There's a live squirrel in the bathroom at work
 

One of my resident's left her bathroom window open last night and a squirrel came in through the window. Okay maybe because we are all girls, but none of us staff that are here right now want to touch it. It looks all scared too!!!!! Okay GC'ers, this is your chance, what would you do to save the squirrel LOL?!

Leave the window open & hope it leaves? Throw a nut (or something) out the window & hope it runs to catch it? Call animal control?

It's funny I called my supervisor about it since I talk to him every morning. He said to leave the window open and maybe it will find it's way back outside. I doubt it cause it looks all scared and is hiding behind the toilet. The cool thing is our maintenance crew comes on Thursdays so I am going to turn on my charm and hopefully they will find a way to remove it. I just don't want anyone to get bit trying to get this thing out of the building. If we catch it I'll save it for Russ's pot pie.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I wouldn't know. We don't have any squirrels here in Hawai`i. Non-AGD squirrels, anyway.

Oh man, this is a dream come true for me. I've always wanted a pet squirrel. My friend and I used to walk home from class and devise ways to catch one and make it ours.

Anyway, can you put shoe box over it or something and then slide the lid underneath and carry it outside?

you might also consider animal rescue mission or humane society or your local zoo.

:) I never saw friendly squirrels until I stepped on my campus. You could make noises and they would follow you around. If you want a pet squirrel, I recommend grabbing one off my campus.

squirrel update:

my director just came in and is really upset about this. apparently he has been requesting maintenance put screens on our windows for the longest because we could get cited by our funding source because of this. also he is thinking worse case scenario what would happen if someone gets bit? they would undoubtedly have to go thru the process of getting rabies shots. ugh:mad: the fun life of a social worker.

A pet squirrel would be nice but they carry rabies. We once rescued a squirrel that had been clipped by a car. He lived a few days but then started to really suffer, so we euthanized him. :(

Euthanized a squirrel? That's almost as bad as the time I took my girlfriend to the vet to have her hamster "put to sleep". That little fella wouldn't have lasted another 15 minutes anyhow, but we just had to spend the $70.00 to do it.

As sad as it made her, I keep remembering having this hamster sitting on the vet's table with an oxygen mask on its face (it had a severe respiratory infection).

Reminds me of that Seinfeld where George hits the squirrel and to appease his girlfriend he has to have expensive, tiny surgical instruments ordered so the vet can operate on the squirrel.

Hey Ktsnake, I understand what you are saying. I know it's bad but my dad is extremely attached to a guinea pig. They've had them for years and they've died off and then they get a new one. I remember one time they paid lots of money to have cancerous tumors removed from the guinea pig. To me they just look like rats.

Some people get very attached to their pets no matter what animal it is.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

If there's a humane society or wildlife rescue place nearby, you could probably get a humane trap from them to catch the squirrel and set him free outside.

Actually in my courses we have discussed different forms of loss and grieving and in our society one of the main losses that is not acknowledged and validated is loss of a pet. This loss is often treated as "less significant" in our society. Other types of losses that are considered "less significant" are loss (death OR break-up) of a boyfriend/girlfriend (because you aren't "married" people think it should be less painful), co-workers, friends, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc. Studies have also been done where people think that after a certain amount of time after the death of a loved one, "you should snap out of it and get over it". Some people NEVER get over a breakup and especially not a death of someone close to them. This kind of goes along with the discussion on depression in one of our recent threads. Many people in our society for whatever reason place blame on the person that is depressed.

Does anyone know what squirel tastes like? Just curious.

We had a squirrel in our house about 6-8 months ago. We borrowed a humane trap, the little guy walked right in, and I let him out across the street.

Mr. Squirell has be rescued! The exterminator came. He was in the room for awhile and there was lots of banging around going on in there but he got him successfully into a release cage. He is about 3 months old according to the exterminator. Same age as my puppy. Go figure.

Awww...no wonder he was so scared. He was a baby.

I have squirrels in the attic and they make so much noise, it's unbelievable. It sounds like they are playing basketball up there. It confuses the cats when the squirrels start fussing with each other chatter chatter chatter.

Actually, I do. When I was little I used to love to eat squirrel. My daddy would go squirrel hunting and my grandma would use it to make biscuits & squirrel meat gravy. Mmmm it was my favorite meal!

Although, somewhere along the lines I figured out what I was eating and I haven't had it in about 20 years.

It tastes very....gamey. That's the only thing I've eaten other than chicken, turkey, or beef (never had deer or lamb) so I can't really describe it to you I guess. But it's kinda' slimy too...depending on how you cook it.

ETA: Actually, Russ, that story made me very sad. It made me think of my grandma. She's not doing too well right now - they don't think she's going to live through the summer. :( She's 91.

I had a squirrel in my apartment this past fall.. We got a brand of traps called "Have a Heart." These traps don't hurt the animal. ALl we did was put a saltine with peanutbutter in the trap and the squirrel fell for it!

But co-sign with the above about the humane traps and calling animal control. Those are the safest bets. :)

Will there be justice for all the hazing those little guys do? :( :confused:
