What do you HATE about NYC?
I'll start. People are psycho and rude. I just had an experience that pissed me off. They just re-did the Queens Center Mall and it is really nice for shopping now. Anyways, I came out and was sitting in my car talking to my friend who lives in Chicago. Well apparently the parking garage was full because some LOSER starts blaring his horn, flashing his brights and then has the nerve to come over and start screaming and cursing at me that he can't find a parking spot and "you better F*****G get off your phone and give me your spot", he goes. Look, it's not my problem if they let more people in then there are spots and I am sorry but I am not moving because your rude ass wants my spot. So that's my vent for the day. I took my sweet ass time moving my car though :D
People are like this all the time too, which I absolutely can't stand about my beloved city. A little girl got hit by a car on my block and died a couple weeks ago. When the street got blocked off for EMS people were screaming and cursing because they couldn't park their car for a half hour. NYC drivers definately piss me off!!!! |
You're living in the wrong neighborhood. I would move.
|
Well I really can't move right now and I don't think it's my neighborhood, I think it is NYC in general. Or people in NYC when they drive. Once you are in the drivers seat many people turn into crazy persons.
|
NYC drivers can be very psychotic. I take the subway everywhere. Which leads me to the one thing that I want to see changed about NYC. Fewer cars and trucks, and expanded freight rail and a dramatically expanded subway system.
Also, I would have recorded the drivers license of the man who threatened you, and reported it. |
hey i probably should have but i was mad and not thinking about that at that point. i agree about an expanded subway line. that would be cool. also (and we know this ain't happening) lower cab fares. i live in queens though and cherish having a car because it is more of a hassle dealing with the MTA outside of Manhattan.
|
I hate the fact that everything is so much more expensive in NYC. I know why and all--but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
|
It's dirty. I live and work in relatively nice, clean, neighborhoods...but when I get home, I'm just GRIMY. Ugh.
|
I hear you about things being more expensive, especially food. I had an internship in NYC in 1994. Shortly after I moved into my apartment (in one of the NYU dorms), I went to the deli in my building to pick up some groceries. I left without buying anything and came back upstairs and said "I'm not buying stuff there. It's too expensive!" They laughed and told me that that's what the price of food was going to be anywhere I went. I did find a grocery store nearby where the prices were somewhat normal but still more expensive than out here.
|
I can't stand how everything is so expensive. The homelessness is disheartening.
|
The tourists...
:p JUST KIDDIING!!!! winney - I hate to be a b*itch, but while I would not have gotten out of my car to threaten you, I would have been cursing you out left and right from my car. As a NYer you shoudl know parking is at a premium in this area. Shame, shame (I'm wagging my finger at you as I say this!) :) Seriosuly, I hate how people are so unaware. Three different times today people just stopped dead in front of me, or walked right into me etc. It's so annoying! Pay attention!!! |

Pay attention!!! [/B][/QUOTE] UMMM HELLO?! this is EXACTLY the attitudes I am talking about that piss me off about "New Yorkers". Why is it MY responsibility if the parking garage lets too many people in? And sometimes people aren't moving their car so why should I just because YOU may want parking. I don't like how you foolishy imply that I am "unaware" either. And yes, while you "hate" to be a bitch, you are being one :) But have a good day anyway :D |

Seriously though, if you're visiting New York with a bunch of friends, don't pick a street corner, where a few hundred people a minute walk through, to stop and caucus. Not very considerate. And we New Yorkers are very considerate to tourist pedestrians. Ever notice how we walk around you while you take pictures? All we ask is that you pick a spot that isn't so busy for your meetings. |
Damn Yankees :o :p ;) :D
|
Yes, but I'm in NY - we're alowed to be b*tchy! :)
I actually wasn't referring to you as "unaware", though re-reading my post I see how it could be read that way. I was just saying I would have been mad if someone was talking on their phone in the car if there weren't any spots open. The unaware people I was referring to were the ones who don't move into the subway cars, the people who stand in front of the turnstiles digging for their Metrocard etc etc. You know, those types... |
OH! I know what I HATE about NY'ers! Most people are transplants into NY and "complain" about ""tourists"----LIKE THEY never were NEW to NY before!!!!!
And the majority of these "New Yorkers" are living in Manhattan too under the false impression that they are "a New Yorker" . Very annoying!!!! |

The thing about New York City is that there are far too many people in a very small place. I don't mean just Manhattan. Even Long Island is overcrowded. I think a little consideration goes a long way in this city. Please, thank you, and have a nice day are rarely said and heard, but always appreciated.
As far as public transportation goes, please have your Metrocard out and ready when you get to the turnstile. Don't make people wait for you to go into your bag or wallet. If you are not ready step aside. Also don't stop right in front of me or congregate in the crosswalks and street corners like Russ and Kathy said. WOW! I didn't know so many things bugged me, lol! |

I will stand there, stare 'em in the eye, and say "EXCUSE me!". They still don't get it! |
Four words: The Taxi Cab Drivers!!!!!
Does even ONE of them speak English?!?!?! |

I love Manhattan and if something happens that prevents me from living here (or in a select few outer borough neighborhoods), I'm leaving the city altogether. If that doesn't make me a New Yorker, fine. I'm legally a Floriduh resident anyway. :p |
I call them New Yorkers with a vengeance. It's not that transplants to NY can't or shouldn't complain about tourists or inconsiderate people. Complaining is a hobby here, lol. It's that some of them go over the top trying to prove their credibility. It's kind of funny.
I also can't stand crazy people screaming at me. Someone screamed at me in the street near Macy's at Herald Square, "Get the F*CK out of my way!" I was about 10 feet away from her, and no one was closer than I. It made me want to block that b*tch! Oh yeah this was on my birthday, too. Only in New York. |

I also totally agree about the earlier post about the people trying to get on the subway before you get off. I will purposely stand in the doorway and not move sometimes because of these annoying people. I've also been known to "accidentally" bump these people really hard with my bag (I used to love having my backpack filled with books for this purpose). Some more annoying stuff-when you are about to walk through the turnstile getting off the subway and people push ahead of you. Has happened to me numerous times. Also when people are so up your ass when you are getting off the train/bus. Come on give me some space! Some chick last week was so close to me she stepped on the back of my flip flop and it came flying off. I was like "excuse me would have been nice". She just looked at me and "giggled" to her friend. URRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR:mad: |
Winney, based on all your replies in this thread, I think you should move.

i hate New York because Tupac brainwashed me to.

In regards to the homeless problem, it's nothing. Trust me, it's NOTHING!
Want to see homeless everywhere? In Chicago they're all over and sell their own newspaper. In San Francisco there are more homeless than there are people with homes. Seriously. And Santa Monica evidently is Club Med for the homeless in Cali. What bothers me about NYC is that there are so many ghetto people. But whatever that's part of the culture. I love going to the Bronx for car repairs and having the option to buy a rooster in the same room. I like the piss smell in the subway. I like tripping on a cobblestone that's above the rest. Why? Because it's that stuff that you remember. You live somewhere else and nothing stands out. You can always leave NY for a vacation and it's great. As for over crowding, I don't see that where my parents live in Long Island but then again, you don't find homes for cheap there and the people are snotty. -Rudey --Personally I'm living somewhere tropical when I'm older with many lady servants. |

Are they on the North or South shore? |

"North Shore Steeped in American history, the North Shore of Long Island is also known as the "Heritage Trail," defined by what was formerly known as "Knight's Highway," now Route 25A. This region of the Island retains the character of years gone by, and much has been preserved-parts dating back to colonial times, the Revolutionary War era and the earliest days of the nation, when President George Washington traveled here in 1790. Quaint bays, harbors and villages on Long Island Sound make up the picturesque North Shore, which extends east from Great Neck to Port Jefferson. This is also the fabled Gold Coast, where turn-of-the-century tycoons such as the Vanderbilts, Phipps and Gueggenheims summered in opulent mansions and gardens, many of which are open to the public today. Also on the North Shore: Teddy Roosevelt's stately summer home, Sagamore Hill. " -Rudey |

When I think of "North Shore" I think of certain northern suburbs of Chicago, such as Winnetka, Wilmette, Lake Forest, Highland Park, etc. :D [/hijack] |
What an amusing thread!
I've been in my car, waiting for the "idiot" in the parked car to finish whatever task they started in the time between closing the cardoor and putting the car in reverse. (I especially hate when he/she has the car in reverse for several minute before actually vacating the spot!!) I think that's universal. I think getting out and yelling at the other driver is an anger management issue in any city or state! |
