Cars you've owned

I'm not sure if theres already a thread about this, but I was wondering what types of cars you've all owned.. And why you got rid of it. (crash, age, lottery, sugar daddy)

- 96 Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo (Got this car against my mom's wishes - Thanks dad! - when I was 15ish... Got rid of it just after I turned 16 because it kept having expensive problems..

- 99 Mazda Millenia - Traded old car in on this.. I was probably 16 1/2.. Loved this car, but I totaled it in bad weather not too long ago.

- 2002 Explorer Sport - Bought this with insurance money... Its a nice change. I've had it for about 2 months now (I'm almost 19 now)

Thats about it... I hope the explorer will hold up for a while. Its gotta last me through college.

Your turn.

Learned to drive in a 96 Ford Taurus
My first car was an 88 Plymouth Sundance (I called her Rosie, but "Satan" would have been more appropriate)
When I left for college I got a 97 Mazda Protege, "Rice Rocket"
For Christmas (2002) I got a 97 Ford Escort. Promptly totalled it.
I drove a 96 Civic for awhile, until this past August when I bought a 94 Accord.

I have driven far too many cars.

1989 Chevorlet Blazer S-10 4x4, 4.3L -- great car. Was my dad's old car. I drove it to about 140K miles, then got a new car. Kept the S-10 though to use as a hand-me-down to my little brother.

1995 Toyota 4-Runner. I got this thing in 1999 at 60K miles. Was a decent car until early 2003 when I took it in to have something checked and found it needed $2500 worth of "routine maintenance". It was over 120K miles at this point so I traded it in.

2003 Honda Element. So far the ideal car for me. Great car decent gas mileage, huge on the inside.

AXJules 05-30-2004 01:18 AM

1994 Pontiac Grand Prix was my first car. It was hot, I loved it...drove it from the time I was 16 until it got evil when I was 20. The alternator broke three times and the Prix drove me into a tree.

Now I have a 99 Toyota Solara and it is my child!!! I never want another car, unless its a new Solara Convertible ;)

CardinalSM 05-30-2004 01:26 AM

1995 Ford Probe: got this when I was 15 because my dad insisted on me learning to drive on stick shift. Fast, fun, absolutely loved this car. BUT, apparently it was a magnet to other cars because I came within 100 bucks of totaling it TWICE within the first 4 months of having my liscence.

1996 Ford Exploder/Explorer: Parents made me sell the Probe and get something bigger since I had a tendency towards accidents, so I bought this piece of crap for 3000 bucks off the guy next door. It worked most of the time for about 2 years and then my parents decided that me driving it back and forth 350 miles each way to school was a bad idea when it almost exploded on I-75. Lots of fun, let me tell ya.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (aka Jesse the Jeep): was my mom's but she bought a Ford Escape so she gave it to me after the Exploder incident. I love it!! It is my first car with less than 100k miles and the transmission isn't threatening to fall out the bottom which is a definite improvement over the last!

twhrider13 05-30-2004 02:14 AM

1994 Pontiac Sunbird--the cheapest car GMC ever made, and it was obvious, too. The thing was a piece of crap. I had to beg for two years to get rid of it.

1996 Pontiac Firebird--my current car. While I was begging to get rid of the aforementioned Sunbird, I was begging for the Firebird. She was a little older than what I had originally wanted (and I really wanted a Trans Am), but I've since realized that this little silver car has a personality all of her own, and I love her more than anything. Even though she does start pouting about once every three months and gets sick in some way so she can have attention! (Yes, I am obsessed with my car. I wrecked her last February, and I cried for two weeks and drove the people at the shop crazy until I finally got her back.)

TigerLilly 05-30-2004 05:17 AM

I got my driver's license (and first car) last May. Actually my uncle gave me the car in April but wouldn't let me have it until I learned to drive and got my license, which took me 2 months. :D
The car is a 1985 VW Cabriolet and I love it -- it's a cute little car with stick shift, CD player, and best of all, convertible. It's in really great condition with only like 20,000 miles on it, because my uncle's had it since it was new and he didn't drive it that much.
However, it doesn't have power steering, which can be a real pain sometimes, so his name is Persnickety.

mmcat 05-30-2004 09:09 AM

hyundai accent...not fancy but it runs well and has good gas mileage.

AlphaSigOU 05-30-2004 09:13 AM

Lessee...

First car was my mother's 1980 Chevy Malibu Classic four-door; served me well in college and while I was waiting to report for basic training in the Air Force.

After getting out, bought a 1983 Ford Escort. Piece of shit car. Later got a 1987 Toyota Corolla, but when I lost my job it got repossessed.

Then got a 1989 Eagle Premier... lesson learned in buying a car without seriously checking it... Gawd, that was an even worse POS.

Bought my first Thunderbird (a 1995 LX V8) used, then lost it in a weather-related wreck. Then bought a 1998 Mustang V6, wrecked that as well, currently back to a 1997 Thunderbird LX V8.

DGqueen17 05-30-2004 10:07 AM

I drove a 1999 Honda Accord for a few months when I first got my license and we were still car shopping for me.

Then I got a 1999 Eclipse in silver which I loved more than anything until I realized it was a piece of shit. The brakes went bad, it wouldn't go up hills well(which sucks in WV), I had bad rotors and one of the tires just wouldn't keep air in it.

So about 2 months ago I got a new 2003 Eclipse Sypder in black and now it's all pimp with my Delta Gamma sticker :D

1st car-2000 Acura Integra- silver - my first pride and joy. my dad bought it right after high school graduation. i only had the car for 6 months in the year 2000. my dad had just got out of the hospital and was unable to drive for awhile. he was also living in ocala and gainesville. so i had to make constant trips from jacksonville to be there for him. my dad felt bad cause i put 17,000 on the car in 6 months. so we traded it in.

2nd car- 2001 Toyota Celica- dark blue I got this car in December of 2000. i adored this car. it also became the source for a number of traffic tickets. i had this car almost three years. a lot of life changing moments happened to me while i had this car. the car soon became the source of bad memories. driving the car became a terrifying experience. so i finally got to get rid of it

3rd car- 2004 Honda Accord - silver i got this car in October of 2003. i LOOOOOVE this car. i love taking care of this car. it makes me feel wonderful when i drive it. it is loaded with all kinds of amazing things. the car is 8 months old and it still smells brand new. i hope this car stays around for a long time. lol...my dad does too.

i know i am spoiled. i went through three brand new cars in 4 years.

1993 Ford Mustang LX. My parents gave it to me, so how could I complain? Traded it in as soon as I graduated from college and got a job for a...

2002 Nissan Sentra GXE, which I still have.

Rio_Kohitsuji 05-30-2004 12:18 PM

High School- '89 Grand Am, red w/grey trim, a.k.a "Gredel"- loved this car :) Because it was a crappy car, I could do anything to it and the parents wouldn't get too upset...lol...I never knew this car could be ramped so well ;)

In College- '94 Plymouth Sundance, dark pinkish, "The Clit Mobile" (NOT my idea...) - Great little car for to-and-from the school, good gas milage, never have had much trouble. Plus, it was given to my by my favorite older sister as a graduation gift from high school. :D

Out College- '97 GMC Jimmy, marroon w/silver trim, "The Truck"- I only drive this when I'm not in school due to the gas milage and it'll get banged up if I park it at the school. This is my baby :D

91 Toyota Camry- P.O.S.
66 Mustang- Loved this car to death, but dropped way to much money into it
02- VW Gti- Getting bored with this but I'm way to broke to get anything else

cntryZTA5 05-30-2004 02:10 PM

1st car: 1980 Mazda RX-7. I paid $500 for it and drove this all through high school. I loved this car...it was so sporty and fun to drive. That is, until I blew out the engine.

2nd car: 1986 Ford Thunderbird. I loathed this car. I had nothing but problems with it. It had a moonroof that wouldn't open and leaked when it rained. The passenger window wouldn't roll down. The power locks wouldn't work. The lining of the roof was coming off. One time I had to put the belt back on 3-4 times just to get home from someone's house (all of 5 miles). I traded it in.

3rd car: 1999 Ford Ranger. This is the first new car I bought and paid off myself. I loved this truck. It ran great and I never had any problems with it. Plus I loved being a girl with a truck :) . I actually sold it yesterday.

4th car: 2004 Honda Civic EX. Hopefully I will love this car as well. I love that its an automatic, power everything, moonroof, cd etc. Plus, its supposed to get awesome gas mileage.

bluefish81 05-30-2004 02:29 PM

1989 Buick Century - amazingly dependable, but ugly as hell... and I had it until the fall of 2002 - too bad it never had air conditioning the entire time.
1999 Mazda 626 ES - I love my Mazda and will run it into the ground, I'm sure. My old car got better mileage but I also used to drive longer distances. When your roundtrip commute is less than 6 miles a day - I doubt anything is going to get good mileage.

'92 Pontiac Grand Am--this was my first car, and I got it for Christmas my junior year of high school. It was red (my favorite car color of all time) with grey interior, but it only had a tape player. I had a cute little license plate on the front of it that had my initials spelled out in those nautical symbols--remember those?--but unfortunately, the plate (along with the front end of the car) got shattered to bits when I rear-ended this little b*tch I went to school with at a stoplight one morning. It was foggy, my brakes needed working on, and...well, I'm sure you can imagine.

'93 Dodge Dakota--I loved this truck! My parents got it for me as a high school graduation present shortly after the untimely demise of my Grand Am, and I never had any trouble with it whatsoever. I actually still have it, but it's sort of become the family farm truck since I got my other car. It's red, with grey interior, no power anything but it has a CD player which came in really handy for entertainment when I was dating my ex in Ohio and I had to drive there every other weekend. I really miss that truck now that I'm in town, but I'm sure my stepdad is taking good care of it.

'04 Dodge Neon--this is my new car. I bought it myself, so even though it's only a Neon I treat it like a Bentley because I'm making the payments, dammit. It's black, with grey interior, CD player, power windows (this is awesome, because my truck had the kind you have to roll down), and that's about it...but I really like it now that gas is $2 a gallon because it gets really good mileage.

Gina1201 05-30-2004 03:23 PM

1989 Dodge Omni -This was my very first car and I LOVED it to death!! It was red but the two front doors were both brown. I wanted something to drive to school so bad, since I was literally the last person in my class to start driving, I didn't get my license until my senior year of HS. I begged and begged for a car and this is what I got until the muffler went bad and to have it fixed would have cost more than what the car was worth. So I then got a . . .

1994 Geo Tracker -The problem with this car was the it was a stick, which I can't drive. My uncle tried to teach me how, but it was no use. So my mom ended up with the car and I got a . . .

1998 Mercury Mountaineer -This car was my grandma's before she passed. Since it was still under lease my grandfather told me I could keep it until the lease was up. When the lease was up it was traded for a . . .

2001 Mercury Cougar -which I LOVED when I first got it but it has been nothing but a pain for the past 3 1/2 years. Luckily, I'm getting a new car this fall, a 2005 Mercury Mariner. :D

sairose 05-30-2004 03:28 PM

1993 Chevy Beretta--eh, ok car I guess. Too bad I totalled it.

1989 Subaru GL--I grew really attached to this little car...but...it leaked transmission fluid like CRAZY, the air conditioning blew up (literally), and then it just died while I was in the middle of one of the busiest intersections in town. So, that did it.

1997 Mercury Tracer--what I now drive, and have driven for about a year and a half. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this car. It leaks no fluids, it drives nicely, is very comfortable, roomy, gets good mileage, and I'm convinced it must be indestructable!! I backed up and hit a pole outside of Petco...and I hit it HARD...and it did NOTHING to my car. Then, waiting to turn out of Wal-Mart a few weeks ago, a lady rearended me...and all it did was shake the dust off the bumper! LOL I would HIGHLY recommend this car to anyone; it was pretty inexpensive (I got it for $3500), and it's just a great car.

Nikki_DZ 05-30-2004 04:04 PM

1985 Buick Regal-paid $1000 for it with my hard earned babysitting money when I was 15. Unfortunately, it was a P.O.S., and I only drove it for two weeks after I got my license. It was so bad, I opted to drive my mom's mini-van until I could save up the money to buy a decent car.

1990 Pontiac Grand Prix SE-LOVED this car. Power everything, sunroof. Too bad the alternator had a pesky little habit of going out every 5-6 months. Finally sold it the summer before my junior year of college.

1998 Geo Metro-I have to admit, I was fond of my "Bertie". It was a 5 speed, and I didn't know how to drive stick until then. I bought it the day before I left to go back to school in the fall, and did a crash course in manual transmissions. It got awesome gas mileage, and the hatchback was handy for hauling stuff.

Now we have a 2001 Accord (my car) which I love, and a 1999 Taurus (hubby's car) which is quite the lemon. We're looking at trading it in for either a hybrid Civic or a Subaru Outback.

valkyrie 05-30-2004 04:26 PM

My first car ever was a Ford Escort station wagon named Bob. After that, I had a Ford Tempo named Mario -- both purchased by my parents who have a thing for American cars that I don't understand. After Mario died, I had my parents' old car, a Pontiac Bonneville named Winona. After that, my ex and I had a '93 Honda Civic EX that he still has. That was a nice little car.

Now I have the first car I've ever purchased for myself, a 2002 Subaru Outback Sport. I love her, but haven't named her yet. She did such a good job driving up and down mountain roads in the snow this winter.

Xylochick216 05-30-2004 06:28 PM

I always get the hand-me-down cars that suck that keep dying on me  My parents don't understand how I've gone through 3 cars, but with the money they've spent, they could have gotten something nice.

*1988 Pontiac Grand Prix-- I got "Pepper" when I was 15. She was maroon and had all the features for 1988. But her windows fell out when I rolled them back up, so I couldn't go to a drive-through. Her AC stopped working the summer between my freshman and sophomore years of college, and she died a week before I went back to school. At the end of my street. At midnight.

*1992 Mercury Sable Wagon-- This car was my mom's, but she gave it to me because the AC broke and she couldn't deal without AC. Apparently I could :p It had leather seats, and it was hell in the summer. It drove well, though. It died this summer right after someone hit Mom while she was driving Dad's car and totalled that one. Mom and Dad both got new cars.

*1995 Dodge Intrepid-- "Irma" was Mom's car til her wreck. Then Mom decided she needed an SUV, so again I got the hand-me-down. She has over 111,000 miles and no special features. She's on her last legs and about to die. She's a boat and impossible to park. I'm now looking for a job so I can buy a CR-V, XTerra, or my dream car, a Nissan Pathfinder :D

PhiPsiRuss 05-30-2004 06:37 PM

I had a 1980 Chevy Malibu when I was at FSU. It was built during Detroit's dark years, and performed like it.

winnieb 05-31-2004 01:03 AM

1st Car--- 89 Plymouth Sundance
2nd Car-- 89 Ford Mustang
3rd Car--- 95 Chrysler LeBaron convertible
4th Car-- 97 Dodge Intrepid (married and pg--carseat didn't seem safe in the convertible! :( )
5th Car--- 02 Ford Expedition

These are MY cars only-- since getting married i can add a 95 Ford Ranger, a 96 or 7 Ranger, and a 95 Ford Bronco---- not to mention my husbands work trucks, that I don't ever drive.

My first car ever was a 1986 Mercury Sable aka the Black Beast. It was a hand-me-down from my uncle.

After that died, I inherited my dad's 1993 Jimmy. That wasn't a bad car until the wheel fell off and I wrecked into an embankment.

Then I got my baby--my silver 2003 VW New Beetle. The license plate? Alikat2 :)

ThetaPrincess24 05-31-2004 03:15 PM

New Red Honda Civic '95--My first car when I was 16. EX model with power windows, power locks, automatic transmission, and power sunroof. An Alpine cd player was installed soon after purchase as well as JBL speckers and an amp in the trunk(to my dad's dismay). It was a good car and sweet for my taste at the time. Dad did well.

Current car--- New Honda CRV--my graduation present in December 2003. My favorite of the two, again my dad did well :). I named it Athena after the greek goddess of Wisdom. it is garnet in color, power windows, power locks, power sunroof, real time 4 wheel drive, storage compartment under the passenger side seat, valet key with it's own compartment, rear window wiper, running boards, 6 disc cd changer in dash, roof rack, back windows are tinted, and it also came with a nifty table and room for a cooler underneath the table........ummmmm cloth/vinyl interior that is tan in color, came with floor mats........automatic transmission........Humane Society License plate(if any of you have seen the ridiculous looking regular kentucky license plate then you know the main reason as to why I paid extra for that plate). Off the bat that's all that comes to my mind about my car that I love so so much other than I keep two folding chairs in the back plus a blanket(that I use to cover the back seat for my dog). I am truly the queen the road in this vehicle and my dog is the princess.

AlphaGamDiva 05-31-2004 04:39 PM

my one and only car: a 99 white neon

she's precious, but is having issues as of late....some head gasket (sp?) problems, some belt troubles, etc, etc.....

but i adore my mini-moo (she's white with some cow print seat covers), and i'll have her until she fully dies away.

RxyChrldr 06-01-2004 02:49 AM

I bought a new Eclipse in 98 as my first car..with my "college fund" :) and had that until I bought my brother's car this past summer before he moved to Japan..so now it's a 98 Honda Accord V6 that I love ten times better than my little eclipse..I prefer the mommy-sedan over the sports car, go figure!

AGDee 06-01-2004 06:42 AM

1975 Buick Apollo that my brother and I shared. The choke was bad and stuck all the time so if it was damp outside, I had to stick a screw driver in the choke to start it. Everybody laughed. It finally died and while in college my dad got me a ...

1976 Cutlass Supreme. Not a bad car, at least I had one! Most didn't wen I was a sophomore (1984/85). The floor on the passenger side rusted out while I had people sitting there and the heat from the catalytic converter started the carpet on fire while we were on a mini-road trip. That was pretty funny. Eventually the transmission went and dad got me a ...

1977 Buick Regal. By far the best car I've ever had. V8/350, while quite a gas hog (probably 9 mpg), gas was cheap then (less than $1). Powerful, solid, ugly color (lime green), but ran great. For some reason, when I graduated from college, I wanted a new car and got a brand new...

1988 Cavalier. Also a good car. Great gas mileage, but going from a V8 to one of the earlier 4L engines was a trip. Had to turn off the A/C if I had to pass someone! I drove it hard, til 1994 when I had my first child and couldn't hardly get a car seat in the back seat, so I got a used...

1991 Transport. It was fairly solid mechanically, had definitely been in a front end collision at some point. It was nice when I had to haul all the baby stuff everywhere. The A/C went in '99 and I can't live without A/C. The ex (who I was still married to at the time) thought we shouldn't put any money into it. So I bought a ...

New 1999 Cavalier. The car I drive today. It's had some issues lately, we'll see how long it lasts. It has 81,000 miles on it now and I hope it lasts another 3 or 4 years, but it's getting iffy. We'll see.

Every car I've had drove to at least 130,000 and I want this one to as well.
