OK we know what we HATE about NYC but what do we LOVE about NYC

I'll start:

Metro D*Phi*E AA, the shopping, easy to get around (well for the most part), ALWAYS something to do, lots related to my career, good friends, good food, good places to go out, ALWAYS new stories and drama being created LOL, near everything that I love (family, friends), close to the beach, close to the country, and everywhere else is a plane ride away. Lots of NYC Greeks/Greek Alums:) Such a wonderful adult playground, and I love to be able to say "I am from NYC".

ALSO:::: RUSS AND RUDEY live here:D :D :D What's better then having these two sexy guys in my backyard?!!!!!:D:

Sister Havana 06-08-2004 12:07 PM

Let's see...

The Strand!
Confetti Pasta
The subway system...I know this sounds weird but I love how I can get anywhere I need to go on it. I've never even taken a bus there.
Coney Island
St. Mark's Place
The rest of the East Village
The Village Voice is free!
There's always something to do no matter what time you want to do it.
You can get anywhere from there!
The feeling I get when I am there.

Taualumna 06-08-2004 12:13 PM

1.) The wonderful shops in Midtown and in Soho
2.) Broadway plays
3.) Museums
4.) Great restaurants
5.) Central Park

Please don't insult NYC.

Anyway, I love NYC because almost everything here is the best, and we have more of everything.

Lets start with the water. Its flat out better. Our tap water is spring water from the Catskills Mountains. That means that even if the recipes are the same, the water isn't. Our water makes our food better.

Even if the water wasn't better, our food would still probably be. We have more cultural diversity, and fierce competition for all types of cuisines. For example, almost every state is without even one good Chinese restaurant. We have three districts for Chinese food, and some of these restaurants are amazing. Most people have never had good pizza, and never will. Some of the best pizza (if you know where to find it) is here.

The museums. We have hundreds of museums, and most are not worth mentioning, just like most museums nationwide are not worth mentioning. But our best are world class. There is a difference between sitting down and looking at 4 gargantuan Monet water lilly panels, and looking at a diminutive poster.

Broadway show. I'm not really into this, but lets face it. New Yorkers don't take vacations to other parts of America to see theater.

Newspapers. There was a time when most cities had newspapers. Now they have just one. We have five dailies, not counting the Wall Street Journal and foreign language newspapers. Competition breeds quality, and there is just something special about the New York Post sports section.

Sports. We have more of everything, and it tends to be better. Why do you think so many people hate the Yankees? Pure jealousy.

Yes, the jealousy. I love hearing about how other people hate New York. They live lives devoid of anything meaningful, so they try and compensate by bashing a place that has it all. Everytime someone expresses jealousy of New York, I smile.

The subway system. Life long fan. I love it, and I love the Transit Museum.

The people. We get the best and brightest of everyone, because this is where the action is. We get them from all over the world. We get them from all over America. Its great, and they keep making this city better.

Oh, there's more. I'll just have to think of it.

I've never gotten the feeling I feel anywhere else as when I see the NYC skyline.

PhiPsiRuss 06-08-2004 05:56 PM

Another thing that I love about New York is that we are so much more civil to each other than other big cities. I believe that it has to do with not being in cars all the time. We deal with each other face to face.

Remember the Rodney King verdict? There was rioting in LA, and many other cities. Not in NYC.

Remember last year's black out? Only four reported crimes in the entire city. New Yorkers went to traffic intersections, and directed the traffic so that everyone could get home safely. We checked up on our elderly and disabled neighbors. Then blackout turned into the Great Cocktail Party of 2003, and I hope that we have another one this year.

ZTAMich 06-08-2004 08:36 PM

What is there not to love?

My most favorite thing is the smiles from cute strangers on the commute home. And the way you try to get on the same subway car tomorrow so you can smile at eachother again!

I love the shopping. the bar hopping. the great mass transportation (most of the time). the saladbowl/melting pot of different cultures. street fairs. little italy closed off to non-local traffic on weekends. our great local sports teams. celebrities. the skyline. the skyline at night from a cab sitting next to your new special someone. our resiliancy. the big apple red tour bus. the rebuilding of downtown. mom&pop owned stores. food vendors. the outter boroughs. the feeling of being home when you hear "Welcome to NY's LaGuardia/JFK/Penn Station". the dogwalkers. the park. the music/museums/shows. the way the kids of this city deal with some terrible stuff at a young age and have great opportunities for success nonetheless. and i love knowing I've made it here for a year already!

and today....i loved my free iced coffee from D&D just because it's NYC. :)

You stole my answer!

I love New Yorkers. Some of the smartest and best people live in this city.

ZTAMich 06-20-2004 03:54 PM

I love the way the teachers, firefighters & police officers supported eachother this month at the rally for higher pay.

I love that high possiblity of meeting someone who went to your HS on Long Island or knows someone who did.

I love that I live here. I love that my Jersey friends introudce me as "This is Michelle, my friend who lives in the city" it just makes me glow!!

I remember the blackout all too well. I was pleasantly surprised to find that most New Yorkers were very nice and helpful toward one another. I still remember riding the bus in Brooklyn and passing by bars where folks were just sitting and relaxing as if nothing was wrong, just taking everything in stride.

We are survivors!!!! :D :D

Oh yeah - GO BROOKLYN!!!!!

I thought that was the sweetest thing.

Steel Drums

This morning, a guy was playing steel drums on the platform at the Broadway-Nassau station. I could have sworn that I saw palm trees waving in the tunnel wind behind the A train.

winneythepooh7 06-26-2004 01:05 PM

That even though it is such a large city it really is a small world. I swear, wherever I go it seems there are "circles" of people who know someone I know here in NY! You can never get away from anyone LOL.

I love the fact that I got to have dinner with lots of my sisters tonight in Little Italy and that MetroDPhiE is now an offical chartered alumnae association.

I also love the fact that all my neighbors are so friendly when they see me walking my puppy down the block. I love that there are blocks to walk down.

I love the fact that my neighborhood is so extremely diverse~~much much different from the area I grew up in.

I love my new job in Queens. I love that I get to spend a lot of time in Far Rockaway near the beach. You forget you are in the city.

ZTAMich 07-01-2004 05:02 PM

I love that everything we could possibly need is here in the city. But it's great that we can get away from it all, if only for a few hours, thanks to NJTransit and the LIRR. Like my trip out to Long Beach, Long Island today  :D

ztawinthropgirl 07-01-2004 11:44 PM

Even though I have never been to NYC, the one thing I absolutely love about NYC is the male Brooklyn accent on an NYC Italian-American. Love the dark features and accent! That's the sexiest thing alive . . . an Italian-American with a Brooklyn accent!

I know! I am so silly!

mmcat 07-02-2004 12:34 AM

the theater....i love musicals

and to ditto others, the attitude. new yorkers are survivors -- often with penache the rest of us can only dream of.

Oh god yeah! I went to California and was dying with those hockey pucks they "call" bagels. Even Dunkin Donuts bagels are slammin compared to those awful pieces of bread-like stuff. It's the NY water though that does this. That is why our pizza is the best too!

Sister Havana 07-02-2004 12:16 PM

Oh yeah, the New York tabloids! I love reading the Post and the Daily News...that's what I pick up when I am there, not the Times. :)

I can't believe I forgot this but Tasti-D-Lite! What's your favorite flava?

My bf just surprised some chocolate mint tasti-d-lite. They just opened one directly downstairs. We don't even have to cross a street. :)

You're so lucky! I wish they'd open one in my neighborhood! That's what I would eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner!!!!!

Oh and we can't forget The Magnolia Bakery. YUMMMMMMMMMMM! I think I am gonna go there tonight for a cupcake. I also want to go to the Village Restaurant and get Steak Au Poivre (did I spell that right?!) and Wasabi Mashed Potatoes. (I've been at work all day on my day off and am dreaming about dinner.........).

Start spreading the news
I'm leaving today
I want to be a part of it, New York, New York!
These vagabond shoes
Are longing to stray
And make a brand new start of it
New York, New York!
I want to wake up in the city that never sleeps
To find I'm king of the hill, top of the heap
These little town blues
Are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it
In old New York
If I can make it there
I'll make it anywhere
It's up to you, New York, New York!

Often imitated, NEVER duplicated! There's nothing like New York!
