I'm Freaking Poor! No $$$

Just wanted to complain. Got the wonderful notice today that the Cal State Schools have decided to increase our student fees by another 14%!!! Isn't this exciting? After all, college students are obviously wealthy with unlimited resources to pay for their education.

Seriously, why now? They just upped our tuition last semester & now they're doing it again. This sucks!

Overtime here I come!

mmcat 06-03-2004 10:27 PM

thanks...arnold

James 06-03-2004 10:28 PM

Try stripping, they make great money.

CASIGKAP 06-03-2004 10:29 PM

What a bunch of bull. Not only are book prices out of control, the school also rips you off big time.

I bought all my books last semester & spent over $500 bucks on them. When I went to sell them back, the school offered me only $40 dollars for them! I was supremely pissed & refused to sell them. Hell No!

CASIGKAP 06-03-2004 10:30 PM

I don't want to strip. My pretty perky boobs are for my boyfriends eyes only.

Maybe I can do private parties?

James 06-03-2004 10:32 PM

More money in private parties.

$200 on a slow night, $500 on a good night. If you're really hot, and get into one of the better clubs, you can clear more than a grand a night. Where strippers go wrong is that they spend way too much money on silicone, clothing, and coke. Be disciplined, and after 5 years of stripping, you can retire.

Good luck!

CASIGKAP 06-03-2004 10:34 PM

Hmmm...Retiring before I hit 30 does sound good. Plus, my boobs will still be perky & my ass won't be hitting the ground. I LOATHE gravity.

hoosier 06-03-2004 10:43 PM

Try Hooters

No stripping, just wing it.

CASIGKAP 06-03-2004 10:46 PM

My rack is not Hooters material. Sorry.

not so much anymore... i go to a state funded school, and tuition is costing me literally twice what I used to pay a year or so ago :) i guess it depends on where you are

Still cheaper than most private schools. When I thought I was going to Berkeley, the out-of-state tuition was still one-third of what the private schools were charging.

Peaches-n-Cream 06-04-2004 12:16 AM

You should start a book trading or buying group in your sorority or with the entire campus. Find people who took classes that you want to take and trade or buy your books.

It really sucks when prices go up, but your salary stays the same.

SGill4613 06-04-2004 01:51 AM

Just a thought, but as a fraternity/sorority, if the treasure and academic chair were to work together and say that if each person gave a book to the chapter (holding about 5 for each class) and each person got $10 off of dues for each class, it might help save the other chapter members money on books in the future.

Just a thought.

thermobryan 06-04-2004 01:58 AM

Oh man, what a post....yes, i am POOR! I go to CAL STATE POLY pomona and yeah tuition SUCKS...when i started it was like 400 a quarter, now its like 900....I am so poor I cant afford anything, I had to not eat a week to get my lil bro letters for initiation....Are u a SK from long beach?

AchtungBaby80 06-04-2004 04:32 AM

Tuition is going up here, too...it does that every year, but this year it made a BIG jump! I'm not too happy, but I guess I'll just have to hush up and pay it.

AOII*Azra-elle 06-04-2004 08:37 AM

Tuition has gone up here again for next year. Book prices aren't too bad, Barnes and Noble are usually high so everyone goes to the mom and pop owned book store for books. It's great...plus they offer more back on books at the end of the semester than B&N does. But geez....I'll never get loans paid off....scary thought. I'm poor and I'll be poor for the rest of my life just to pay off school loans. Plus, our president of school is some stupid cow...she thinks history professors can teach chemistry no problem. Man, I'd like to hit her with a frying pan........a cast iron frying pan!

winneythepooh7 06-04-2004 10:11 AM

Yup. Welcome to the world. I just graduated with my Master's. Tuition alone was about $20,000 each year for 3 years. I made about that much at my job for the year and you all can imagine how expensive it is to live in NYC. My last year I had to take out a private loan just to live on. I owe about $80,000 in student loans between undergrad and grad. I am looking forward to paying that on a Social Worker's salary. I am keeping my fingers crossed that one day in the future loan forebearance will go through.

That's an awesome idea! WOW! I'll have to tell our ladies about this. It would really help out I'm sure. Thanks a lot!

I was too poor to get a lil this past spring but I definitely hope to have saved anough $ to gt one for the fall. I am a SK from Long Beach & I love it here.
Tuition is the pits. I just paid over $500 dollars for ONE class. It's my summer school class & I paid that much money. I believe tuition for one semester is up over $1200 dollars a semester. In comparison to some schools, I know it's not a lot of money but when you are sooooo limited with your budget, it's freaking HARD! Plus, I got a notice that I do not qualify for financial aid b/c my GPA fell below 3.2 so that sucks. I didn't realize financial aid requirements were really that strict!

BabyP 06-04-2004 02:24 PM

TWO WORDS - FAFSA (financial aid which gives you grants) and Amazon.com you can sell books for at least HALF, sometimes even 75 percent of what you paid. I am proof!! I have even sold books and even got most of what I paid for the books back!! I have sold 90 dollars book for 60 dollars!! not bad!! the budget increase doesnt touch me since I get financial aid :D

GeekyPenguin 06-04-2004 03:14 PM

Shouldn't this be in Chit Chat? Or Academics? Or not here?

phigamucsb 06-04-2004 03:30 PM

First of all don't blame Arnold we were left this mess by Gray Davis. I understand your pain as I go to a UC and tuition has increased even more dramatically than at the Cal State's. Your comment about Financial Aid seems a little bit weird b/c the requirements for aid are simply a 2.0 to qualify for a Cal Grant, as well as a Federal Pell Grant. You are eligible for a Cal Grant A with a 3.0 or above and a Cal Grant B with a 2.0 or above (it doesn't really matter as the Cal Grant B offers you more cash). I believe that Arnold's increases in tuition are supposed to be temporary until California can pull itself out of the heaping mess left by Gray Davis.

Keep your hopes high LBSU Sigma Kappa, everything will work out.

By the way do you know any SigEp's at LBSU? One of my good friends is in their house.

I wish I paid $500 for a class. I'm here at school this summer for a mini-mester (5 weeks) taking 2 classes, and each one cost me about $2300!

Okay so I read this earlier and thought it would be a good idea to sell books on Amazon, so I went through my stuff and listed a bunch of my books (I'm in law school) and 2 have already sold today for like 75% of what I paid. If you don't destroy your books this is such a great option! Such a good suggestion!!!!! Thanks!

As a matter of fact, we were paired with the Sig Eps during Greek Week so I do know quite a few of them.
