Awww this is so sad to hear. He was a cute little old man. And I can't think of the Cosby Show without his song on their first anniversary show for the grandparents.

I bet that Jamie Foxx's movie is going to make beaucoup cheese now. Aw. :(

This is very sad. This just reminds me of my grandfather. He LOVED Ray Charles. Hopefully they are jamming together right now in Heaven....

I heard that he wasn't born blind, that he went blind at the age of seven from glacoma. I never knew that children could develop glacoma.

The music of this country just won't sound as sweet without Ray Charles - he was a National Treasure.

:( :( :(

There was talk at my office at making tomorrow an official day of mourning for Ray.

Kids can develop glaucoma if they get too much oxygen in a preemie tank--which is what happened to Ray.

OMG, that is sooooooo funny!! Maybe they will fly flags at half staff too!

Sistermadly 06-10-2004 08:40 PM

I'm so sad about this! This man was a national treasure, and his contributions to music have been pretty much underrepresented.

RIP Ray.

Now that's a musician!

RIP Ray Charles.
Distinctive voice, and actually a terrific jazz musician, in addition to being a R&B pioneer. Simply put, genius + soul = jazz. I will have to go home and see what RC I have in my collection.

Too many of today's alleged "artists" (yeah, I'm talking about you, Fiddy and Lil' STD and the Diseased Twins  ) couldn't hold a candle to Mr. Charles' artistry.

Thank you, even though it's totally sad to know.

I love his version of "America, The Beautiful". I'm sure it will be on rotation for 4th of July festivities.

OGM, his version of America The Beautiful is my all time favorite. Whenever I hear that song I always sing his version.

I too saw him in the Jet mag with Clint Eastwood and some awards show, and I thought he looked thin and sick. I thought it was due to him having the hip replacement surgery. I didn't know that he had liver disease. He is an ICON that will be truly missed.

The NY Times has a really nice article on Ray Charles that I have tried to post the link to, but it won't work, so if anyone subscribes to the times on line like I do, please read the article....very good.

I was shocked and sadden to hear he had passed away. A few weeks ago, he had canceled a few shows.

I really wasn't a "fan", but I do realize he was an icon in the music industry.

I didn't know he was a former heroin addict. My mother says she remembers that, but I was like . Not to be funny, but how does a blind man "shoot up"? My mother said, "when you have money, you can do anything". :o

The Lord works mysteriously. His movie will be released later this year. I'm glad he was able to take part in its creation and to give Jamie Foxx direction needed for the role.

He also had 11 children. My husband had some funny things to say about that last night, but I don't think it is GC appropriate :D

I can't wait to see the movie. I think Jamie will do a good job based on the clip I saw

Look, I'm still trippin' off the fact that Stevie Wonder had a gaggle of kids. I don't need that image, too.

Speaking of Stevie, I saw an interview w/ him that one of the NYC stations had. He was the first person they asked about Ray's death...and I was like, why? Is he the "blind black musician" representative?
