SK on MTV

MTV wants to film our chapter of Sigma Kappa for TRL this Monday! We are so excited! I don't know if we'll be going on live or be taped for a later broadcast but it should be so much fun! I love Long Beach!!!

P.S. I say it might be taped b/c of the time they are filming us so I doubt it will be live. We might just be a taped segment but I could be wrong. What time does TRL air anyways?

navane 05-28-2004 01:38 AM

Cool!!!!! :D

No self respecting sorority lady would want her letters on MTV. The people that go out of their way to distort greek life and put on shows like Sorority Life and Fraternity Life do not deserve to be in your presence. Think more highly of yourself.

Does your Inter/National office know about this?

Ditto.

Being on MTV is one thing. Being on MTV while acting as a representative of your sorority is another.

I know Alpha Gams need permission from IHQ before being photographed/filmed by the media when wearing letters and representing the organization. I'm guessing other NPCs are the same way.

That being said, it's great that you'll be on TRL, but to avoid stepping on any toes, maybe it's best to leave the SK name out of your experience.

Just my $19.04!

Ditto, ditto and ditto! Enjoy the TRL ride, but leave your letters at home that day. If it's a condition of appearing on the show, just say thanks but no thanks. If it's truly crucial for some reason that your chapter has such exposure, call SK headquarters and obtain permission first. It's not worth the risks.

Honestly, I cannot imagine why sorority woman would want to be in her letters on MTV, but that's just me.

_Lisa_ 05-28-2004 08:50 AM

Honestly, the way you make it sound is that MTV wants your chapter of Sigma Kappa specifically. And I don't think its a good idea @ all.

Sigma Kappa should not be on MTV. I think its great that you girls get to be on TRL, but don't open the door for Sigma Kappa's reputation to be hurt in any way!

SGill4613 05-28-2004 10:52 AM

Some people may say that any PR is good PR, but I just challange you to look at it in a different way.

Unless you've invited the media there for something good that you've done, you probably don't want them there.

Besides, anyone who watches MTV even semi-regurally, knows that they tell people that they're going to put them on one show and then film for completely different purposes.

BE SMART

Our National would flip and our founders would be rolling in their graves.

aopirose 05-28-2004 11:16 AM

If your chapter hasn't done so, contact your advisers and HQ ASAP! AOII issued a statement last year specifically stating for chapters NOT to participate in TRL events. If your HQ has given its permission then I say congratulations and I hope that the experience is postitive.

I don't know about Nationals giving permission for this particular incidence, but our handbook does not condone it in any way.

Yeah our policy is similar in that you have get HQ permission "before being photographed/filmed by the media when wearing letters and representing the organization." It was just that several chapters had contacted HQ for permission. HQ saw the trend and issued a reminder.

CASIGKAP 05-28-2004 01:58 PM

WOW! I really could not believe all the negativity associated with this topic.

However, I found out that MTV wants us to wear shirts that say Sigma Kappa on them. All your posts suddenly were starting to make sense. I find it odd that they wants everyone to know that we're sorority girls. I'm starting to think that they may not portray us in the most positive light so I have decided to bow out but I don't know if my sisters will do the same. I can only hope that the arguments I present (thanks to all of you) will be heard.

Thanks!

ztabchbum 05-28-2004 02:05 PM

This is how you get ALL of your sisters NOT to participate:

It is against Sigma Kappa's by laws and any sisters that participate will be reprimanded.

Also, contact HQ and let them know what's going on.

Coudn't have said it better myself.

Dove Gal 05-28-2004 02:43 PM

Not to hate on my beloved sorority, but you all need to contact NHQ about this. If you all get on there without their permission NHQ could do somethings to your chapter. So please, please contact them.

33girl 05-28-2004 02:45 PM

Show up for the taping, but NOT in letters, and let MTV know that if they mention on-air that you are Sigma Kappa members you will walk out. See what happens with that.

There's nothing wrong IMO with being on TRL - it's not like it is promoting porn - but for MTV to specifically say that you should all wear t-shirts that say SK says that they're being a little shady and want you for the sorority girl thing. When Greeks were on Remote Control, they wore letters but AFAIK it wasn't because MTV told them to.

XOMichelle 05-28-2004 03:31 PM

Ditto Ditto Ditto. If your sisters go on air, HQ will find out and they will not be happy about it. The reason is MTV likes to use sororities for their sexy, flashy image and that is not the way the sororities want to or should be portrayed.

alphaiota 05-28-2004 03:48 PM

i must agree with what everyone has said. (and this is coming from someone who would love to see our letters loud and proud on tv).
the baseline is this, mtv is trying to get back into good graces with the greek system as a whole. there pitiful way of doing so is getting chapters to agree to wear letters while completely starry eyed at the idea of being on tv.
nationals has made it a rule that permission MUST be obtained prior to any media exposure such as this. and usually nationals will step in by sending a rep.
i agree that yall should show up without letters and see what they say. no harm no foul if you don't end up on tv, but trust me, you don't want to deal with the reprecussions of disobeying nationals. they have ways....... (j/k :D )
let us know how it turns out.

We had the Today Show do a taping here at WSU for "Blue" the 50+ year old pledge. We were invited by the fraternity to a BBQ and were informed that the cameras would be there taping (They followed Blue around for a couple of days). We had to notify Advisory board, and NHQ ASAP. We were not allowed to wear letters, and were required to conduct ourselves in a manner that represented SK and oursleves well.

CALL NHQ, call your advisors, talk with your president. If you don't notify them, you are acting against SK bylaws. I don't say this to be scary, but to let you know that there are consequences when you don't notify the proper people in situations like this. I have been in a situation like yours, so I do know what is supposed to happen.

Wearing letters on the Price is right or in the Live crowd for The Today show on locaiton is one thing, but being asked by MTV to represent your specific chapter, and you will be identified, is quite another.

SurfinDBeach 05-28-2004 07:21 PM

SK at LBSU?

Hey, you're a Sigma Kappa from Long Beach State?

Interesting... There are a few Tekes on this networK (myself included) from "the Beach" that post...

Which one are you? It would be funny if I knew you...

GO BEACH!!!

AlphaPhiBubbles 05-31-2004 05:46 PM

I won't repeat what everyone else is saying...but i agree. I just had an opinion I wanted to share. Sometimes on TRL they will randomly happen to pick a sorority girl to talk during the videos you know? Well even though I am a sorority girl, I get rather nauseated when I hear "and I wanted to give a shout out to all my Alpha Beta sisters at State U! WoOOOO!!!!" and they throw up some hand sign. Just because I can imagine all the other people in the country who aren't greek looking at this girl and going "oh my lord another one of those dumb sorority bimbos getting all cheery"

Not to say that Sigma Kappa would do this, I just think GLO's need to stay off the entire MTV network and all it's sister stations.

ADPiAkron 05-31-2004 05:53 PM

So what was the outcome? TRL is half over here in Ohio (5:35pm)...just wondering....and hoping all sisters decided against it!

Hopefully they realized that it wasn't their decision to make & won't have to deal w/ Nationals...

If they weren't wearing letters, and MTV said nothing about them being Sigma Kappas, then there would be no problem, because nobody would know.

I've been on TV wearing letters unauthorized and nooooobody had a problem. Granted that's because it was a WIAC track meet and nobody watches those except the people who were in them, but still. :p

Nope, we wore them on our own because we were proud!

Wearing letters wasn't mentioned at the auditions, nor was it even mentioned when we showed up at the studio. They just told us not to wear white.

I never heard a peep from our HQ back then. My picture (and another KD contestant's) were printed in our national magazine, so it was not a problem.

Of course, this was 1989...MTV wasn't as "revealing" as it is now 24/7. Back then, MTV was only risque during spring break.

That as well as the fact that one person wearing their letters is different than the whole chapter deciding to (or being asked to) wear their letters in representation of their organization.

She says that they had decided not to wear letters on the show.

Thanks, for anyone missing that thread. I wasn't referring to this particular thread anymore, just a generalization.
