To Bang or Not to Bang?

That is the question.

Ladies, do you wear your hair with bangs or without? I'm thinking I need a change and I wanted to know what everyone's doing out there hair-wise.

(and, guys, before you snicker, keep in mind that bangs are a major commitment because it takes at least a year and a half to grow them out if you don't like them once they're cut. So there :p

Jaggergirl 05-18-2004 05:25 PM

I have slanted bangs that I push to the side. I like them, they make my short cut look more polished.

mullet81 05-18-2004 05:26 PM

obviously i know a lot about hair b/c my name is mullet - so i can tell you that full on bangs are a no no. But those fun side swept bangs are hot right now

No bangs here.

I was traumatized as a child when my mother took me to a hairdresser who sold her on a bowl cut for me. I think the hairdresser did this because short hair needs to be cut more often. I hated the look, and I was the ONLY girl with short hair in my kindergarten class, if not my entire school. (This was in the late '70s.)

When I was finally allowed to pick my own hairstyle, the first thing I did was grow out the bangs from the bowl cut. Haven't had bangs since. (well, not that sort of bangs... ;) )

mullet81 05-18-2004 05:44 PM

William Hung bangs... and thats all of the justification you could ever need to bang ;)

rainbowbrightCS 05-18-2004 08:26 PM

I cant have bangs, my hair is wavy so bangs are never even.

Peaches-n-Cream 05-18-2004 08:28 PM

Go for it!

honeychile 05-18-2004 08:32 PM

I wore bangs for years, but about a year ago, started to grow them out. They're almost chin-length now, but I'm still taking that extra time to work around them.

FWIW, I once read in a book on anti-aging that women who tend to get a wrinkled forehead would do well to develop a hair style that does include bangs!

PlymouthDZ 05-18-2004 08:34 PM

I have bangs, but not a whole lot.. I can do the whole side sweep thing, or regular bangs (that cover your forehead) or I can part them and have them on the sides (it sounds odd.. but it isn't, I Promise!) I love 'em :)

So, yes for bangs. I have a roung face, so I tend to look a bit odd without bangs.

starang21 05-18-2004 08:35 PM

oh wow....wrong thread...

Even I was hoping this wasn't a hair-related thread, but alas it is :(

I have short short hair and side-swept bangs. I have a big forehead and need to cover that puppy up! Nobody laugh at me. I cry easily...

James 05-18-2004 10:19 PM

What are bangs? And why would we want them? What do they do for us?

05-18-2004 10:22 PM

My mind was so in another place. I was ready to talk about f.....

Well excuse me.

*lifts church finger as he exits the thread*
not to be confused with the middle finger since its the index finger

Which is precisely why I wear bangs, always.

i feel for you. my forehead is somewhat large too. i went for the last three years without bangs but the forehead didnt look that bad. but i recently went back to bangs so now i am less self conscious of my head.

GeekyPenguin 05-18-2004 11:36 PM

No bangs. HATE THEM.

I grew mine out the day I quit cheerleading.

I went through the requisite poofy cheerleader bangs phase, but have transitioned quite nicely to sleek, side-swept bangs. See the post above about my big forehead...

KillarneyRose 05-19-2004 02:03 AM

Can someone post an example of the sideswept bangs? I can't picture them.

aurora_borealis 05-19-2004 02:22 AM

I was going to suggest to see your stylist that you trust, and ask them. You may or may not have the right shape of head or face for bangs. I went to my former stylist and asked, and she said no way in hell. The local one agreed, and I am not allowed any length shorter than chin.

I think this is what they all mean, the description said "bangs swept to the side".

ETA didn't you have eeough bangs in the 80's to last your whole life? ;) My sister is about the same age that you are, and the bangs she has now are nothing compared to her high school look in 1987.

FAB*SpiceySpice 05-19-2004 02:29 AM

OMG I had the absolute worst bangs in history up until freshman year of high school. I had the ones that were just cut straight across your forehead and I wore them all curly and poofy and ewww...yuck.

I grew them out though finally and then like Kath I started wearing them again as soon as I began cheering, but they weren't as heavy. I just needed some wispy but poofy ones to match my outrageous ponytail that was teased and curled within an inch of its life and then tied with a big bow. MAN, I miss those days of cheerleading. I think everyone on my squad went through at least two cans of hair spray a piece every week. It was definitely bad news.

I really like the wispy side swept bangs that are popular right now, but I have a medium/small forehead so bangs in any form just do not work for me. :( But if one can pull them off I think the side swept ones look really cute!!!

I will gladly donate a portion of my forehead to you. Just lemme know where I need to send it! :p

sororitygirl2 05-19-2004 03:18 AM

Bangs are WAY too much of a commitment for me... I hate growing them out.

But, they are very stylish and of-the-moment right now. Sort of the Jennifer Garner, long bang look. I say discuss it with a professional and see what she says your face is best suited for. Then, if you go for it, start out with them longer. You can always go shorter, but it's such a hassle if they start too short.

ladyj39 05-19-2004 03:25 AM

I've had the side swept bangs for about two months now. I was really nervous about cutting them , but I'm so glad I did! Ponytails don't seem so blah on me now. Plus, they draw attention to eyes! :)

mmcat 05-19-2004 07:43 AM

huge forehead.
bangs are a got to...
but not short ones. they look terrible.

When I think og sideswept bangs I think of Rachel's hair style in the finals episodes of Friends. It's actually really pretty.
I'd like that, but my hair is curly/wavy/poofy so bangs don't work well for me.
I haven't had bangs since I was 9.

ISUKappa 05-19-2004 10:19 AM

I kind of do, but I can't style my hair for shit (most of the time I'm too lazy/late to) so they don't look as good. Plus, I think I need a new stylist.

Ginger 05-19-2004 10:26 AM

I've got wavy hair too, so bangs don't really work on me.

Plus, I'm still traumatized by the 80s/90s and don't think I could even consider them for another 10 years :)

Rio_Kohitsuji 05-19-2004 11:18 AM

I had bangs all through grade school....
http://img70.photobucket.com/albums/...la1stgrade.jpg
...so now you see why I didn't keep them

LOL! Heck, those weren't bangs - they were living sculpture!

My bangs look like these. I hate my forehead, so I try to hide it.

I also went through the junior-high-cheerleader-poofy-bangs phase.

DZGirl 05-19-2004 04:02 PM

I vote no on full bangs, but the side swept bangs are cute. A few of my sisters recently did this and I like it.. only thing is it might be a pain when you get sick of them and want to grow them out, but not nearly as bad as with full bangs. I will never put myself through that again. I absolutely can't stand the "in between" stage, so I highly doubt that I will ever have bangs again.

bluefish81 05-19-2004 11:12 PM

I'm kinda anti-bangs. I once let my big sister cut them (not a good idea, I was 8, she was 13) and it didn't end well and resulted in my mom screaming at us and me having to go get them cut due to them angleling up and then leveling off. I sorta had them in college but that was due to a bad hair-straigtening job (where a larege chunk of my hair broke off) and me having to have a short haircut as a result. They were the push off to the side kind.

adpialumcsuc 05-20-2004 12:50 PM

I think that some people look great with bangs. I ha them my enite life until about years ago. I think that my change was mostly due to laziness. I hate having to fuss with my hair and bangs seem to require that. I have super long hair and even though my old bangs aren't as long as the rest of my hair, you would never know.

Honeykiss1974 05-20-2004 01:11 PM

NO BANGS

I grew mine out years ago (that hair is not touching my shoulder.

I like them, but I kept burning my forehead with the curling iron (OUCH!) whenever I tried to curl them. :(

I can still wear the "swipe across teh forehead like bangs" look, I just have to pin/clip the hair behind my era (and let the rest of my hair hang loose over it).

I've read that bangs accentuate the eyes though.
