definitely helped by having the University here, and it is the 2nd largest city in the state. However how many of you would want your capitol building known as the "Penis on the Prarie"?

This is "The Sower" a 19 ft tall statue on the very top of the Nebraska State Capitol building.

So you tell me, was the designer of the Capitol completely sex crazed? I mean here you have this giant phallus, and on the very tip you have a man throwing seed out across the land!

tinydancer 06-23-2004 12:04 PM

Betarulz, that's FUNNY!!!

Wow all things considered, and reading about the "penis on the prairie", I don't think Sacramento is so bad anymore.

And no, I'm not hating on my Sacramento GCers, I just think it's a boring place.

ETA: I'm surprised that the ACLU hasn't made the state change its capital name yet since they told L.A. that they would take them to court if they didn't remove a miniscule cross from the seal. I mean look at our state capital's name Sacrament-o, religious? Yeah! Next we will have to go changing all of the San/Santa cities because they are saints names.

Cluey 06-23-2004 12:50 PM

Come now, people, Tallahassee isn't that bad. Yes, there are a bunch of annoying college students there and more strip clubs than you can shake a stick at, but it's not a horrible place :)

I think I have to agree with tsuadpi859 and say Montgomery, Alabama.

haha...there actually has been some real progress in Hartford lately (much of it under since deposed Gov. John Rowland), and some sections aren't that bad.

hopefully the projects/renovations going on will improve the area even more. at least the suburbs (Farmington, West Hartford, Bristol (my home town)) are nice.

MattUMASSD 06-23-2004 01:58 PM

Richmond disappoints me.

ADPiShannan 06-23-2004 02:55 PM

Only reason I say Columbus, OH is because of all of those Highway shootings, Im from OH and I think those people are crazy there lol...

I second that. Granted, I haven't been to many state capitals, but Richmond is NASTY.

aphibeach 06-23-2004 03:34 PM

Raleigh is subpar compared to other capitals

we dont even have skyscrapers! (law states that buildings cannot exceed 5 or 6 stories)

GeekyPenguin 06-23-2004 03:41 PM

Our capital kicks your capitals ass.

:)

EagleChick19 06-23-2004 03:52 PM

I'm thinking Harrisburg is the nastiest state capitol!!! Anyone agree with me?

Harrisburg isn't bad, but have you ever noticed that most people who aren't native Pennsylvanians have never heard of it??? Folks tend to think Philadelphia is the capitol.

UKDaisy 06-23-2004 04:09 PM

I never thought Frankfort should have been the capitol. I always thought Louisville should have been, just b/c its bigger. And Lexington, just b/c its the better than Louisville. :p

I have to throw in Little Rock, Arkansas. The pep band went there for NCAA SEC Women's Tourny last year. Granted, and this is a huge granted, we were mainly stuck right downtown - but there was nothing. Lots of bar-bee-que restaurants!!! And an Army/Navy Store. But that was it.

Although, it did have the Peabody hotel - and those are awesome!!!!

They have better places to put a capitol.

LOL....you're right. Yes, I have noticed that all the people who don't live in PA think that Philadelphia is the capitol.

Hey now! Cheyenne isn't that bad and it's nice not to have SOOOOO many people in the state. We're selective! But, I do have to agree that Tallahassee is WRONG in so many ways!

Tom Earp 06-23-2004 04:39 PM

Sorry BetaRulz, Topuka Sucks, live there one year for a life time!:(

Jefferson City, Mo. The Max State Pen is just down the street from the Capitol, hard to make sure which are the real Bad Guys!:

Like Mongomery for the History, rest no comment.

Nebraska, Lincoln,uh OK, thank god UN is there. Amazing how small the campus is!

Colorado, Denver= no other City big enuff, has to be.

Ill. Springfield= well Linclone Museum is there but was falling down!

Sacramento, Cal. In no where land.

Baton Rouge, La. easy to miss to get to New Orleans, Home Of the King Fischer.

New Mexico, Santa Fe, not in the real world at all.

Utah, Salt Lake, said it all!

Oaklahoma, where is the capitol? LOL! Oh, wow, the City of Oaklahoma. Sooners DA, Crooks and Blackards.

Where else have I not been, Tenn.(oops), ahve been there which city is it?, Ky. Fl. Wy. Penn. N J, N Y, Virgina, W. Virgina, Ohio, S Dakota, and not been to their Capitols.

World Capitols that are Nice, London, Viennia, Budapest, Munich should be one.

queequek 06-23-2004 06:19 PM

As much as I love homey Iowa, I have to vote for Des Moines. Even Iowa City or Ames is much better than DSM.

How dare you speak of God's Country in such a manner. It's blasphemous at best.

But really, I'm sorry you were stuck downtown most of the time. That is truly the worst part of Little Rock and North Little Rock(site of the SEC women's tourney in Alltel Arena).
The River Market is the best part of downtown and that's if you're of drinking age. Next time go west a few miles or north a few where the good people are.

Anyway, my vote on this would have to be Montgomery. AL. That's a dirty ass town.

DeltaSigStan 06-23-2004 07:16 PM

The NBA team that plays in my state's capital is called the QUEENS........

I have heard of Harrisburg, through their indoor soccer team....

PlymouthDZ 06-23-2004 07:56 PM

My vote is for Concord, New Hampshire (even though I'd be willing to bet no one else reading this has been there and is able to back me up :p) There is NOTHING to Concord.. and its sad that it is NH's capital when Manchester (in Southern NH) is so much bigger (and better)

Oh fellow Iowan you are so wrong. Des Moines is a great capital city. Having visited the capital city in about 35 states over my life, Des Moines isn't even in the top 25 of bad capital cities!!!!

I would put Denver, CO toward the top. Columbus, OH is my choice for capital city needing a lot of improvement!

LOL you have a point. I also had the chance of visiting many capital cities in my life, and I particularly like Providence, Boston, Madison, and St. Paul. I should say that Des Moines is not the best, but definetely not the worst. So count my vote off, since I changed my mind.
I had the chance of knowing Des Moines so much, and compared it with some other capital cities. I wish there are more things to do in downtown Des Moines, and more tall buildings.
As right now, Des Moines is preparing to be a big city, and definately I agree with you: in several years, it will be one of the best capital cities in the nation. But not quite yet for now, so please be kind of reminding me of this thread in several years.
(btw, are they still working on the I-235? Last time I was in DSM, they were working on the curved bridge)

In fact, I live in Atlanta. Gosh, talking about a state capital. So much to be improved in the city, and they didn't have a great start to begin with. The only thing I like about Atlanta is there are many things to do here. :D

Well, I was born in and lived in Columbus until college, and have lived in Denver for the past 24 years. I think they're both pretty neat places -- each in its own way.

The problem with trying to "rate" capital cities is that they are hugely different. It's hard to compare a city like Denver with Lincoln. Or Columbus with Lansing. Even Cheyenne with Salt Lake City. Some are cities, some are towns. Some states are heavily populated, some are sparse.

In fact, after visiting quite a number of capitals, I would say that the capital city with some of the biggest problems is Washington, D.C.

That bridge is done and a couple more have been dropped and are being worked on. I figure by the time the I235 project is completed, it will be time to repave the original road again :)! The southern bypass is complete and is WONDERFUL for getting around quickly!

I went to HS and college in Springfield and Dayton. Sister lives outside of Columbus. While it has a great college town, the rest of the city seems to be stuck on hold. Although it has been a while since I was last there. Traveling through Columbus on my way to DC in about 2 weeks (Phi Mu convention! yipee). I guess I will report back. We are driving through Des Moines, Indianopolis (GREAT capital city :) and Columbus for sure :).

Seriously

I'm an Aggie, and i hate all things UT,

but Austin is the absolute best capitol city in the country.

Not only is it one of the best cities in the country for parks and recreation-type activities, it is a beautiful setting. 6th street is paralleled by none.

Kitso
KS 361 times i'd rather live in Austin than in any fuckin city WI has to offer

Does it have two beautiful lakes? Does it have State Street? Does it have one fo the most beautiful Greek rows ever on one of the aforementioned lakes?

I like it when people from Texas make fun of Wisconsin. My parents lived in Texas once. It made them leave the country. :p

don't you have some other GCer to intimidate and run off?

Or some other retarded harem thread to post in?

Or maybe to go and embarass yourself in some signature related thread?

As soon as there's a Madison City Limits show, highlighting Madison as one of the best live music scenes in the country, let me know.

As soon as one of the best college sports programs in football, basketball, women's basketball, baseball, etc is in Madison, let me know.

As sooon as Madison is 30 minutes from the #1 rated waterpark in the nation, let me know.

As soon as Madison sits on the Colorado river and one of the best park systems in the country, let me know.

As soon as Madison hosts a Presidential library(this i don't know, it could, but i'm not gonna waste my time researching fucking Wisconsin, ya know?) let me know.

As soon as Madison is close to hosting any river like the Guadalupe, Gruene, or Frio let me know.

This is all assuming that the capital of Wisconsin is Madison. Once again, i don't really care enough about wisconsin to waste my time researching it.

Until then, keep up your good work of trying to run people off of GC and then posting about them in you LJ. I can't believe i actualy agree with Starang for once.
