Something I Have Noticed...
It seems that all my SF's here are Supa-Duper SF's.
When I say that I mean that you all seem to be dreaming sooo BIG. You are interns for huge companies, in law offices, big gov't jobs, and other 'important' jobs. I mean I have confidence in myself and everything, but I want to know if there are any SF's out there that don't want to work for Fortune 500 Companies and the like. Where are my musicians, singers, artists, dancers, teachers, librarians, social workers? |
Hey POP!!!
Well I have NOOOO desire to work in Corporate America. I would like to go into athletic administration, (Professional or intercollegiate) but this is looooong off in the distance and I must pay my dues first. So I will be content with my teaching job or whatever else my degree in Kinesiology takes me. Having those other types of jobs (no offense to anyone who is pursuing them you have my highest respect) bores the hell out of me. If it aint related to Sports Medicine ro Athletics I can't dig it. Besides I cant wait to get back to my students...!!!!!! They keep me on my feet. BTW way POP I know I told you I needed a new hobby and I think I will bring my musician side of me back out. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif ------------------ Speak your mind even if your voice shakes... You should know I'm not feeling the corporate america thing....
Where I work now is teaching me that everyday. I'm happy with helping folks. |
wanting to work for a fortune 500 has nothing to do with being "supah dupah"...it takes just as much...if not more tenacity to make it in the arts...because your job is not based on brains...but physical appearance and talent...and often people assume if you have the latter you are lacking the first...to answer your question though...no...i don't want to work for a fortune 500... http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/celestialblues/imani.html

Poplife, you are not alone.
I'm here, working hard every semester to get about ten different degrees in ten different disciplines, all in the school of education. Give me hard-headed kids who need direction, over hard-headed adults who won't take direction, any day of the week. |
Dang Celestial, I went to your site and was like this sister looks like Erica Badu. I bet your crib is filled with incense, wine and candles (such a freaky scene-per Rick James)Cool.

Meeks, may I email you? I want to give you a comment about your major and "dream job" if I may. I work in the HR/Job Center dept. for my university.

My philosophy in life is get in where you fit in. If dancing and singing are your bag, go for it. Someone will always look at you, your life, and your career with "awe" as well.
The environment doesn't matter (IMHO); what does matter are your skills, your talents, and the time and effort in which you use them. We all dream "BIG" in our own ways everyday and some of us actually do "BIG" in all ways, great and small. While I've earned a doctorate, worked in media, higher ed, and the fed govt, I don't considered my career track(s) big or small-- as compared to others. I consider my track to be "me, pNc". Plain and simple. |

Well I am a Junior Elementary Education major. I love working with kids because they are real. Plus with those big companies you can get laid off without motice. At least with teaching you can get tenure. I love the flexible schedule of teaching. SUMMERS OFF. Perfect to me. I love being able to do my own thing. I can creative my own lessons and if I want to change something it is on me to do something. As long as the kids are doing well on their standardized tests my boss will not bother me none.

I wouldn't say I am a supa-dupa SF. B/c we are all great in our own special ways. As for where are the dancers, etc...
I have been dancing since the age of four, and I am quite good truth be told. But I know that dance will not do it for me alone. I am a Political Science and Mass Communications with a concentration is Print major. I plan to go to law school with and emphasis on Corporate Law. With my mass comm degree I plan to write my way through Law School. I am the sport's editor for my school's paper and I love analysing political dealings. I hope to secure an internship with the legal staff of Microsoft, I have already completed one with my town's newspaper. With all my money I know I will make one day, I hope to open the "Starz Dance Company", this company will have it's own academy, with an emphasis on classical ballet, and comtemporary dance techniques. This studio will be for children who are talented and who would normally not have the opportunity to be artistically challenged on an elite level. I know this was long but, I had a lot to say. ------------------ Discretion is Key Learn it, Live it [This message has been edited by reddnhott2020 (edited August 02, 2001).] |

Well I am aspiring musician/recording artist. I dont want to work for a Fortune 500...nor do I necessarily want to own one..but my ultimate dream is to own a company that controls all the aspects of music for my company..let me explain I want to own: 1.the record label that makes the music 2.the distribution company the mass produces the music 3. The radio station that plays the music 4. the record store that sells the music Even if I did this on a local level I would be satisfied. |

My grad work is in university administration, so therefore, that's where my career interest lies. Lord willing, I will become a vp student affairs at a mid-size private university.

I am a former teacher who now works for one of the biggest computer companies in the world. Yea, I make more money here than I did teaching, but( there is always a but) I am just a small (very small) fish in a big pond. I am no where near Supa-Dupa!

I am an Environmental Science major and I have always had internships for these big entities:
USDA, General Electric and now a National Laboratory (as the saying is here: this is where the govt. does it's science). The first summer i taught, next I worked in Env Health & Safety and now I work as an env chemist in a laboratory. These people make a lot of money but right now I don't like any of the jobs I have had except for the first. When working for the USDA I taught Environmental Education in inner city parks in Atlanta. I loved it. I am trying to figure out now what I wanna do with my degree. I am not even concerned about the money. I think that I was born to teach and help children but with my major I don't quite know how to make the switch. Although I have the opportunity to work for corporate America I think I want to trade it all in and be a science teacher. I would rather do something I love for the rest of my life and make not as much money than do something I don't enjoy and be wealthy and unhappy. ------------------ 29 Jewels of N.V. # 1 Delta Delta Chapter |

No corporate America for me. I'll be having none of that. Nothing against anyone who takes that route, I just can't be proud of making some 60-somethings year old rich white dudes company prosper. I am studying psychology and plan on going to medical school to become a psychiatrist. I want to own a private practice. I've wanted to act since I was about 3 years old, which I currently do. Depending on what I want to do more after undergrad, I may go to Cali to pursue acting as a career. Right now it's a side thing. I've studied theatre since 1992. That's my biggest love. Sad but true, people get tired of your face after a while so I'll be able to practice psychiatry long after people decide they've had enough of me.

Well Pop, you KNOW my plan! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif by the way, all of my stuff is packed up (I'm finally moving), so can you send your number to my hotmail account again?

I graduated two years ago, and have done the corporate thing since then. I HATE it. This sister is going to teach!!!!!! It sounds like such a cliche, but I don't feel that I'm contributing anything to the world by sitting in an office at a computer all day. I think it depends on the individual, but I don't find it personally satisfying.

Much love to all the social workers out there my mom is a social worker at the Family Independence Agency.!!!!! Now that is a job that is stressfull (and believe me my sisters and i caught the brunt of it when we were little) but after all this time she is still helping people!
oh yeah...any musicians out there please hit me up...I am not sure if I want to start trumpet lessons or piano lessons. I am a fluent clarinet player already (since age 9). if anyone playes either of these two instruments email me i am interested! ------------------ Speak your mind even if your voice shakes... Sure you can! Sorry it took me so long to respond. I was at the beach! ;-) |
Well, this is certainly an interesting topic. I'm a Music major myself. I've been a singer ALL my life (I used to be called Mariah (in case anybody cares) until I completely stopped singing ANYthing secular and instead sing only for the Lord http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif).
Of course I write poetry and literature and other things, too. But this Music degree will be my 3rd degree, and it will be my 2nd Bachelor's degree as well. It's ironic, because I started in Music ten years ago. I had a scholarship and everything and HATED it with a passion. What was expected of me, I simply did not want to pursue. After getting a Bachelor's degree in Psychology back in 1995 (science), and a Master's degree in Public Policy & Administration in 2000 (corporate world), I was left wondering what I could have done with Music if I had stayed in it. Music is the only field I was actually CALLED to, and I went back to undergrad school to pursue it JUST to please God and to see if He would use me just as much as He has in the past. Sure enough, I've been blessed, and I'm being even MORE blessed each day I stay in Music. I was just recently approached to do a guest solo on a CD for a group that has just recently signed with a national recording label. The gentlemen who came to me are people I work with everyday. One told me it was the most difficult song on the CD. When I asked why did they ask ME to do it, he said, "Because you're the ONLY one around here who can handle it." God is opening doors left and right for me right now. Secondly, after thinking that the other two degrees would go to waste, He showed me that my Psychology degree qualifies me to work in Music Therapy, which is a new science gaining lots of interest these days; and my Public Policy degree qualifies me to become an advocate for keeping Music in public schools. I think this is the reason they call it "the LIBERAL arts" because so many disciplines, no matter how distrinct they are, can be linked interchangeably. So, I'm blessed, ya'll. (Sorry for the long post.) ------------------ No weapon formed against me shall prosper, for I am a child of the Most High God, Who sits upon the Throne of Grace, and rules all Heaven and Earth.
