describe what you do at work.

What is a typical day of work like for you?

Lady Pi Phi 06-01-2004 09:35 AM

Point and click.

I do the same thing over and over again. Occasionally I get to entre something into an excel spreadsheet.

The life of a contract worker. We get to do the crappy work no one else wants or has time for.

ETA: That's only if I actually get work

I sell sports nutrition to the Vain and then counsel them on improving their health and physique in an effort to live more congruently with their vanity.

Depends. If it's non-billable work, all I do is count (the same thing 4 times!), add, subtract, multiply, divide, organize employees into job groups, and explain my findings (in a nutshell).

If I'm doing billable work, I could be doing anything! Today (as I was doing yesterday), I'm checking to see that these job descriptions comply w/ the FLSA overtime regulations. Then I get to go through this employee handbook to determine if their policies are 1-good, 2-comply w/ the law, and 3-corroborate w/ their labor agreement. Then I get to update some COBRA notifications, then do some research for my attorney for the presentation he's doing next month. After that....it depends on what we have!

I answer the phones.
Handle all paperwork for my branch: sign-up and termination paperwork for the consultants, etc.
Sometimes I source candidates or look for jobs for consultants whose project is coming to an end.
Ensure that all ISO 9001:2000 procedures are followed.
Go out to the client sites to visit the consultants.

Office Biatch

I answer phones, do a shite load of photocopying, and get sent out to get lunch, coffee, donuts, etc.

Never thought I be a college graduate and still be going this...but I guess until I figure out the next stage in my life, this job is good enough!

CougADPi 06-02-2004 02:24 PM

Put together an experiment, put it in the machine, play on the computer and wander around for 4 hours, come back, take experiment out, repeat. I love Molecular Biology. Getting 8 hours of pay for maybe 45 minutes of work!

winneythepooh7 06-02-2004 03:00 PM

Well right now I mostly go onto Greek Chat LOL. That will change in 2 weeks though when I start my new position, no more internet access as I will mostly be in the field.

I'm a postpartum nurse on the night shift. Most nights, I have an assignment of 4-6 mothers and their babies. On an average, quiet night, I round on all my patients, doing vital signs and assessments. Then I assess all of their babies. Throughout the night I medicate my patients, feed their babies or assist them with learning to breastfeed, and get my post-op patients up and moving. Then I chart. And chart. And chart some more.

About once a week, I stay in the nursery and just assess, feed, diaper, and admit babies. People think night shift is quiet and boring (one patient recently asked a coworker of mine where we slept-as if!) but the same emergencies and procedures can happen night or day (and the babies need to eat!). Plus, we tend to have less staff on at night.

I work on the rooftops at Wrigley field.
About 3 hours before the game, we set up tables, carry ice/food/beer/soda up 4 flights of stairs, set up all the food and bar, clean bathrooms, etc...make it pretty...
then I open and serve drinks until the game's done.
Then cleanup.

I love it!

I work at a shoe store (right now just on the weekends, normally during the week but summer school is a timehog) so a normal day for me consists of dodging mallwalkers to get to our door, then having to say 'No ma'am, we don't open until 10 (11), I'm sorry." After that I turn on the lights, open the registers, turn on the Muzak, prepare the direct sales, tell the old hag pounding on the door that she can't come in because we have another 15 minutes, send out the direct sales, and open the store for the whiny old biddies. Then I sell shoes.

GammaPhiBabe 06-02-2004 10:24 PM

I design t-shirts and handle some sales/accounts for those. :) I also do layout for promotional materials like print ads and brochures and I occasionally write and produce television and radio ads.

And I'm also a grad student, so if I'm not working, I'm reading for class or writing a paper!

I spend a lot of time in front of the computer.

Only at the Admiral. Only on free senior citizen night. Only if I'm tripping.

Get it straight.

I really am - I've been selling shoes for three years now between three different jobs, which is scary considering I've only been eligible to work for six...yikes! ;)
