What band's fanbase has the highest nerd population?
Got this from another board, what do you think?
My answer, They Might Be Giant. |
I would agree with that just because I think their fanbase is pretty big. No matter what kind of music you like, it's sort of hard not to find their songs silly and catchy.
I will say Creed. Even though they're not a band anymore, I'm sure many a nerd lost sleep over their breakup. |
Well that depends on what definition of "nerd" you're using.
If a nerd is someone who is highly intelligent and hard to understand but discriminating about certain things and occasionally amusing, TMBG. But if a nerd is just someone with bad taste, Creed, hands down. |

Anything off of Saddle Creek for the most part
The winner is going to be a band off of the Saddle Creek Label. Bright Eyes, Azure Ray, The Good Life, Cursive...if you don't live in Nebraska, you have to be pretty underground to know and consider yourself a fan of these groups. Hell most people in Omaha don't even know of these groups.
|
If being a TMBG fan means I'm a nerd, then so be it. But Creed? Christain rock and nerd don't go hand in hand. I don't know a single nerd that likes them (and I know a lot of geeks-pretty close to nerds).
The first band I thought of was Weezer, but again, I'm thinking more geek than nerd |
|
Dead Milkmen. Are they even around anymore?

While this isn't specific to a band, I think anyone who listens techno anime music would have to take the cake as the biggest nerd. I don't even know any of the names of the "groups" who "sing" the "songs."
Anyway, I think the anime crowd wins -- HANDS DOWN! :) |
The Bloodhound Gang
-- although They Might be Giants probably runs a close second. And there's Weird Al. |

Unless that's more "geek" than nerd, and unless you want a full band instead of a singer, I'd say Weird Al hands down. |

And yes, loser applies. |
Not a band, but a singer... I think Elvis Costello would be up there.

And also the soundtracks to video games... |
You people obviously never roomed with a total nerd in college.
Nerds like Rush. The worst band ever! |

Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd has a rather large nerd base. I attended a concert in Tampa, about 15 years ago, where everyone remained seated.

Pink Floyd's shows are more theatrical. I couldn't imagine standing and doing whatever at a concert like that.
|
Rush is geek, not nerd. And yes, I agree that they are awful. I was dragged to a concert once, it was traumatic.
|
Barry Manilow probably has a big nerd fanbase. I think that nerds are more attracted to solo artists than bands.

I love threads dedicated to dissecting the nerd psyche.

Any other suggestion?
|
Not Rush. They're the best band to ever come out of Canada!

Hmmm... Weezer always had a high nerd fan-base up here... what with the songs that reference Dungeons & Dragons and all. |

Sum 41 better than Rush? That's blasphemy!
|
Yeah I was going to say Weezer as well
|
up for your consideration.

LOL Bloodhound Gang. The guy I dated last winter was nuts about them. And as for Rush, all I can say is I went to see them with ex-Mr 33 and his best friend, and there were like 4 guys for every girl there. Then again, this may be another case of "the odds are good, but the goods are odd." |
I'd have to say Frank Zappa.
Along with TMBG and Weird Al, he's the only other music that is universally accepted by my (very nerdy) group of friends. |
