Why is this a sign that the world is coming to an end?

AXEAM 05-17-2004 11:11 PM

Because the Olympics are divided into two categories men and women, not some medically altered freaks. Can you imagine if some guy who runs the 100 meter dash in 10.2 sec had a sex change then ran as a female, this could be the end of real women winning @ the Olympics besides it's JUST PLAIN WRONG!!!

msn4med1975 05-18-2004 01:46 AM

I won't say it's a sign of the apocalypse but it is wrong. It will be several years before I think it seriously impacts the sport but if there are a number of cases were the transexual decimates their competitors I'm sure this will be revisited.

Sistermadly 05-18-2004 01:59 AM

I wouldn't go so far as to call them 'freaks' -- and there are some women who can compete and even beat men at their own games. However, I think that in sports where brute force is required there should be limits, because men are typically stronger than men.

Bruh you're right! The world gets sicker and sicker by the day.. if you don't accept any and everything people want to do...something is now wrong with you.. ...go figure...

All we can do is lead them to the water...but we can't make them drink...

SisterMadley We're talking about the Olympics here, where you have the best of the best no offense but I don't think a woman should not have a fair chance to win b/c some surgically altered man is pitted against her. The Olympics are often a once in a lifetime chance for the athletes it's selfish, foolish and just dumb to allow this. Now many real women won't even make the Olympic team let alone get to compete in the Olympics.

LOVE_SPELL you're a 100% correct these days people want to do what ever they want to do,damn everyone else just plain selfish. Can you imagine all those hard traing REAL WOMEN having their dreams of winning a gold medal destroyed b/c JIM who is a man wants to win a gold medal as a women.....just plain sick!!!!!

Senusret I 05-18-2004 05:12 PM

First of all, who has ever heard of a transgendered athlete in the first place? It's not like they are protesting by the hundreds to be in the Olympics.

Second of all, the Olympic committee DID investigate this....did anyone read the article? There is some scientific data that says transgendered (male to female) lose hormones and muscle mass as part of the transformation. So, they aren't just men dressing as women competing against women.

Do I think it's fair? I don't know. I would actually like to see transgendered people participating in lower-level sports first, to see if there is really a difference.

Steeltrap 05-18-2004 05:28 PM

Renee Richards?

Would Dr. Renee Richards, the tennis player from the 1970s, be considered transgender or transsexual?

Senusret I 05-18-2004 05:48 PM

I don't know who that is, but I think the terms are supposed to be synonymous.

Is it possible to make your point without resorting to name-calling?

It depends on who you ask. Some people are transgender (meaning that they live their lives as members of the opposite sex), but they haven't had surgery. Transsexuals have had surgery.

Tomayto, tomahto. ;)

Gracias for the clarification.

msn4med1975 05-18-2004 10:19 PM

I actually thought the terms were reversed, if your transferring genders that would imply surgery. I've heard the term transexual used for people who had and had not had surgery.

But just to be sure I looked it up at dictionary.com

transgendered: Appearing as, wishing to be considered as, or having undergone surgery to become a member the opposite sex.

transsexual: One who wishes to be considered by society as a member of the opposite sex.

or

One who has undergone a sex change.

I read this thread wrong for some reason I thought we were talking about Hermaphrodites, and I thought calling them freaks was awful harsh because they were born that way . ..

Anyway what would the olympic committee do with an hermaprodite athlete?

Men? Um yeah. The same way females bind their breasts to prevent them from protruding.

James, interesting you would bring this up. I just saw a special the other day that talked about the number of hermaphrodites that are misgendered because they were given the wrong surgery as a baby. Usually because the parents wanted them to be a certain sex and they wouldn't wait until the child began to show his or her's natural tendencies.

But to answer your question, if they still had both organs, I doubt if they would qualify in an case. And for those who had an organ removed--how would they know?

BTW Axeam, I think the war in Iraq, the prevalence of drugs and violence, and the increase in hate speech and crime are a greater indicator of what the world is coming to than trans in the Olympics.

AXEAM 05-20-2004 04:04 PM

Ladygreek I have to disagree with you on that one......There's always been war, there's always been drugs, even hate & crime but never a rule that allows men who have sex changes to compete as women in the Olympic games.:D
