Friends with a Celebrity

Who here was a childhood friend of someone who is now famous? Someone that you use to hang out with and is now a celebrity. I was thinking about this yesterday....

I saw a commercial for New Found Glory's new album yesterday and I was floored by how successful they've become. It was only 8 years ago that I met Steve Klein (guitars) in my Geometry class. He was good friends with my best friend, Kristy, but I hadn't really gotten to know him until then. Because of alphabetical order seating, I ended up sitting behind him in class. We became friends. I even watched his little garage band practice on a few occasions. Who would've thought.....

He passed Geometry because I let him borrow my homework everyday and he cheated off me on the tests (he would pretend to yawn and stretch back and would check out all my answers....slick). I like to think he may never have graduated from high school without my help in Geometry thus causing NFG to never come into existence. ;) :D

During my Junior year (spring '98), they came out with their first album which consisted of 5 songs ("It's All About the Girls"). I don't think it can found in record stores. They passed around free copies to any student at the high school who wanted it. I still have my copy. :) The production of the CD was poor; nobody would have thought in a million years that NFG would become a popular. Admittedly, I didn't really like the album. I'm not sure if it was because the album wasn't good or my musical tastes. I'd go with the later of the two since that album made them one of the most popular bands in South Florida. I remember when Steve asked me if I liked their album and I lied and told him "yes".

After he graduated, they began touring to small bars around the country. During my freshman year in college, I realized that had really become big. My friend was attending school at the University of Pennsylvania. He called me at 2am one night to tell me that NFG had played at concert hall by him and that the place was packed with screaming girls. Within 2 years, they were everywhere. Their video for "My Friends Over You" was on constant rotation on MTV2. They were one of the headliners for the 2002 Warped Tour. My friend and I went to the tour when it stopped in Orlando. We tried to push our way to the front of the stage so we could say hello to Steve but the crowds of screaming girls blocked us.

Now, I see commercials for them everywhere and I always hear people talking about them. It's so weird to me that the little garage band Steve would always tell me about is now selling thousands of album copies.

Sorry that my post was so long. I guess I'm just in awe of how their persistence really paid off. I'm so glad that they've become so successful. They're a really great group of guys and I'm so happy that I got a chance to know them.

That's pretty cool. Unfortunately, I don't have any celebrity friends, yet at least.

DeltAlum 05-21-2004 10:44 AM

Have met a lot of famous people through work, but wouldn't really call any of them "friends."

Don't worry, ZeroCool, you got me -- and like Visa, I'm everywhere you want to be ;)

teehee :D

ZTAngel - that's pretty cool - one of my bestest guy friends from HS went on to play with the Vikings -- I used to watch him and think  he was my buddy. At the reunion he was SO full of himself, and I was like :( because he was such a sweetie in school. To top it all off, he stayed injured more than he played, and was eventually released -- so I don't know why he was so full of himself, but whatever!

cutiepatootie 05-21-2004 01:21 PM

i just went to HS with cuba gooding jr for a few yrs but wasnt friends with him. although we were in drama class and club together

ADqtPiMel 05-21-2004 01:22 PM

Wow, ZTAngel, that's pretty awesome. NFG has been one of my favorite bands for a while now. :)

DeltaSigStan 05-21-2004 01:23 PM

My old friend from high school Willie Green has been in a couple sprite and apple jacks commercials, plus he was on a show on Nickelodeon

CatStarESP4 05-21-2004 02:22 PM

The son of my mom's friend (I am also friends with his sister), played Danny Mellon (or is it Melon?) in Hang Time for a few seasons. He now is a substitute teacher, but he acts sporadically.

I also have another friend who is an actor, but I met him about two or three weeks after 9/11.

chideltjen 05-21-2004 02:25 PM

not me personally. but i have a funny story about one of my uncle's friends.

Apparently the friend is an actor and got cast as either a villian or random one time character on Power Rangers... when it first came out and was really popular.

bcdphie 05-21-2004 02:54 PM

I am related, albeit through marriage, to two well-known actors:

Dan Ackroyd and Ryan Reynolds

Lady Pi Phi 05-21-2004 02:57 PM

I'm related to Keifer Sutherland.

He's my cousin 9 times removed.

Nah...too distantly related to be gross

ETA: I don't really know any celebrities, but a few friends of mine from elementary school grew up in the same neighbourhood as Sarah Polley

PhiPsiRuss 05-21-2004 04:50 PM

My first girlfriend (in nursery school) was Mia Sara (the girlfriend in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.) She was at my bar mitzvah, but I haven't seen her in years. I do see her mom every now and then.

I went to high school with two of the members of Phish, but I wasn't on friendly terms with them.

lauralaylin 05-21-2004 05:18 PM

I graduated high school with Yes Duffy, who was on Road Rules. He was a nice guy, played the sax, very smart.

We don't have 29384729365 celebrities coming out of Hawaii, but I knew Miss America 2001 Angela Perez Baraquio Grey before she won the title. Her mom and dad still live up the street from me.

And though I don't really consider him a "celebrity", he's still a household name in many homes since he's about to break Ty Detmer's passing record next season. I've known Tim Chang since before he could WALK (let alone pass) on his own. He's the on again/off again (currently off again) "not-BF". Our mothers are good friends and have been since even before I was born.

Amycat's dad is his biggest fan. Haha.

And very hot.

He must have been very smart to have gone to Cal Berkeley!

ajuhdg 05-21-2004 05:35 PM

I went to High School with Shannon Oliver (she was number 3 on the first Bachelor)...not friends, but she was my partner for a Sociology project.

A guy I liked in third grade was in 'Powder'...not much else.

Don't know if this counts, but my uncle is a news anchor in Philly.

I also am friends (still talk to her, JUST found out what she does recently) with a bona fide porn star...NO, Russ, I won't post pictures.

My boyfriend's dad is an accountant. One of his clients is the father of a guy inDashboard Confessional...

I also took kiddie theatre lessons with Austin Petty when I was little.

I dunno...once you say you're related to someone it just seems to be kinda "ewww" to say they are hot.

My BF and his sister were extras in a movie with Christopher Walken when they were kids...but that doesn't count. =P

hottytoddy 05-21-2004 11:02 PM

I am very good friends with singer/songwriter Josh Kelley. He sings "Amazing" and "Everybody Wants You" in case y'all don't recognize his name. He went to Ole Miss and we were friends throughout college & we are still really good friends & keep in touch. He is a great friend!!!

Theo from Road Rules was Josh's "road manager" for a while and I became friends with him. I don't keep in touch with him though.

amycat412 05-21-2004 11:05 PM

yes

hottytoddy 05-21-2004 11:12 PM

Oh shit, also for all the TEXAS people...I am really good friends with Cory Morrow. Love Cory!

I saw him on the Aloha Bowl (I think that's what it was called?); he's a cutie patootie! :D

As for me, I don't really have a star-crossed life. My boyfriend my first semester freshman year played hockey for the Pittsburgh Penguins and my soon-to-be brother in law is a DJ at Star 100.7 in Pittsburgh. Also, Jay Mariotti, who is a sportswriter for the Rocky Mountain News and is on ESPN's "Around the Horn" is like my 2nd cousin but I've never met the guy.

Amycat I'm not :(

ha ha YOU know who they are Sandy. I just think it would be tacky of me to broadcast it, you know? I do not mean this as any reflection on the rest of you, this is my OWN value system about my friends privacy and my own privacy.

Glitter650 05-22-2004 02:19 AM

Humm.. well I've met some famous people... but not really friends with that many of them... although the Donnas did go to school at Palo Alto High... which is like 5 minutes from my high school... and there were a year ahead of me so I remember hearing about them in the local paper and seeing them at local performances and I even talked to them once back then.. but it was only that one evening we never really became friends or anything. A guy a went to high school with was on Dismissed... but those are really my closest ties to "fame".

Hahahahaha, you know I'd do the same thing if I had those friends in MY network! :D

*OTW goes back to wishing she had amycat's life*

Seriously, you can have all the time you want on the North Shore. Let me be Amy for at least a week!

Glitterkitty 05-22-2004 09:37 AM

worked with

....I have worked with Mark Tremoni From Creed, Sean Mackin from Yellow Card (lent him money once and he actually paid me back!), and am on a friendly basis with all the guys in Dexter Freebish and Brighter Shade. I dated Pat Stahl from The Shakers. Some of these guys are more celebrity than others, but they are all celebrity in their hometowns. I don't hang with most of them them anymore though. But I am very proud of them and their accomplishments. All very nice guys and deserve all the successes they have.

And-this is kind of wierd even though it has NOTHING to do with me...my step mother's mom plays bridge with Kevin Spacey's mom. So, I hear about what a good son he is once in a while from step-grandmommy.

Lady Pi Phi 05-22-2004 10:55 AM

With Keifer Sutherland, I don't knoe him at all. I've never met him. I can trace my family line back to him (because of his mother). And it's not a 6 degrees of seperation thing either.

Phasad1913 05-22-2004 01:27 PM

I'm related to Allen Iverson through marriage. I was supposed to go to a wedding of someone else in my family in Cali who was marrying a player for the Raiders, I think and he was there...I didn't go though

Senusret I 05-22-2004 02:12 PM

Amerie (R&B singer) and I are college friends and are still cool.

Jerry Porter (Raiders) and I are high school buds, but I haven't spoken to him since my Freshman or Sophomore year in college.

swissmiss04 05-22-2004 02:41 PM

I'm related to Bob Dole.

AXJules 05-22-2004 04:28 PM

I'd say about 5 or 6 that I could actually call up and wouldn't be embarassed that they knew I was telling people I was their "friend".

Amycat you and I are on the same page here, I think...

my best friend's dad- aka my second dad- used to play for the vikings and the browns- jeff steinberger. He is such an amazing person and practically raised me- i adore him so much- i just think its hysterical that he used to be famous lol. Her mom was also a ballerina in a dance company based out of florida- but that was in the 70's- she passed away this time last may.... :(

idk if these people are famous- but my neighbor- doug smith has had like 2 books on the new york times best seller list- for "the wisdom of teams" and "value and values"- he's a really nice guy and his wife went to school with hillary clinton (smith i think?) and she's a successful lawyer...

my dad's best friend used to be really close with ben, ann, and jerry stiller- he still talks to them a lot- and he is best friends with wes craven's daughter, jessica.

so its kind of a six degrees thing lol

fingerbang 05-24-2004 05:15 AM

my dad is really good friends with the guy who wrote most of the grease soundtrack ( jim jacobs ) and the guy who sang always something their to remind me ( peter byrne ) i dunno about my spelling though

AnchorAlum 05-24-2004 07:59 AM

Let's see. My daughter was friends with Nick Stahl (spelling?) in junior high and he was at our house a few times. He has been in movies and is currently in that HBO series Carnivale.

Jessica Simpson went to HS with my daughter. She is a very decent person (or was), and by the way, everything on her body is real, and she really can sing, and she is truly gorgeous.
She was a huge flirt though!

One of the finalists on a Bachelor (Rob from Dallas) was Paige Jones and she also went to the same HS in Dallas as my daughter. She lost out to Erin Brodie at the end.

We knew Jill Arrington's (sideline reporter for CBS sports college football) parents when she was just a baby. Back then she was known as Tiffany, though.

HBADPi 05-24-2004 01:53 PM

Not friends with but my old middle/high school has seen some people become big names after leaving. The Knight brothers from NKOTB went to my middle school, there was a 6th grade teacher who gave one of them a detention for chewing gum in class and he held onto the detention slip after all these years. A bunch of NHL players as well, including most recently Brooks Orpik from the Penguins.
