The 1st edition of the GreekChat.com Weight loss challenge

Hi, everyone!

Since school is out and most of you are not in summer school, it is time for the weight loss challenge. I'm looking for some people who are planning to lose weight for the summer, whether it is 20, 25, or more pounds. If you are interested, sign up by next Monday for the challenge. The challenge will begin on June 1st and will end on September 1st. There will be separate post for each week so you can post your progress.

To help track your progress, use www.fitday.com.

Also, I want for you to post your goals for the weight loss challenge. There are no prizes for the most dramatic turn around.

Good luck!

Rollergirl2001 05-25-2004 12:03 AM

Rollergirl2001

My goal is to lose at least 25 pounds and drop at least 3 dress sizes. I won't tell you my weight.

sairose 05-25-2004 12:25 AM

hey, I'm signing up right now! :D

I take meds and just had to switch because my old one made me gain 20 pounds. :( So I feel fat and I wanna look like I did before I had these extra lbs.

Thanks for posting the link! And I'm glad someone is in this with me! :)

blueGBI 05-25-2004 12:31 AM

I'm in!

I want to lose 20 lbs and a dress size. I'm barely in juniors now and I want to get back to my high school size. So I'm going to use this summer to kick start my weight loss!

sairose 05-25-2004 12:32 AM

how do we do this challenge thing? Is it on the site, or what? I registered and entered my weight loss goals and stuff.

sairose 05-25-2004 12:34 AM

Hey, this site is GREAT!! I was looking for one like this and couldn't find one.

And I'm so glad to have 2 others with me! We can be GC weight loss buddies! :D

First, you post your goals here on this post. Then, every week, I will post week 1 and week 2 and so on. On the week post, you post what you did as physical activity and what you ate. And also, if you lost any weight and/or inches, then post it there. We will have this challenge until September 1st.

Rollergirl2001 05-25-2004 12:47 AM

You can use fitday.com to track how many calories you have ate and burned.

AlethiaSi 05-25-2004 12:52 AM

wow- what a great idea! :)

yea i'm definately in- though I only want to lose 10 pounds- its a stubborn ten that I gained while I was in London (too much beer and cadbury chocolate) but I want it gone by September! yay!

I think 10 pounds is only 1/2 sizes- but thats ok- its mostly my stomach i'm concerned about...

swissmiss04 05-25-2004 01:21 AM

Can I join even though I just want to lose 5-7 lbs and only one size???

DZTUBAGIRL 05-25-2004 09:08 AM

This is really cool. Me and 3 of my sisters are staying at school this summer and we all are trying to lose a couple of pounds. I think I want to lose like 20 pounds. It's mostly my stomach and legs that I want to tone up. I hope we all are successful!!!

_Lisa_ 05-25-2004 09:13 AM

I need to lose 50 lbs. I'll sign up!

ztabchbum 05-25-2004 09:47 AM

I am some serious need to lose just over 25lbs. Thanks for the link to such a great site. I've signed up and will keep my eye on this thread (and others like it) so I can keep everyone updated on my progess...as well and know how everyone else is doing. Very cool idea! :) Good luck everyone!!!

Lady Pi Phi 05-25-2004 09:48 AM

I'm in. I want to lose 50 myself.
I probably won't reach 50 by Spetember 1st (my birthday by the way :D )

But hopefully this will give me the motivation to lose some weight.

August 1st is my goal-the web site says I have to lose 5.5 lbs a week to get there. Maybe I should push it back a little. 5.5 lbs a week can't be healthy!

xo_kathy 05-25-2004 10:22 AM

I signed up my info on fittoday.com

I'm hoping to loose about 20 pounds before I have to order my wedding dress in October. I'm not really sure that's too realistic as I'm not so concerned with how I look right now. It's more of a "won't that be nice to look slimmer on the big day!", but at least with these calculators I can sort of see a clearer picture of my eating/exercise habits. And maybe if I have to report to you all I'll actually stick with the plan! :)

Good luck to us all!

Yeah 5.5 pounds is too much. It's better to lsoe it slowly. So even if you don't reach your goal, you'll still be losing and the slower you lose it you'll more likely keep it off.

KSigkid 05-25-2004 10:38 AM

Good luck to all of you; I'm actually about within my fitness goals so I won't be joining in, but good luck with reaching your ideal weights.

Of course.

WCUgirl 05-25-2004 11:06 AM

I don't have a specific weight loss goal, but I would like to get fit and be more active. Mind if I join? I just think that if I'm held accountable to someone (my husband isn't much help, lol. He's the one that convinces me to stay on the couch w/ him!) I will see better results. I need someone to yell at me for watching 90210 reruns and eating ice cream instead of roller blading like I should be!

You can join.

chideltjen 05-25-2004 12:15 PM

I am trying to lose 10 pounds by the end of summer. I am fairly active but my diet sucks. So hopefully recording all that I eat will help me out.

adpialumcsuc 05-25-2004 12:45 PM

Alright I'm in. I'd like to loose 20-25 by September 1st. I am already down 30 since January so that would put me at my first goal of loosing 50 lbs.

Peaches-n-Cream 05-25-2004 01:16 PM

I lost weight in early 2003. It was a challenge, but I did it. I feel good, and my clothes fit better. I lost over 15 pounds. Good luck to all of you! :)

XOMichelle 05-25-2004 02:14 PM

This site is wonderful!! My goal is to lose 13-15 pounds.

You can see my live progress at:
http://www.fitday.com./WebFit/Public...roadrunnerrita

ETA: I really like this website. It makes you look at what you are doing in a very truthful light! I hope I can keep it up through September.

Eclipse 05-25-2004 02:19 PM

I'm in. I've lost about a net of about 25 lbs since February. At my "peak" I had lost 28 lbs, so a gain of about 3 lbs is not too bad, I just want to make sure I don't completely fall off the wagon and gain it back so the accountability will be good for me. My co-workers and I did a fitness challenge from Feb - April and it really helped. The $300.00 on the table for the winner didn't hurt either, and I sooooo enjoyed taking their money!! :D

I'd like to lose an additional 20 - 25 lbs.

As a suggestion, it was helpful for me and my coworkers to state our next week's goals during our weekly weigh-in. We did our weigh-ins on Fridays and went through 4 questions:
*This is what I did WELL this week
*This was a CHALLENGE for me this week:
* These are my GOALS for next week
*This is how you can SUPPORT me (Although this one will be hard since we are not together. Our "support" came in the form of reminders for water breaks, 15 minute "walk breaks" in the afternoons, bringing in healthy snacks, etc.)

WCUgirl 05-25-2004 02:30 PM

This site is great!!! Good idea, RollerGirl.

I've made my journal public as well.

navane 05-25-2004 03:56 PM

Ok! I'll jump in too! Just last night I had written up a to-do list for today. One of the items was to sit down and work out my fitness goals on paper! This thread is great timing!

Living the student life for so long really did a number on my eating habits. It doesn't help that I eat sugar and drink soda like it's going out of fashion. :o

Here are my fitness goals:

** Let's see, first, I could probably stand to lose about 25 pounds. According to fitday.com, to meet my goal, I would need to lose about 1.77 lb per week. That sounds pretty reasonable to me.

** Increase flexibility. For someone who was an ice skater for 10 years, my flexibility is practically non-existant.

** Decrease body fat. I've always been muscular and athletic. Getting on the scale is sometimes deceiving as I weigh a lot more than I look. In other words, my muscle content weighs down the scale and makes it hard to track fat loss. So, I have one of those nifty scales that does body fat readings. Mine is currently 34%. Ack, that needs to go!

Here's how I hope to accomplish this:

1) Drink no more than two (12oz can) sodas a day. -- I'm already working on this. I greatly dislike the taste of diet sodas. However, I found that diet rootbeer and Dr. Pepper are ok. I alternate drinking the sugar ones with drinking the diet ones.

2) Drink two glasses of water a day.

3) Eat breakfast at least 3 days a week. You all must understand that this will be a challege for me! :)

4) Participate in aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes a day (walk, dance, run, etc).

5) Participate in some stretching, yoga or pilates activites at least three times a week.

Good luck everyone!

.....Kelly :)

Lady Pi Phi 05-25-2004 04:20 PM

Okay I too have made my journal public.

Here's the link:

Emily's Fit Day Journal

To reach my goal I have to lose 1.84 pounds a week. I think I can do it.

chideltjen 05-25-2004 04:25 PM

Jen's Journal

Enjoy. Although I kinda cheated. I was out line dancing beyond 12:00 am last night so techincally that activity can be counted today... right? ;)

Kelly,
I gave up sugar soda a loooong time ago, when I was about 13 years old (except for the occasional root beer or cream soda, which l still love :-). I drank only juice, milk and water until I discovered diet soda at about 16. I hated diet coke at the time, so I had to find something else to like. My favorites are Diet Dr. Pepper (or DDP), A&W Diet Cream Soda, and any diet friut soda like Fresca (there's another one and I can't think of the brand name, it's like Rite Cola or something. It comes in this delicious kiwi strawberry flavor). Other non caloric drinks that are good for flavor are crystal light, or Fruit Water which is made by the people who make SmartWater. It isn't carbonated, but it comes in light, refreshing flavors. You can get it a Whole Foods.
I hope that helps you find a diet soda you like. If you don't, it's no harm. There was a recent study done that saw a decrease in bone mass of women who drank diet soda on a regular baisis.

Yup that can count as today! I have to make my goal list but count me in

Not just diet soda, but any. The carbonic acid and the phosphorus depletes calcium deposits in your bones. It's better off to stay away from bubbly stuff (except champagne!!) if you're concerned w/ this.

This is totally true. Stay away from soda, sugar or sugar-free, caffeine or caffeine-free doesn't matter! Drink lots of water! Even some flavored waters can provide carbs for a snack instead of actual food!

UGAnchora 05-25-2004 10:58 PM

I'm so in! My best friend and I just got back on our summer workout plan today and are definatley going to buckle down on our diets...I'm headed off to that website right now!!

Of course, I need to find a good scale and weigh myself...I really have no clue how much I weigh.

my favs:

crystal light (comes in raspberry ice, etc... heavenly!)
diet snapple
on occassion i have the diet rite and diet hanson's sodas. they make really good ginger ale.

I have stayed away from cokes/pepsis for a while. I only order them if there is nothing else on the menu and if i want more than water.

norcalchick 05-26-2004 01:21 AM

i just signed up!
the only prob i have is where you put down what you ate and what all the nutritional values are.

in my journal, i i'll be putting down what i ate through the day and what exercises i've done. does shopping count??? hehe

i've been doing pull ups and i'm able to do one by myself and if my bf helps, i can do 3. he said that's impressive that i can do one, cause not many girls can do em :D i'm gonna start going to the gym, but have been doing bench presses here at home. i have a LOT to lose :( i'm not gonna get to my goal by my b-day though

You don't have to put the nutritional values if you can find it in the (really large) list of generic foods!

chideltjen 05-26-2004 11:46 AM

my problem with the generic food list is that i eat a lot of organic food and the fat/calorie counts are different from normal food. so i have to edit a lot of stuff. it's fine... just makes you pay attention to what you eat more.

ohh! Thanks for correcting me. I thought it was just diet soda. Well, Perhaps I should lay off the diet coke for a while.
