CrimsonTide4 05-15-2004 04:53 PM

it is the most horrific name. . .

A is for Apple and everything but sometimes folks go too damn far.

WCUgirl 05-15-2004 05:06 PM

I like Blythe Allison but they could have done w/o the Apple. How weird.

LeslieAGD 05-15-2004 05:58 PM

Apple? Oh lord

Orange
Banana
Kiwi

Peach
Guava
Pear

DZHBrown 05-15-2004 06:22 PM

Yeah, what the hell? Blythe Allison would have been a nice name. But Apple??

Peaches-n-Cream 05-15-2004 06:23 PM

I never met an Apple before. They should have named her Peaches! ;) Blythe is after her mother so that is nice.

GeoffZ 05-15-2004 06:29 PM

I'm wondering if the fruit name is a British thing. The author of that new book Bergdorf Blondes is named Plum and she's British too. I like the Blythe part.

Flower names seem to be popular in the UK too, according to the novel "Elegance" by Kathleen Tessaro (e.g. Poppy and Flora....especially Poppy). I too would have dropped the Apple part though.

PhiPsiRuss 05-15-2004 07:31 PM

If that kid is just a few pounds overweight, her classmates will call her "The Big Apple." Hello body image problems.

Damn. That's a pretty good-sized baby. Mr. ISU Kappa was 9 lb 13 oz when he was born and he's now 6'4, 300 (but I know that doesn't mean anything)

KillarneyRose 05-15-2004 11:53 PM

This is unsubstantiated, but I heard today that "Apple" is a nickname Gwyneth's late father, Bruce Paltrow, gave her when she was a little girl. I understand she and he were very close and she was devastated when he suddenly passed away, so maybe naming her daughter Apple makes her feel close to him.

Anyhoo, what's up with these American celebrities who don't want their children born here?

AGDee 05-16-2004 12:15 AM

Free health care in the UK AND they send a nanny home with you for 6 weeks (or they did when a friend of mine had a baby there).

dakareng 05-16-2004 12:41 AM

That and the paparazzi won't be making your life miserable. I've cared for babies born to celebrities (mostly professional athletes). We'd have to hide them in the back of the NICU (a locked unit) to keep reporters away.

I don't care if that was her nickname from her father... naming a child after a fruit is dooming her to being teased the moment she hits kindergarten.... I've seen plenty of wierd names. I feed sorry for all the first grade teachers of the world who have to remember how that parent chose to spell Mary or Alice or Lisa(trust me, there are many ways!). It's interesting that more girls get the wierd spellings-- think that's a sexist observation? Perhaps. Or is it just not cute to name your son something unusual?

Taualumna 05-16-2004 01:16 AM

Maybe she's going to be known as Blythe or Allison in school.

NO!

Additionally, Gwyneth decided to have her baby in the UK, because Americans are 'too patriotic'. Not in a hurry to see her movies anymore...she can kiss my red-white-n-blue arse!

dakareng: I'm from Plano too! Wish I were there now!

Hospitals stays are much longer in Europe in general. A week is the minimum for a 'normal' birth here in Germany...three weeks for a c-section. The hospitals are VERY different than the states though!

Chris Martin being British also may have had some role in her deciding to have the baby in London.

Apple Martin. Oh jeez...

Back to alt.gossip.celebrities where they are having a field day with this latest bit of Gywnnie "news" ;)

ajuhdg 05-16-2004 11:26 AM

These are her exact words:

"I worry about bringing up a child in America. At the moment there's a weird, over-patriotic atmosphere over there, like, 'We're No. 1 and the rest of the world doesn't matter.'"

You can see the link to her story (one of many) HERE

So what? I'm sure many people feel that way, but because they aren't celebrities, no one pays attention to them. What's so bad about wanting to have your children be exposed to different cultures and lifestyles? If I could take my children and raise them in a different country for a few years--especially if the father isn't American--I would.

She's from Manhattan. There is no place on Earth where you can be exposed to more cultures and lifestyles.

But you don't experience it first hand in Manhattan. Living in London, one can go to Continental Europe just for a weekend. Imagine going to Austria for two days to see historical buildings and sites first hand. You have museums in NYC, but that isn't really the same thing.

There is a lot to be said for travel. Despite the fact that NYC is one of the world's most diverse metro areas, not everyone takes advantage of that. In fact, the kids I've known from the tri-state area are often among the most insular folk I have ever come across.

I totally agree with what ISUKappa said. Exactly what is wrong with raising children with a more diverse worldview?

You mean we're not???? j/k :)

Seriously, though, if that's how she feels then she's better off staying over there. And I hope she loses her passport :p

Hehehe. You crack me up.

On a side note, they've already been released from the hospital. Saw some pictures today.

ajuhdg 05-17-2004 02:44 AM

Yes, there are things to be said for travel...I'm living in right now! I just didn't care for her comments, and I'll echo KR's statement: She can stay there with her Apple Martini forever for all I care! I don't like her husband's music, and he seems very controlling to me. I'm sure his strong statements and feelings about the US did have some say in the matter. Just my opinions...

aj

smiley21 05-17-2004 07:57 AM

i used to adore coldplay. but then they became popular in the US and started getting played ALL THE TIME. good ol america played them to do death and sucked the joy i got from listening to coldplay. now i think their music sucks.

Yeah I was just going to say that. She might go by one of her middle names.

I know I would have if my parents had decided to name me after a fruit.
Well at least she wasn't named after a vegetable. Her name reminds me of the twins in "What a Girl Wants". They were names Peach and Pear. They said they also had a sister named Parsnip...but she didn't get out much, lol!

Actually you are wrong.

Come to Toronto.

An apple a day keeps Gwynnie away (from the US that is).

It's probably a good thing she broke up with Brad, or she might have though it was cute to name the baby Peach....Peach Pitt.

Oh, no, I hope Brad & Jen don't get that idea...although if they do, maybe Peach will become friends with Appletini, and you'll have a regular old fruit salad going on.

AOII_LB93 05-17-2004 02:26 PM

Wait till they have more kids, then they can have a fruit salad... Apple...WTF kind of name is Apple? Don't parents think of their kids lives when they name them?

Peaches-n-Cream 05-17-2004 02:46 PM

I knew someone named Cinnamon.

I think Peach Pitt is funny!

When I found out what they named her, I thought about all the nicknames the kid will have when she gets older. My first thought was that her peers will call her "Apple Martini"!

Tippiechick 05-18-2004 02:48 AM

I read on babynames.com that the name Apple may have been a tribute to the Beatles... Something about their record label being Apple records or something... Just a guess from one of the posters who said that Chris Martin is way obsessed with the Fab Four...

They should immediately take Gwenyth's skinny butt out back and beat the far out of her for giving the kid such a name.

It's almost as bad as Shannon Sossaman's son: Audio Science

or Jason Lee's kid: Pilot Inspektor

DWAlphaGam 05-18-2004 09:56 AM

Apparently Jermaine Jackson's son's name is Jermajesty. That's waaaaay worse than Apple.

Well there are LOTS of other Beatle-related names they could have given her, like Lucy, Martha, Julia, Prudence, Eleanor or Piggie (just kidding about the last one) that wouldn't get the kid beaten up every time she goes to school.
