Reason for joining/Favorite Sister/Brother
Hello everyone! I'm new to the board!
I am going to be attending school in the fall and I am looking forward to recruitment! My three older sisters are in sororities (all different ones) and I have grown up with the absolute desire to join! I have been reading the boards for months and I can not wait until fall!! I have a question for everyone: Was there a specific person in your chapter who was the main influence for you to join? Who was he/she and why? |
I didn't know a single person in my chapter when I joined. I joined based on what the sorority stood for and their beliefs.
My sister ended up joining my sorority the year after I rushed. Turns out, she liked the same stuff that I did about the sorority. |
My big, Jon was the reason I joined. He was a good guy, the ladies loved him, and the real life big brother I never had. He rushed me. I knew little about the organization or its ideals. I lucked out and hit the Jackpot with Lambda Chi. Greek life is amazing. Its changed my life so for the better. Made me be a part of something much larger than myself. Introduced me to hundreds, if not thousands of people I might never had met. Forced me to look deep inside to see what my ideals were. Challenged me to greater things. Allowed me to be a role model. Destroy stereotypes. Embrace diversity. It allowed me to make a difference... in the lives of people I knew and loved and through our philanthropies, in the lives of people I never met.

I am a charter member of my chapter, so my story is a little different. Our chapter consultant is really the reason why I am a Kappa. She spent months sitting out in front of our student union talking to women about Kappa and urging them to come to the interest group events. Kylie's friendliness got meinterested, and her honestly and sincerity got me hooked. :) She spent hours talking to me about Kappa and her personal experiences. I late found out that she took the time to do this with almost every single potential new member! Talk about dedication! I have never met anyone so dedicated and sincerely interested in others. When you ask our charter class why they chose to be Kappas, the almost unanimous response is, "Kylie!"

Honestly, I wanted something that would look good in my resumé. That was my main reason. I also found the promise of no hazing and being able to build something from the ground-up to be appealing. I was a founding member of my chapter. I was chosen (mostly by default) to be the new member educator after my first semester in the colony. It all went downhill (or uphill depending on the way you look at it) from there. I held exec positions from there on out until my senior year when I settled for alum relations.
Now I'm an active alumnus -- recorder for our alumni chapter. I edit the newsletter, publish and mail it. I also maintain the all-powerful alum directory as well as other miscellaneous stuff. I'll be attending my first national convention (as an alum) in July. My expectations going into it were pretty low. But once I was in, I realized what a great thing it was. Probably the most important aspect of being Greek is being able to tolerate and work with others. If you have it, you'll do fine. If not, be prepared to be at the center of drama. |
My sorority big sister influenced me to join. I met her the summer before I went to college through my then boyfriend's older brother (he was dating her). We all went to dinner one night and she talked about why I should rush and why I should really consider her sorority. During recruitment, everytime I was in the ZTA house, she made sure to come over to me and say hello or ask how my day was going. She was friendly and made me feel welcome. When it came time to choose our bigs, she was #1 on my list.

My boyfriend at the time had just signed with his SigEp chapter (at the end of his fourth year of school!) and after going to a few of their events, I started thinking about it. I also really wanted some female friends because at the time all my friends were male and were also CS majors, as was my boyfriend - I wanted to hang out with girls and talk about something besides computers! :p My neighbor in the dorms was pledging Gamma Phi that semester, and two other girls on our wing were pledging two different locals. I watched the way the girls were treated - Cassie came home with presents and was always excited about stuff to go to, and the other girls came home, in, shall we say, a less than ladylike condition, and were woken up randomly to go to pledging activities. I was still thinking about pledging one of the locals because at the time they all seemed to be dating SigEps so I thought it'd be easier to get a bid (yeah I don't know ;)), but then when I was back at school Cassie was one of the first to move into the dorms after me, with her big ol' Gamma Phi sticker on her truck. After she pretty much tackled me, I decided I would rather join a house with somebody I already knew who seemed to enjoy their new member period. I've never regretted my decision, Gamma Phi really was the only house for me on that campus. :)

The reason I first became interested in joining was to meet people. I had transferred to my campus spring of my freshman year so I knew hardly anyone because I missed all of the orientation stuff. I knew a handful of girls on my floor and had a long-distance boyfriend and I was sick of sitting in my room.
There was a girl on my floor that was an ASA. So before I called the house about the interest party I went and talked to her. She was so enthusiastic about it that I knew I just had to check it out. She ended up being my god-mom. Another girl came to pick me up and take me to the house. I got in the car and she and I just instantly clicked. She ended up being my big sis and told me one time that the minute I started talking to her she knew I was meant to be an ASA. |
Hi cassie612! I'm so excited to hear your enthusiasm about joining a GLO.
I went through rush my freshman year but dropped out because I didn't feel like I fit into one specific chapter and I didn't know if I was ready to make the commitment. I met a girl named Melody through a class and we studied a lot together. I also met another girl, we'll call her Jane, in another class who talked up Chi O a lot to me and she was the reason I decided to go through rush again. Well, I found out about a day before rush started that Jane had dropped Chi O and I was crushed because she was the one who had told me how great it was. On preference night I was still unsure about where I wanted to go, especially since I had gotten that news. Melody and I were talking at pref and I decided to ask her flat out why Jane had dropped. She told me that she didn't really know (I'm sure she did, but that's not something you discuss with a PNM) and then proceeded to tell me how much she wanted me to be a part of her chapter and be one of her sisters. I could tell that she was sincere and I knew right then what my choice would be. |
My freshman year I was playing soccer and the majority of the team were KBG's. It was because of these girls that I even got interested in joining. I was the shy homesick freshman and they all made me feel welcome and gave me pointers on the school and all of that. These people became some of my closest sisters and I think it because I knew them outside of the sorority before I knew them inside it.

There wasn't really a specific person. I've always thought that the Tri- Sigma's were the friendliest girls on campus, so I decided to check them out. The first COB I went to, almost the entire chapter was there. I found out that there wasn't ONE girl that I didn't click with. It just felt right. I guess you could say I was influenced by the whole chapter.

Yay!! Kylee is one of my pledge sisters and an absolute asset to Kappa. I'm so happy to hear she had such a great influence on you all. :) [/sidebar] My older sister was a Kappa and I had always looked up to her. I knew she wouldn't be a part of something if she didn't really believe in what it stood for. I went through recruitment with an open mind but I always felt most at home with the Kappas. |
I actually went into recruitment hoping I'd be a member of a different organization....while I got along great with everyone pretty well in that GLO, I really hit it off with the woman who first greeted me the first day of recruitment in ADPi (her name was Jamie). Once we started talking, we never ran out of things to say....and the great thing was she was also from California, which was great to talk about being so far from home. Throughout the week, I talk to Jamie a couple of other times, and then she wound up preffing me on the last night. When talking with her, I started crying, and knew that I had found the connection I was looking for in a sorority. Jamie didn't wind up as my diamond sister, but she was the first sister that I really bonded with and the one who got me to consider ADPi very seriously as the sisterhood for me!

I joined the second semester of my freshman year. My friend Cheryl, went through Formal Recruitment in the fall and told me about it and the two sororities. She told me what a sorority was really like and what Alpha Phi stood for. She invited me to events and introduced me to a lot of the sisters. Without her, I probably would not be where I am today. I love Alpha Phi so much and don't know where I would be without it. Good luck with recruitment this fall!!!!

I had always been interested in joining a fraternity because I was born here and had always been around greek life...
The person who really influenced me to sign AKL was my friend Ryan... He is a year older than me and went to high school with me... Delta Gamma had their anchor splash at the pool I worked at, and I ran into Ryan there... He invited me to lots of rush events and truly showed me a good time... I also checked out a lot of other fraternities on campus, but this one seemed to be a great match... Awesome guys, Ryan, great reputation, awesome at sports, great house and location... Plus it was fairly new on campus (1992) so that meant there was room for even more improvement... So yup, thats why I decided to sign. I'll also be starting school in the fall like you. -Matt |
good luck with recruitment
i had a pledge sister in your exact situation. she had three older sisters, each in a different sorority, all at the same school. marsha was her own person, and although she was especially close to one of her sisters, she was determined to make her own decision. she ended up choosing a sorority different from her sisters, i think partly to save their feelings, but also because as she said,"i like zeta best!" i can't imagine having 4 daughters in sororities in school at the same time. that family should have a plaque put up in their honor somewhere at fsu!
i joined zta because i had a great experience every time i attended parties there during formal recruitment. one girl in particular seemed to take an interest in me, and if she was not my hostess for that event, made a point of coming over to say hello and ask how my day was going. |

We are getting a new CC this fall, and we are all excited about that, though. :) |

I am really excited about school in the fall. I can not wait to experience recruitment for myself. (My sisters have trained me not to call it Rush!) :) |
Cassie and Matt, Great for both of you!
Again, mine is a little different. I founded the local at PSU, Ks. I was turned down by many of the OLD LINE Fraternitys. One Erik Conard who you have seen on site was the TKE Advisor. Knowing that I wanted to do something different Very Strongly suggest LXA. "No I said, they are to new, only 1909"! I heeded his advice and have never looked back for the simple reason of The Great Fraternity and The Many Brothers that have come after me at My Chapter and the many Brothers that I have ment All over the Country! What you as new aspirants must look for is who are the people that you will be joing for life, is the Organization someone that you feel comfortable with, do you aspire to the same ideals. There is a lot more than knowing someone in a certain Orgaization, as down the road, actually is what really counts. While it does help knowing someone, it does not hurt to look around. Never know what may turn up!:) The very best of luck to both of you! We have a saying as I am sure all of us do, "Seek And Ye Will Find". |
Two people influenced me, actually...and one wasn't even an ASA (yet), she was a chapter advisor. And the other was a certain "Sunny" person I know.....if she happens to read this she'll know who she is...
|
I was influenced by two people when I decided to join Theta. One of them made me feel at home the first day that I walked in the door and we just seemed to have a great connection. She became my twinstar and kept me involved in Theta the entire time that I lived out of house - calling me, picking me up, etc.
The other person just seemed so down to earth and fun when I talked to her, that meeting her helped me picture myself as a member of the chapter. Oddly enough, she also played a huge role in my Theta life - she became my pledge mom. I still keep in regular contact with both of them. |
I was really influenced by a certain woman in the chapter who reminded me of myself. She was outgoing, crazy, and fabulous!
She made me feel at home (as did the other girls) and her involvement really got me interested in joining. Jess (Starfrog)- I am so thrilled that I was one of the people who helped influence you to join ASA. That's so fabulous! Its a wonderful compliment and one of the nicest things I have ever been told. Thank you!! |
I really liked a few girls in my chatper... and there was one in particular who I had a class with at the time I rushed who always told me she hoped I was coming out to the event that night, but what made me choose Phi Sig was the general feeling of comfiness with all of them that I had felt all week... I knew I could be myself... I tend to be a bit high maintance... which is my decision... but I also don't want to have to be that way all the time, and I felt that I could feel comfortable/accepted whether I was the "cute put together me" or the wearing sweats and my glasses been studying/sick/lazy/bum for the day me.

I actually joined Theta Nu Xi because of someone I met here from GC. At the time we met, neither one of us was Greek, but we struck up a friendship. So when I saw that she had crossed on our website, I was happy for her. I still wasn't Greek. I was still researching different organizations. So one day, I really decided to check out the website and I fell in love. It's been a ONEderful ride ever since.
What really won me over is that this girl. She is one of the nice people I know. I was going thur a bad patch and she lent me her shoulder to cry one. She didn't even know me and she was just there for me. That impressed me so much. I'm proud to call her my soror, but I'm even prouder to call her my friend |
Randomly, I was told the summer before I went to college (by an ex that was a TKE at Akron) that I would fit in as an AGD or a DG. Of course I didn't base my choices on that, but it made me interested in both and especially in joining all together. DG was the house that I was the most comfortable and that I felt I could grow more as a person. I loved the women and everything they had to offer. The organization as a whole is strong and I wanted to be apart of that.
My favorite person upon joining I would have to say was a woman named Kristi. She preffed me and is still one of my very good friends. She was always very sweet and was a great support during my new member period and throughout my membership. I will always appreciate her! |

i started pledging a group fall 98 my freshman year, but stopped cause the girls werent what i thought they were. then i wanted to pledge the next quarter but i kept putting it off til spring of my sophmore year, i went with the girls i thought i should have pledged in the first place cause the alumni that came up from georgia convinced me that since i really wanted to do it i should and stop being stubborn and go for it.
|
my sis mom, kelly, was a large part of the reason i joined. she was just super friendly and down to earth. all during preference when everyone's supposed to be quiet and reserved, we're laughing about SNL and silly stuff. when i saw how the sisters reacted to each other during the parties, and how much of a tight-knit group they all were (and how kelly couldn't introduce me to someone else without some kind of story that would make them both cry from laughing so hard), i knew it was the place for me....but kelly was definitely the instigator (sp??) for my profound love for Alpha Gam. :)

The first person I really clicked with at Mercer was my Orientation Assistant Stacy. We had Orientation stuff for like 4 days and we hung out all the time and really got to know each other. She had to disaffiliate until classes started but I did know that she was Greek and was encouraging everyone to sign up for recruitment but then I found out she was a Chi O. I still saw her in my Freshman Seminar class that she precepted and became great friends with her. She was the first person I talked to in the Chi O house during rush and she also preffed me. She sincerely loved Chi O so much and the other girls that I met were just as awesome as she was! I was hooked!

There were so many awesome women in my chapter when I went through Recruitment. I had been hanging around the Greek System for a semester before Recruitment so I already knew that the Panhel President was an AGD. I also knew that one of the women running for Student Government President was an AGD. The woman who rushed me hardest was Sherri and she was fantastic! Very down to earth and friendly. They were very focused on scholarship and there were several women in a contest to knock one of the sisters out of her top GPA spot. Their sisterhood was all so apparent! Sherri though, was the one that I clicked with the most and she ended up being my Sister-Mother, even though she was also the VP Fraternity Education (who taught us our history and worked with us most). I must have been her rush crush too because the VPFE doesn't usually take a Sister-Daughter!

pi phi :)
my reason's for being a Pi Phi were b/c of influence on many aspects. First Semester Fresh yr i was an Athlete (Swimming & diving) and i didnt think i would have time for both, even thou i knew i wanted to be in a sorority since HS. One of my really good friends who was on the Rowing team pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma while she was on the team and assured me that it was doable to pledge and continue with your sport. So i decided then that next semester i would rush. SHe came home and talked about how much fun and aweosme the Kappa girls were, i meet a few of them in class too and decided that i wanted to be in a sorority and kappa was looking good to me. So i went in the SPring to rush COB. i wanted to have a open mind so i attended about 4 rush parties. and then i found Pi beta phi. I instantly clicked with the girls at pi phi and i knew this was where i was soposto be. i knew that this was my home away from home and i had so much in common, while i am soo greatful for my friend christy who exposed me and made me want to be Greek i am also greatful that i found my own house and i found the girls who i am proud to be a part of. I <3 Pi Phi :) my big sis i meet on bid day and we instantly clicked when we started talkin about surfing ...
now i love my big and my lil sis's and i couldnt ever imagine being anything other than a Pi Phi.. my big Bro as well as my Boyfriend are TKE's so i Gotta love the TKE's also :P |
I ran into a friend I hadn't seen in months. I found out she was a DZ. She knew I was interested in joining a sorority and told me to contact her I wanted more info. She is so down to earth and one of the nicest people I know. She totally broke the "snotty Greek" stereotype that I saw from some other people. Semesters later I went through their COB, and they took me in with open arms. :) I met my now big sis on the first day I hung out with these girls. We clicked instantly. She is my favorite person in the world.
