"Hustle and Flow"- New John Singleton Movie
Singleton to Produce Inner-City Rap Movie
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Filming is scheduled to begin July 10 on an inner-city rap movie produced by John Singleton (news) and directed by filmmaker Craig Brewer. "Hustle & Flow," starring Terrence Howard ("Big Momma's House"), Anthony Anderson ("Barbershop") and hip-hop artist Ludacris, will be shot over a four-week period. Brewer has described the $2.8 million independent production as the story of a "pimp-hustler with a mid-life crisis who wants to rap." http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...john_singleton |

Uhhh....
Well they had me at Terrance Howard and lost me at Anthony Anderson & Ludacris.
This movie would have been muuuuuuuch cheaper if they would have given Dolemite the starring role. :o :D |
I wish that some Black(or other)filmmakers would realize that we have other stories to tell besides what is going on in the "hood" or who is sleeping with who and why.

There was a movie called G with Blair Underwood and Chenoa Maxwell that was supposed to have come out in 2002, but I've never seen it, and I live within driving distance of Los Angeles, a major market. Remember, most movies are aimed at teenagers or those barely out of their teens. |
I saw the preview for this last night while watching the Pistons game. It looks rather interesting.

It received ALOT of buzz at film festivals. I'm a Terrance groupie, so I'm can't wait to see it.
|
Funny, we were talking about favorite movies and I said I was a Jon Singleton Movie fan, so I'll probably check it out!
|
I don't care how good the movie looks. Terrance Howard is in it!!!!!!!! Can you tell that I'm a huge fan?
|
What I don't appreciate are those butchered accents. NOBODY Southern sounds like that. Who does Terrance think he's fooling? Sounding all crazy.
Phony accents bother me. |
Ok, I saw a free preview screening last night, the movie was actually pretty good. It's definitely the story of a pimp going through a mid-life crisis....

now Oscar Nominated Terrence Howard.
I wonder if his soon to be ex-wife will try to reconcile. |

Seriously.
When will the debate begin about THIS role being nominated? |

But congrats to him! *singing* It's hard out here for a pimp...:p Also the debate about him being nomiated for this role can be the same debate as in why Denzel won for Training Day. |
Isn't the Pimp Song nominated as well? I am almost :o at the notion that it will be performed at the ceremony. :o

I'm Lovin' It!!!

http://www.oscar.com/nominees/list.html I caught a bit of "The View" before I went to class and (our soror) Star mentioned it and wondered who'd be performing it at the ceremony (she suggested Snoop). It should be interesting! :D This has been a bittersweet day (with Soror King's passing). But, it has been brightened with all of the nominations for Crash and for Terrence. I'm a self-proclaimed wannabe Oscar "pundit"; I have been for about 10 years now. It delights me to see thought-provoking films and performances get recognized. Yes; there *will* be debate about him nomination (ditto to what SF jitterbug said about Denzel in Training Day), but *WHO CARES*?! The brutha is talented, whether he's playing a pimp or the producer of of TV show (Crash) or a POW in Hart's War (when many critics first saw his dramatic potential and were talking Oscar back then). People need to get over it already. Those are my $0.08 worth. Can't wait 'til March 5!!! :D:p |

Bravo!!!
Terrance Howard manged to show the complexity of human nature and heart felt desire in the most unlikely of characters.
Yes, he portrayed a pimp, but more than that he portrayed man's weaknesses and strengths. It truly was a dynamic performance. He deserves the Oscar nod, and I wish him the best! |
The Debate
Ok, seriously, I am really happy for Mr. Howard. I love his work! But I can't help but to feel like this is a flash back to Denzel's Oscar nod and win for a movie that portrays a negative black image. Just as Denzel, I feel that Terrance could and should have been nominated for another work (Crash) that would not put such a negative image into peoples minds about Black people. Does anybody see the correlation between the nod for "Training day" and this one for "Hustle and Flow" ? Or, even the somewhat degrading role Halle won for in "Monster's Ball". I just feel like the powers at be are nominating these works as a slap in the face. I really don't think they are being nominated because they are actually relating to the stories themselves, but they are choosing these movies because they feel the most comfortable with Blacks in these types of roles. I think they don't see the roles where Black people are playing positive roles as realistic.
|
Oscar for what?
^^"Somewhat degrading role for Halle Berry"
I think that was the worst depiction of a black woman I have ever seen. It was horrible. |

This song was nominated.....are you kidding me???!!! Wow........ |

H**l, Eminem has an Oscar, so anything's possible. :p |
It's hard out there for a pimp was nominated for an Oscar? :o
Wow...I agree that Terrence is a great actor. However, I am a little disturbed that this role has received so much praise. The movie was watchable but not breathtaking, outstanding, or even deep. I think it is a slap in the face for someone who has played complex characters and has talent far beyond that portrayed within "Djay." This character was a pimp who went to prison for beating up a star in the music business who didn't like his music. I hope Terrence wins, but I just don't understand it. |

The Oscar board thought hmmm....why not choose a man that played a crooked cop (Denzel), a woman that played some white man's confused whore (Halle), and (possibly) a guy who played a pimp(Terrance). Oh and by the way, they are all black...WTF? Only goes to show.... |
