ZTA - Random

We need to get this forum going!!!! :)

I decided to create a random thread especially for ZTAs much like the Chit Chat forum has. Post any of your random thoughts here.

We know about each other's chapters and events so this thread will help us learn more about each other.

I'll start:

I'm starting to pack up everything in my apartment for the big move in July. My sister has wanted our old NES set for a long time. I hardly ever use it and really don't feel like moving it and rehooking it up to my TV in my new apartment. I guess I got bitten by the nice bug today; I called her up and told her she can have it when she comes to visit me next weekend. I've never seen her so excited.

cntryZTA5 05-28-2004 03:46 PM

This is more like a vent. I am getting ready to sell/ trade in my truck. On Wednesday, a part of my front bumper was pulled off by the car in front of me (apparently I pulled up too far and onto her hitch). Now I have to pay $137 for the new part. Instead of going to get my new car this weekend, I aave to wait for the part to come in  .

Dianne 05-28-2004 04:27 PM

Great. I like this thread because most of my thoughts are random. So I just have to say that I can't wait for this school year to be over because I am SO SICK of being a TA. If nothing else, this experience has taught me that teaching is definitely NOT my calling! (sorry to disappoint our wonderful founders) I swear, some of my students must be brain-damaged. They also seem to think I have no other life and that I live solely to help them with their homework. For some reason they don't get it that *I* take classes too and am also trying to get a degree. And you know, I've only been out of college for a year, and I really don't remember my collegiate peers being so ridiculously dense. Now, I must say that not ALL of my students are dumb and annoying, but enough of them are to grate on my nerves. BTW, I TA a class called Geologic Principles. So with that being said, I'm going to go work on my 8-10 page paper for my tectonics class.

ZTAngel 05-28-2004 04:49 PM

Is the class you're teaching a general education elective or is it a class that the students need for their major? That could be the difference. During freshman year, I took Physical Geography (where we learned about rocks and soil) as an elective satisfy my general education science elective. I never really studied because I didn't care and the subject didn't interest me (sorry Diane! I know it's your interest! :) ). As for my business classes, I tried in those classes because the subject matter interested me.

FSUZeta 05-28-2004 06:27 PM

does anyone have an educated opinion on cancun or cozumel? my sister-in=law has suggested that our families meet there during the christmas holidays. she(and my in-laws) have stayed at an all-inclusive resort and say the price is great i have never been to mexico and am a little concerned about montezuma's revenge. lisa

ZTAngel 05-29-2004 05:22 AM

Why am I up at 5am? Because we're leaving for Atlanta in 15 minutes. I haven't seen this time of day in a while.

cntryZTA5 05-29-2004 10:56 PM

I got a new car today:D ! Its a 2004 Honda Civic, pearl blue!

This makes up for the post about my truck!

I need to find a reputable online school type of thing for my Medical Transcription courses. I have Crohn's Disease, so if I can avoid classes that are actually taught in classrooms, my life would be so much easier.

I've been in tears all week because I haven't been excited about my 21st birthday since I was diagnosed with this damn disease back in November. My military benefits run out on June 5th (the day before my birthday) and I will have no health insurance after that. I have a 12-month waiting period once Mr. Bunny and I are married (IN OCTOBER) before I can get on his insurance. I'm applying for WIC and getting my card for the local free clinic on Tuesday and it's kind of embarrassing. But, you gotta do what you gotta do, I guess :(

I'm so sorry that you're going through this. One of my chapter sisters was being tested for Crohn's Disease. She didn't turn out to have it, but I know it can be very painful.

Know that your ZTA sisters are here for you! :)

My family was on WIC for a while when my sisters were babies & toddlers. It was a very eye-opening experience going to the office all of us. We got funny looks because we looked like we didn't belong there but statistically speaking, we did. My mom felt guilty at times but in the long run not so much since my sisters were healthier thanks to the great milk, cheese and cereals! Teaching in a high needs area I feel like that experience has helped me relate to the families a little better. Hang in there, we're here for you!

Dianne 06-02-2004 01:24 PM

So I am having a little freak-out today. I am going to be a bridesmaid in my pledge sister's wedding on June 12th - in South Carolina. I am here in California and am flying out on the 10th. The bridesmaids dresses have still not arrived!! Annnnnd, once they finally arrive at the dress shop in Lexington, SC, they have to overnight the dress to me so that I can get the alterations done. YIKES!!! I am totally stressing! But on a positive note, I am sooooooooo ready for a trip home. Last time I was in SC was Christmas.

Random Story

So, my roommate and I are moving in the middle of July and we both have a lot of stuff to buy.
Occasionally, we will get 20% off coupons in the mail from Bed, Bath & Beyond. The problem is that there is only 1 and we both need way more than 1 for each of us.
Right by the mailboxes in our apartment complex is a trash can for people to throw their junk mail into. People throw those Bed, Bath & Beyond coupons away as if they are junk mail. I think not!!!!
My roommate and I dug through the trash can to grab some coupons. I assure you that there was only junk mail in there and no rotting food/other nasty things. We aren't that gross.
As we're picking through the trash, the hot guy that my roomie and me have had a crush on since the day we moved in came walking up. We first spotted him the day we moved in as we were sweating and trying to grab heavy boxes (unsuccessfully) off of the U-Haul. He drove by in his Jaguar. It was love at first sight.
Our Apartment Complex Boyfriend (ACB for short) was looking at us weird as he walked over to the mailboxes. I guess I'd look at us weird, too. I saw him pull out the coupon from the mailbox.

Me: Are you going to be using that?
ACB: No. In fact, I'll hand it to you. That way, you don't have to pick through the trash to get it.
Me: Cool!
ACB: Why do y'all need so many coupons anyway? (my roomie and I had found 14 total at this point)
Roomie: We're moving and have a lot of stuff to buy.
ACB: I own a furniture store. If you guys need furniture, you should stop by.
Me: Errr, no offense but you just caught us digging through a trash can for coupons so we definitely don't have the money for nice, new furniture.
ACB: <snicker>

I called my dad later to let him know how resourceful I am. (We gathered 23 coupons total...yay us!) He said, "I'm so glad that my daughter, the college graduate, was picking through a trash can for coupons. You would think you'd stop doing that after you finished school." Hey...old habits die hard.

PenguinTrax 06-03-2004 11:37 AM

Hey, I was mourning the fact that I had a $5 off and 20% BB&B coupons that expired on Tuesday unused.

Almost as bad as letting the 40% Michaels Crafts coupons go unused.

Perish the thought!

When I was in college and grocery stores used to have double and triple coupons, my dad and I used to have a friendly competition on who could get the most deducted from the grocery bill (% by total, not in acutal $).

You're in luck! A friend of mine use to work at BB&B and told me that they will always take the coupons even if they are expired.

FSUZeta 06-04-2004 05:43 PM

ditch the acb!

he is a cad if he let you two sweet young things move heavy boxes and did not offer to help(or at least offer you a glass of sweet tea!!)

ztakrissy 06-04-2004 10:08 PM

Well, thanks to my roommates' boyfriend (she is a fellow ZTA) my car is dented! He was trying to put some bedrails in her car for her Monday (it was pouring down rain) and I was parked next to her car, well, I heard a loud bang so I looked out the window and saw him trying to wipe something off my car--yep! He dropped one of the rails on it and caused a dent with a deep scratch on my rear passenger door! He offered to pay for it, but I just wish it would have never happened. Now it's awkward to see him!

ZTAngel 06-05-2004 08:40 AM

I hate being up early on a Saturday but I have to get to Publix early before the stock crew throws out all their boxes. I need them for moving.

Lisa- If you saw how good looking ACB was, you wouldn't care that he didn't help move the heavy boxes. ;) It's ok. My real boyfriend came by later on after work to move the furniture. That was the important part....there's no way my roommate and me could lift a mattress on our own!

FSUZeta 06-05-2004 02:20 PM

well,

if he's that good looking i'll excuse him this once! he must be a hunk! good luck with your move!!lisa

I started a new part time job at Bath & Body Works last month. Well, I have recently found out that 2 of my co-workers are ZTA's from our fabulous new chapter at USF! :D Very cool ladies too I might add.

Are you going to help out with fall recruitment at USF?

btw, I heard the chapter is doing great! One of my sisters was telling me that many of the girls at USF decided not to go through formal recruitment last year because they wanted to wait until ZTA's colonization!

ztabchbum 06-11-2004 02:17 PM

I'm seriously considering helping out next fall. I just have to see which alums are going to be there (it's a LONG story that doesn't need to be aired).

PenguinTrax 06-11-2004 04:21 PM

I committed a Stupid Barb Trick and transferred money between my PayPal accounts and did it backwards. I sent money from my cash account to my credit card account (instead of the other way 'round) and cost myself 84 cents. DOH!

Where's that Banging head against the wall smilie when I need it.

ZTABullwinkle 06-11-2004 07:09 PM

Couldn't find that one..would this one work? This may be appropriate also!

CONGRATS! I would give anything to live in a house. I HATE apartments. But, I don't have any money to put down and my credit is HORRIBLE...so I guess I'll just have to deal with living in a 8x8 cell - at least it feels that way. :(

Well, it's not my own place. I wish it were. I have the money to put down but I don't think I could get a big enough mortgage. The catch-22 of being a recent college grad. :( Plus, it would just be me all by myself in a house.
I met a girl who has a house down the street from me. She just graduated and she's a Pi Phi alum (we'll have a panhellenic household). I'm just excited to finally be out of an apartment!

It was like being let out of a prison when I moved out of the dorms in May after graduation.

ZTAngel 06-28-2004 08:42 AM

Just venting.....

So, I really can't stand one of my co-workers.

This guy is lazy and can never get anything done. That's fine and dandy except it ends up making me look bad. Since he's directly above me in the management hierarchy, he is supposed to give me a lot of his information so that I can do my work. He doesn't.
We'll just call this guy "Bob".
Last week, I had to send up my marketing/client report to the company's Board of Directors. Bob needed to give me his figures and numbers from his projects in order for me to complete my marketing report. I told him a week before that I would need this information and gave him a specific date for when I would need his numbers. The day that it was due, I went into his office to ask him where it was. He told me that he hadn't looked at it yet. It's really easy for him to write down his figures/numbers. All he has to do is look them up on a spreadsheet he has and just write them down on a piece of paper. It takes 5 minutes...tops. About an hour later, I went into his office again. He still hadn't looked at it. By now, I had one of the top managers calling me to find out where it was. Now the Board of Directors think that I am being lazy. I marched into Bob's office and said, "Look, I need this within the next 5 minutes or else I'm going to be the one who gets in trouble." He groaned. It took him less than 2 minutes to finally get me what I needed.
I would give him more slack if he had a lot of things to do but he doesn't. He works on his kid's Boy Scouting stuff (he's the troop leader) all day. We know this because we'll have all this Boy Scout info being printed out on one of our office printers. Jeez...if you're not doing any real work at least try to be slick about it.
He really pissed off another co-worker last week. There's a project we're working on and Bob charged all his time to this project. By the end of the week, there was no money left in the budget for this project. He had nothing completed. Lucky me, as the marketer, I got to go to the client and ask for more money since we had none left for the project. Yeah, their goes our good relations. Now my other co-worker has to work on his portion of the project at home since there's no money in the budget for him to get paid for it.
We have a proposal due on Friday that we have known about for over a month. I can't do my part until Bob gets his part done. I'm at a standstill. Bob claims that he can't do his part until this guy in our Vermont office, Chris, does his part. On Friday, Bob calls out sick. How convenient. Chris calls me and tells me that the only way he can work on his part is if Bob gave him some necessary information. Bob never bothered. I was scrambling around the office trying to find Chris the information but no such luck. I left Bob a note that said to call Chris immediately on Monday morning. Has he done this yet? Of course not. He's busy talking to one of his kids on the phone right now. He just left his house an hour ago!
So, this proposal is due on Friday and I have nothing for ir. I have had to go into work on the weekends because of this guy getting me things at last minute. I do NOT want to be at work on a holiday weekend.
My boss knows what's going on but does not want to fire Bob because he feels bad....Bob is the only person working in his family (his wife is a stay-at-home mom). You would think this would make Bob work harder since he's the only income provider but he is lazy, lazy, lazy.
UGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dianne 06-28-2004 04:01 PM

That sucks about your boss. How do people like that get promoted in the first place?

Anyhoo, apropos nothing (this is the random thread, right), I am the new Vice President of Programming for my alumnae chapter. Strangely enough, I don't really get to plan a whole lot. We meet once a month, so some months are already taken up - like Race for the Cure in October and Silicon Valley Panhellenic Dinner in May. I get the feeling that the ladies in the chapter like doing the same thing over and over again. So I guess I'm the new blood they need to stir things up...

One thing I'm really hot on is touring one of the wineries in the Santa Cruz mountains. A little touring, a little wine-tasting. Who wouldn't love that?

ZTAMich 06-28-2004 07:34 PM

My first year of teaching is OVER. Hello summer vacation! I'll be taking 2 grad school classes for the rest of June & all of July then it's VACATION allll of August! I'm going to get the Stepping Up ceremony of my Kindergarten class done on a picture CD so later this week if anyone wants to see pictures of my darlings from the Bronx let me know!

I've done this twice with my alumnae chapter (Inland/ Pomona). We had a great time wine tasting! Hopefully you'll be able to go!

I bought a Hersey's bar today (bad ZTAngel) and they have this Summer of Happiness game/contest thing going on. I didn't win the big road trip prize but I did win a free 7oz. bag of Jolly Ranchers. Yay!

Quiet time!

My husband took the kids and a couple of their friends to a local waterpark today. It is just me and the bunny in the house and it is so QUIET and wonderful!

With this being my first summer staying home with the kids, I had tons of fun things planned but we've only done one thing on the list so far. In a couple of weeks though we're driving to the beach at Corpus Christi, then on the way back to Dallas, we're going camping, tubing down the Guadalupe River, then going to Schlitterbahn (voted one of the 10 best waterparks in America). That will be a nice way to end the summer.

School starts August 4th!

OMG! I can't believe school starts on August 4 for your kids. I am a first and second grade teacher who is enjoying her summer. I just finished three masters courses and I am planning to take it easy until I report back to school on August 25.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
